I read The Alienist by Caleb Carr for @the
.book.junkie.trials and after much consideration I have decided to give it 4⭐️/5⭐️’s .
Caleb Carr describes his novel as a “whydunit” instead of a “whodunit” and I honestly think that is the best description you could give this book. This is a book that you cannot read when you are sleepy because each paragraph is full of information; whether it’s information about New York in the 1800s, psychology, or a characters past, it is all very important to the novel and you need to be alert. Although I felt like I read this book fairly quickly because I just needed to know who the killer was and what was going on, I did feel like the book dragged at some parts that made it difficult for me to want to pick the book up. There were quite a few paragraphs that sounded like they came from a psychology textbook. All in all though, I do definitely recommend this book. I loved all of the main characters, the mystery will keep you flipping through the pages, and I really enjoyed the setting. If you enjoyed the Robert Downey Jr. version of Sherlock Holmes then you will almost certainly liked this book.
