Young children in a class hold up their work in Yombo, in the Central African Republic. In this county affected by war, a third of the children never go to school, and 42 percent of teachers are just parents without qualifications, but paid by the community to teach the village's children. About 38 percent of the country's schools have been damaged (attacked, looted, or occupied by fighters) during the inter-communal fighting that started in 2013.

6 years ago today, my close friend Camille Lepage was killed in Central African Republic.
I recently found in my archives this picture of us and a group of Antibalaka fighters taken on their request, a day before they attacked Bangui in order to take the city back from the Seleka militia. When we met with them in the forest about an hour walk of Bangui, we could have never thought they would attack the city as they looked so weak with their traditional riffles and machetes against Seleka fighters who had machines guns, mortars, grenades etc... but they did attack Bangui on early morning of Dec 5th, 2013. They did not take the city back. Most of them died. About a thousand bodies, mostly Antibalaka fighters and civilians, were found in the streets of Bangui over the next few days.
Camille looks much more comfortable with these guys than me. They were all impressed by this energetic, brave, and friendly white girl. She could open any doors. She was just 25, and already so talented. She died 5 months later in an ambush, while following some Antibalaka militiamen.
