The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance • alan watts ~

It’s also a time to resist, and fight, because passivity won’t get us the changes that life, in all its forms, most needs in order to thrive. Hope you are taking care of yourselves and each other tonight my friends 💚

“Hope through the storm”, Renan’s photo, now available as a fine art print! 20% off all sizes and print mediums with 100% of profits going to support @ndncollective, a native nonprofit we know personally who helping with indigenous rights and COVID relief on the ground level. It’s crazy that on reservations like the Navajo (pictured here) COVID rates are higher per capita than any other state. Please help to support the relief efforts and enjoy some art as a bonus! Link in my profile : ) [Code is NDN at check out for the discount!]

It’s estimated that one in every five adults in America — just under 50 million people — are currently living with a mental illness of some kind. I know I am 🖐 but thankfully I have been able to access and afford support from a therapist to keep my anxiety from controlling my life. What’s been on my mind a lot the last few weeks is how difficult it is right now for SO many people as we are all processing what’s happening in the world, from covid-19 to this important movement to #defundthepolice and commit to #antiracism work. We are processing our collective fears, exhaustion, confusion, anger, traumas, and uncertainties. We are also building courage and connection. Thankfully right now, mental health services are the most affordable and accessible they have ever been thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Prior to 2008, health insurance companies were NOT required to cover mental health services, but the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act changed that. In 2014, under the ACA, insurance companies became required to cover mental health care for not just large group employers but small groups and individuals, drastically increasing access and affordability especially to those in need. Of course, its not a perfect system. Yes, insurance companies have been able to find loopholes and sidestep their obligations. But what’s truly frightening to me is the GOP’s continued efforts to gut the ACA and with it, the protections in place for those who depend on it especially lower income communities whose rates of mental health issues are significantly higher (due to increased stressors many others don’t have to deal with). I live in Colorado so I’m going to be on @sencorygardner phone line this week urging him to publicly oppose the Republican lawsuit against the ACA, and in doing so support Coloradans who need that care and protection. Please, if you or someone you know depends on the Affordable Care Act and believe in it, get vocal because it’s at risk. CALL YOUR REPS. They count each phone call and each email. It makes a difference. ❤ #senatorcorygardner #corygardner

My sisters at @girltrek have been on my mind the last few days and I wanted to bring some light and attention to what they have been doing for the last TEN years. @vanessatreks @morgantreks @jeweltreks and everyone involved have created a movement of getting black women - mothers, daughters, healers, leaders, creators, care takers, fighters - into the streets. To walk for their own healing and for justice in all its forms for the black community. 690,778. Six hundred and ninety thousand seven hundred and seventy eight black women walk in the streets of their neighborhoods across this country, often daily, always peacefully and in solidarity with one another, for this movement. This form of protesting and healing doesn’t make the news but it’s something to know is also happening and deeply reflects what the majority of those at these protests are doing now. Occupying the streets is the only thing that’s ever changed the world. That, and voting. Thank you to everyone out there in the streets, putting your bodies on the line to fight for that justice, and to everyone out there who has chosen to fully engage in a long term journey of learning, supporting, donating, examining, standing up, and walking the walk. I love you all. #blacklivesmatter [photos taken during @girltrek 100 mile walk across Maryland and Delaware retracing Harriet Tubman’s escape to freedom]

Wanna know what really gives me vertigo? Makes the world feel blurry and confusing, where I’m not sure how strong my grip is on things? Or where I stand?Where I might slip and fall because I was wrong, or not right enough? Being politically active. Which is why for most of my life I havn’t been, which is very revealing of my privilege and life of general safety and security. But I’m not talking about voting once every few years, or liking and sharing posts on the gram. I’m talking about really spending time learning deeply about the ins and outs of things like the Affordable Care Act, how it effects me and others, and what my elected officials are doing in regards to public health for my state and ALL of its people. The weaknesses of these systems is certainly being exposed now more than ever...😔 And I want to better understand the nuts and bolts of pieces of legislation that will effect my state’s public lands and wild critters and access, like the CORE act of Colorado (which has been sitting on the back burner for years and is actually a pretty solid piece of bipartisan legislation that most agree is important for the protection and conservation of key areas, but my (CO) Senator, Gardner, ahem... is dragging his feet.) I’ve found that getting motivated to really dig in on civic engagement has been a bit confusing at first but also fun. Mainly because the handful of strongly-worded voice mail messages I’ve left on their phone lines has been one avenue for venting the stress of quarantining : ) #senatorcorygardner #corygardner

Moments before the boat departed Kamchatka, as the final bags were being loaded, I went over to sit by the shipyard dogs and center myself in their calming presence. We had just met Vladimir moments before, the unexpected hitchhiker who would completely change the purpose and experience of our #FromKurilsWithLove journey and forever change my life. Little did I know that a year later we would be here now, together launching KIRCI (Kuril Islands Research Conservation Initiative), the 501c3 set up to support the critical data collection and protection efforts in this region. @renan_ozturk and I are busy creating some behind the scenes films to further show how the science is happening in this region (and the various mayhem that couldn’t make the short film cut!) and cant wait to share. For now, two more days to watch on @mountainfilm!! $10 of you don’t have a full pass. The full pass is worth it tho, SO many incredible stories from so many incredible storytellers. Feeling ever grateful to be a part of this community. [and thx to all who helped this project come together! @jtkerby @rishisugla @povel @chrisburkard @_ryanhill_ @tedhesser @alejandroarango13 @ollyru999 @donreverendo @tomorrow_unlocked @floristboring and @lgnnelson 🌊]

When I sit down to focus on creative and personally meaningful projects it usually means overcoming 117 forms of distraction first. Which I think is pretty normal. Just making sure we’re all on the same page here. #stickwithit @sonyalpha @thenorthface @manfrottoimaginemore @loweprobags @natgeo @renan_ozturk

Im so glad you were born, on this day, a handful of revolutions around the sun ago. I love your big soft ears, your furry chest, your giant paws, your sweet nuzzles, your fiercely independent spirit, your love for running around wildly in the mountains. Even though you make a lot of messes, each one is a blessing in my life because we get to make them together and they all compose a part of the collaborative art piece that is our love. Happy Birthday RENAN. 🥰 @baloointhewild @renan_ozturk #fortyandfabulous
