Hong Kong is a stunning place, merging Asian and Western roots. I could sense Beijing and London, yet the city’s atmosphere reminded me most of all of Berlin. Coming from Tokyo with the Japanese politeness and somewhat coldness I entered a city where I (in the privilege of a traveler) could let go of the tension of fitting in. Here in Hong Kong, I could simply be myself.
To a high degree, this was thanks to friends. Some I had already known through Instagram, others I made during my one week stay. I felt utterly welcomed and got to experience places I couldn't have discovered on my own.
One of it was the fabulous Cheng Kee Store [鄭記士多] in the off the beaten track area Sham Tseng. @_classy_kassy_
brought me to this tea salon, introducing me to local tea specialities.
The owner Mr. Cheng follows a long Chinese tea tradition from Song dynasty. Yet, he has also cultivated his own flavors in tea, coffee, and sweets over the years, becoming a true master in his art. Our visit was nothing short of a gourmet journey with many surprises such as learning how a ceramic bowl can enhance the taste of cheap red wine.
We had green milk tea and oolong tea and were indulged with lobster ice cream with strawberries and raspberries as well as osmanthus sorbet with fruits and hot sauce. My personal favourite has been the milk tea, which Mr. Cheng foamed from slightly warmed up green tea powder. While cooling down, the latte flavor changed from a milky taste towards a stronger tea taste. And it was especially good with a pinch of cumin and a cumquat fruit. Just amazing!! Oh, and the bubbles in the tea foam represent stars while the bowl itself is the moon. 🌙✨
