🎸Buying secondhand first 👗
This is my beautiful ukulele which I found on Facebook marketplace.
If you’re looking to buy something new (to you) I always go through these three steps:
1️⃣ can I find it second hand? (FB marketplace, gumtree, etc)
2️⃣ if I can’t, is there a company that makes the thing I’m looking for sustainably? (And affordably)
3️⃣ if not, can I wait for a few weeks or months until the item is listed on a secondhand site?
Typically, one of those questions will be a ‘yes’ so I don’t have to resort to buying something new from a non-sustainable company.
There’s so much stuff that’s already been created and that’s filling up our landfills we don’t need to keep creating new things in an unsustainable way.
This won’t always happen (like with some sports gear or specialty items) but you should at least exhaust other options first before turning to new.
There are also times when I will choose to support a small sustainable business, but usually that’s when I can’t find what I’m looking for secondhand.
As a rule: shop ethically. Look for secondhand options first.
Often you’ll find the best, most unique pieces this way.💚
