| HAPPY VOLUNTEER WEEK | In 2018 a lovely retail team member from @savechildrenaus
was in the audience at a talk I presented at a Melbourne retail trade event. We met after the presentation + exchanged emails as we were both so moved by one another's work. Soon after I sent a proposal outlining how I'd like to volunteer my time to become the first National retail eco stylist for @savechildrenaus
. Last year at exactly this time we were able to make this happen. It's been such a privilege + honour to be of service to @savechildrenaus
- I'm so grateful to the incredible retail team for entrusting me with this role + seeing how it can be a force for good.
It's always been a mission of mine to be able to give back to children in need who don't have the access, opportunity or resources in life to get a head start like other children are afforded globally. @savechildrenaus
is a mission that has always been close to my heart, as a child myself who's had the lived experience of their safety + basic rights challenged. Although my personal story is in no way comparable to what a lot of children live through in the global south, I hope that I can be a voice for them through this role.
Through the medium of preloved clothes, not only are we able to help children in vulnerable situations, but the Save the Children op shops exist to help dress + clothe local community. Spending lots of time in the retail stores here in Sydney I've met + helped many people who don't have access to shopping any other way. I've met incredible donators, one lovely lady in these slides who donates incredible quality, vintage pieces who when I chatted with her, said that she donates so people who can't afford these quality pieces are able to access them through the opshops, which then goes on to help children living through war, famine + in refugee camps.
I've met single mothers, those who are out of work, new migrants + refugees, young people from low income families, retirees with very little superannuation, parents whose children are outgrowing clothes exponentially and can't afford to keep on buying new. Without all these incredible retail volunteers though, none of this CONT..👇🏾
