Got back on my food plan last night. I say “plan” vs “diet” because diet always seems so restrictive. This plan does cause me to be mindful of what I choose to eat, but also ensures I’m getting ENOUGH fuel to get the most out of my sessions!

I’ve been chasing a smile like this all year. And, in all honesty it has felt and still does feel out of reach. There have been few times this year where I have felt accepting of where I’m at, letting myself just be in the present.

This year has dealt injury, sleep troubles, anxiety and mild depression. Everyone has their struggles and obstacles in their way, including me. The hard part is accepting that, accepting that life isn’t easy, it’s imperfect.

@fleshmanflyer posted a quote from Anne Lammont recently. Her words in combination with Anne’s, truly hit me like a brick ... “Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won't have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren't even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they're doing it.”

For me, chasing perfectionism is the very  root of my anxiety. I’m striving to say “Fuck it, Let’s just see what I can do on the day!” Live in the moment. Accept that I can only control my actions RIGHT NOW. This will take practice and awareness, but I hope to one day find my way to the surface of the “bullshit” that is perfectionism.

TIGHT HIPS!!! When the hip flexors are too tight it can lead to problems such as back pain, knee problems and ITB pain. 😬
Did you know that the tighter the hip flexors become, the harder it is to engage your glutes!!! The problems are exaggerated further!!!😬😬 This is such a common problem for triathletes , cyclists,., indeed many athletes. 
Pilates is great as it brings muscle balance to the hips - all the muscles cintribute to the outcome... the result is maximum power with a reduced likliehood of pain. Pilates for sports teaches you how to engage your core so you can get the most from  your swim, bike and run👏👏

“The smallest victories can seem like the biggest wins in the world of triathlon. Triathlon is a challenge with 1 million challenges within. To claim victory over one challenge can propel you to win 999,999 more times.” If we start setting smaller goals, I mean really smaller goals within your training, we can gain so much more confidence while steadily increasing your technique, strength, and efficiency.

I’ll give 3 examples:

1. Practice BiLateral breathing during swim training. When: when you have that Buoy between your legs, take advantage of that extra assistance to practice bi lateral breathing.
2. During Brick Sessions ...really attempt to transition off that bike and get running...don’t take your time...time yourself and work on getting faster every time. 
3. Don’t do all of your long rides in a group setting...especially when training for a full. Do a handful of them alone and don’t stop. This is where we learn what our bodies will do for a long extended period of elevated heart rate time...because that is how it is on race day. 
These are just 3 examples of a million where you can build confidence to get you to your next level. Imagine if you conquered just one of these 3 and how much it will benefit any athlete in triathlon.

When we started triathlon in 2011 the thought of this happening was a pipe dream. Over the last couple of years it’s gone from a pipe dream to something I’d visualize before every race. Now I don’t have to imagine what it feels like.

From 45th Overall in 2011 to 1st Overall in 2019. I guess I’m what you might call an overnight success. 😉

I’ve decided to add a short, 8 move yoga routine for runners 2-3 times a week after a couple running form drills. Easy to do while our oldest is watching her extra show after little brother goes to bed. 
Got to pose number 2 before my foot cramped... so yea, you can say I’m a yogi now... 🤦‍♀️🧘‍♀️ .

It's heating up everywhere this summer! Are you prepared to perform well in the heat? Here are some basics of training in the heat so you're adapted and ready to tackle any scorcher race: 
1️⃣ If you are sweating your body is already trying to handle the extra stress from even slightly warm temps. AWARENESS is key for being proactive.
2️⃣ Keep the quality of your key training sessions for the week by avoiding the hottest part of the day. Choose non key sessions for heat acclimation. Expect to run slower and see higher than normal heart rate. Your body will adapt over the course of a couple of weeks to perform at faster paces and lower heart rate if you adapt properly and with patience.

I was all smiles coming off the bike on Saturday at #muncie703 Little did I know, things were about to get so bad on the run that I’d be questioning whether or not I wanted to compete in this sport anymore. The mind is capable of taking you to some very, very dark places when you present it with the right combination of stressors. The last three miles of the run were—both literally and figuratively—hell on earth, but once I told myself that stopping wasn’t an option, the only alternative was to keep moving forward. After I crossed that finish line and the pain subsided, I was left with a renewed sense of accomplishment and a valuable set of lessons learned.

A big thanks to all of the volunteers at this race—they went above and beyond to make sure all of the athletes were safe in the heat and they kept us smiling. Thanks to @corbinphilhower for taking a quick break from cheering to snap this photo, temporarily taking over my dad’s role of official race photographer.

"Iwas born a runner. My parents said that I started running even before I learned how to walk. They enrolled me in athletics when I was 3, and I started competing at a very young age. I won many competitions, did my first first marathon at age 43 in 3:14:15, participated twice in the Boston Marathon, did several triathlons and a half Ironman. To me, every day was beautiful because I could run, bike and swim before and after work. Then, tragedy striked. I was hit by a biker while I was biking home from work one evening. I injured my pelvis, and had to have emergency surgery to repair my hip and rotator cuff on my right side, while my left leg felt very weak. I could not run, bike or swim anymore, and felt very sad. Then, I found out about Pilates for Sport, and immediately signed up. Every day, as I was doing the exercises of Pilates for Sport, I felt that I was getting stronger, and my core and legs were getting stronger. I started running, swimming and biking again, and as I keep my shoulders down, my belly in and squeeze my butt, as Pilates for Sport is teaching me, I am getting faster and am able to feel myself again. Pilates for Sport has helped me physically by allowing me to gain my strength back, and also mentally, by helping me regain the confidence in myself that I had lost when I flew off my bike that terrible evening. I would have never made it back to the things that I love without Pilates for Sport! " 👏👏👏

As we live in this world we encounter negative or damaging influences that affect our Body, Mind, and Spirit.

Not all of us will have the strength to bypass these influences, it will affect our Body, Mind, or Spirit with physical or emotional: bruises, stress, or pressure (invisible chains). Our hurt will create barriers that will limit our potential.

We must learn strengthen ourselves or seek help* to remove these invisible chains. (*Help being professionals in the areas of medicine, licensed mental health therapists, or Bible-Base Pastors.) One of the supernatural experiences is how a caterpillar Transforms into a butterfly.

One day it is crawling and after being in a cocoon it’s able to Fly.

We need to always have a Body, Mind, and Spirit similar of a Butterfly, flying free of these invisible chains.

In a book I’m reading the author writes “Don’t keep crawling when you have the ability to Fly.”

So this happened... this was my third 29th  birthday cake. A good friend of mine has an amazingly talented baker friend. They created this masterpiece for me. One layer is chocolate with buttercream and the others are spice with buttercream. It was magical and delicious. First run post vaca. A painfully slow and uncomfortable 45 mins, probably thanks to the lack of mindful eating 😬🤣🤣🤣
But my mind needed the break. And sometimes your mind needs the break more than your body! I feel refreshed and excited about sessions again! So I’ll start as slow and sluggish as my body needs to get back into it! I LOVE that this sport can be about the long game... the long term goals, not just the event that’s right in front of you!
