Surfing? Scuba? SUP? Tidal Pools? Yes, please!
On Taiwan’s southern coast is #KentingNationalPark
, and its best beaches. Here, you’ll find snorkeling, scuba, standup paddle boards, surfing & lots of tidal pools to explore. We even found some incredible grassy hills and dunes to scramble on!
Depending on what you like to do, you’ll want to pick the right side to stay on. The west coast has calmer water, perfect for scuba & snorkeling. Coral reefs are gorgeous & have more (and more colorful) fish than anywhere else we’ve swam. They’re literally putting on a show & coming right up to our camera! Outfitters dot the coast renting everything you’ll need & offering guided trips. We grabbed masks & fins from @beach8869355
(aka “Hai Bian Snorkeling”) and walked right across the street into the water.
Inland just a bit is where the busses drop everyone off on Kenting Street, which is very touristy and overpriced. If you’re craving a burrito or burger, tho, find it here. If you want #localfood
head for the coast and find a small noodle shop. Just check the hours, many open late & close early!
If you’re into surfing, you’ll want to stay on the eastern coast, where the waves are. Typically best in the fall, the locals say they’re always bigger when there’s a #typhoon
in the ocean. There’s not a massive surfing culture in Taiwan, but there were good sized groups in the best spots all day long. We were stoked to see an almost equal number of women and men out on the boards, snorkeling and everything else! Both sides have crystal clear water, with beaches ranging from sand to pebbles to rocks. Bring good sandals, and keep an eye out for perfectly polished sea glass!
Rooms & restaurants are sparse on the east coast. We rented scooters directly off the bus drop, which is the best way to get around and see the sites. Traffic is much calmer down here & drivers rarely go faster than the scooters. We felt completely safe riding them with our kids on the back.
