    The revolution begins 10.01.19 #FUTURELIGHT

“During our first few days, we wanted to explore as much as possible, climb the established routes, and get a feel for the area. The hikes are long and steep. We were all breathing hard and moving slowly as we got used to the elevation. Climbing at first felt as if we were all wearing weight vests and had stuffy noses; one move felt like five, and we quickly realized how difficult it would be.”⁣

“Small businesses in mountain communities such as Tahoe (my home) are the backbone to our way of life here. They form the foundations that support our passion for exploration and preservation of wild places.” - Emily Harrington @emilyaharrington

I'm @steffen_jp and I LOVE THE OUTDOORS. Hiking, snowboarding, swimming, surfing, and rock climbing — I love it all. Plunging into vast powerful ocean waters rejuvenates me. Speeding down slopes of fresh powder electrifies me. I learn how to listen to and trust my body, as I shift my weight onto the smallest edge where I stand up aided by the rand of my climbing shoe. ⁣
⁣ ⁣
⁣The outdoor space provides me with a pleasant disruption from the exhilarating yet ceaseless energy I experience from living in New York City. And it’s also a space for community where I congregate with a diverse group of people who support me inside and outside of these spaces. ⁣
⁣ ⁣
⁣If I could spend all my time engaged in these activities I would because being outdoors is a special kind of freedom to me. but the way others treat me outside can make me acutely aware of the history of the black body’s treatment in America. This knowledge forces me to always move cautiously among those I meet. I often try to make myself “less intimidating.” I am careful where I travel, knowing that some areas may not be as welcoming to me as others. ⁣
⁣ ⁣
⁣Because of who I am, a black man, people in and out of this space often signal to me that the outdoors aren’t for me. I know despite what I'm able to physically accomplish in these spaces, I cannot always claim them as my own. Any discomfort that I experience in these areas is affirmed when I don’t see anyone else who looks like me in the outdoor ads and magazines. So I’d like to solicit some support. Not everyone has to carry this weight. Those who don't have to carry racial stigma into their outdoor experience are privileged. Those who feel like they own the space around them are privileged. Anyone who has access to the outdoors is privileged. ⁣
⁣ ⁣
⁣You can use this privilege. Make the outdoors more accessible for those who do not always feel like they are welcome in that space. The outdoors should be for everyone and we can all do a little bit to make it more accessible.⁣
