A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
I emphasize over and over to my kids the importance of having and being good friends. Your friends are the ones with whom you will share ideas, be yourself, and encourage. I pray all my kids choose friends and will be friends who point to Christ. I also want my kids to be friendly and kind. (They aren't always, but this is my hope as they mature.) I watched my own mother in regard to friendship and she was/is such a good friend to others. Her friend group was broad and never contained just one "kind" of person. The connections my mom built with people were the ones I desire to this day. She didn't spend every moment with her friends or even go on vacations with them, but often as a child, from our kitchen table I could hear talking, laughing, and the clanking of coffee cups. I remember my mom was always listening and because of that she seemed to never lack for friends. Her ability to listen allowed for process. She didn't cut people off and tell them what they should do in the middle of their crisis, but she did encouraged them and pointed them to Christ.
As I sat watching these sweet teen girls the other morning I couldn't help but notice how natural it was for them.
We are made by our creator as people and friends to connect, be real and feel, to walk through hard things with one another, to celebrate our joys, to love each other well, and to ultimately be found showing one another a unique piece of Christ that is found only in community and truly knowing one another.
(Thanks for reminding me girls of the simple things.)
