THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IS ON TRACK TO BECOME SAVANNAH IN OUR LIFETIMES (BUT THERE IS HOPE):
Listen up: At the current rate, the Amazon rainforest will be reduced by 40% in our lifetimes—that’s by 2030—11 short years from now. If you saw my previous post, you'll know what 40% reduction means.
We will be consumed by short term solutions at the moment. After all, the world is trying to put out literal and metaphorical fires. But I also encourage folks to look at long-term, systemic solutions, which take coordination, vision, and partnership.
There ARE initiatives that are happening right now that can result in this systemic change:
is helping indigenous peoples and indigenous-led NGOs across 8 countries organize together with governments to create a mosaic of connected indigenous and environmental lands north of the Amazon River—over 500 million acres. (As you’ll see from the map here, there is a wealth of intact land that is being conserved and this should be celebrated and supported.
How you can give to @gaiaamazonas
: Visit @natureculture_org
, click “Give Now”, and specify “Path of the Anaconds” or “Gaia Amazonas” as a donation.
2.) Donate to @gaiaamazonas
sister organization in Brazil: ISA @socioambiental
3.) Donate to @coiabamazonia
, which coordinates indigenous organizations in Brazil for 30 years.
4.) Read, share and donate to @mongabay
, which is the premiere independent news source on the state of our world’s forests.
5.) This is going to be a tough one: but I may even recommend taking shareholder action and call upon governments to boycott trade with Brazil and individuals to do the same, particularly on products that emanate from the destruction of its forests and the people living in them (this goes for wood, meat, and respective agricultural products).
Climate Action week is just around the corner, but this cannot wait.
As a result, I’ll be rolling out a series of actionable items and learning sessions on the back of my #HowToMakeAPlantLoveYou
Book Tour so you know how to get involved in the most effective way today! 🌿
