Swipe to see more images. Last year at the Hong Kong rugby 7s I captured two pleasing motion blur shots of Japanese player Siosifa Lisala. It took me a year to get him to see the photos at this years 7s as I had not been able to get them to him any other way up to that point. He's changed his hair style this year but he's still a great personality on and off the pitch. He spends so much time with the crowd signing autographs and taking selfies. He's a good ambassador for the game.
One of these photos was him about to score in the qualifier final vs Germany. You can see the sheer delight in his face knowing he's going to score a try!
As for the motion blur shots the technique is fun but a low chance of success so not something you try until you've banked your safer shots! These ones also involved me running up and down the side of the pitch trying to get ahead of the players who might break away and then plant my feet while also focusing, panning and tracking the player hoping to keep part of them in sharper focus while blurring the rest of the scene. Anyone want to guess the shutter speed I used?
