The highly awaited Kuka Arm Darkride with a Batman story!
Spoiler Alert, but Batman Knight Flight is no Potter Swatter. Although it tries hard.
The queue establishes an amenable explanation for our being inside Wayne Enterprises, a job fair. Soon it throws the kitchen sink at guests: A show elevator with simulated movement and hidden screen, a surprise mission by Batman himself, an Avatar-Flight-of-Passage-preshow-like guest-scan, a secret dark tunnel into the bat cave, a custom prototype helicopter for us as chosen test pilots, also a very impressive loading system as our ride vehicle is being lifted out of our personal cave and then exciting supine movements during the ride. All of that is very fun and impressive indeed. No personal items are allowed on the ride so I did not take pictures during the ride.
Now the thing with elaborate dark rides is they need to be convincing within their own context. What designers call the suspension of disbelieve. And for me it unfortunately did not work. The queue design strives for realism but the animation of Batman then is of contradicting cartoon quality, looking clumsy instead of going full out and using an actor in the Nolan's movies' costume, for example. It's distracting. The ride itself starts great with an impressive lift-off from the bat cave. However the next motions never feel convincingly like being in a flying helicopter. Too many sets look too fake to be believable, always mixing toy-like sets with CGI animation and static figures with more realistic surroundings. Also the story is confusing and overloaded. Too many very unlikely things are happening already during the queue, but even more so during the ride. As a result, I never got immersed in this show, and for me this ride unfortunately fails. But then again, it fails on a spectacular and world-class level that is comparable to Universal's Kong ride or Disney's Mystic Manor. Should be better and way more immersive considering the effort but still is very impressive as it is. IMHO of course. What do you think?
