As I’m packing up to head to @greenville_technical_college
this afternoon to teach a #Hempcrete
workshop, I thought I’d repost this image from last year.
As we continue to delve into what true sustainable building means, we follow the progressive designers and builders in the industry who have made the concept of ‘embodied energy’ easy to understand.
If we want to create carbon sinks with our buildings, instead of the opposite, which means that we can slowly begin to reverse the catastrophic effects of climate change.... we cannot simply ‘net zero’ our way out of this.
In other words, only focusing on operational energy use (Aka: energy performance after the building is built) and continue with the mindset that highly manufactured materials such as foams and concrete are ‘green’ because we create a tight enclosure, is missing the mark.
The studies by @endeavour_centre @chris
.magwood show us very clearly that the ONLY way we begin to shift this, is when we are also focused on Embodied Energy (the materials and manufacturing process to get that building in place). The numbers are there to prove it.
Embodied Carbon calculations in new buildings is a thing, it’s happening, and will become the future.
I’m excited to see educational institutions starting to become engaged in this conversation.
