Which is harder, silver or gold? I've heard a lot of customers say that gold is softer than silver, and I think it's time to set it straight!
Technically, pure gold is approximately as soft as pure silver. BUT, they're both too soft to be practical for jewelry purposes. So they're alloyed with other metals to make them stronger. 14k yellow gold, which I use in my work, is harder than sterling silver. (Both metals, by the way, are alloyed with copper to make them more durable.) And 14k white gold, which is mixed with nickel, is even harder than 14k yellow gold! So while sterling is great for many things, 14k yellow or white gold are always going to be longer-lasting choices for wedding bands, engagement rings, and other heirloom-quality jewelry.
