Some of the stuff I’ve watched recently over the past few weeks (in no particular order):
𝐆𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧: As a fan of Gareth Evans (The Raid, The Raid 2, Apostle), I was anticipating his new crime drama series (which he co-created with cinematographer, Matt Flannery) for a long time, and it didn’t disappoint! It’s going to be hard to top Gangs of London as one of the best action/drama titles of 2020, tv or movie!
𝗪𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝟑 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐞: When Perth appeared as one of the “divergence” locations around the world in this graphic from the Westworld S3 finale, I wondered what event/s would have happened in that city to cause a divergence. A couple of days after I watched the finale, there was a report in the news about the arrival of two “Robodogs” in Perth 👀
𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐌𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭!: I’ve only been familiar with director Johnnie To’s work in crime/action movies (Election, Election 2, Breaking News), so I was surprised to come across this Stephen Chow comedy on Netflix that To directed in 1992! Some of the jokes haven’t aged well, but it was great to see the comedy legend Chow on screen with the late Anita Mui, playing husband and wife.
𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟑𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟑𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫: I came across the second and third movies of the loosely connected trilogy of “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” on Netflix. “Return” is a comedic retelling of the first movie, but with Gordon Liu in a different role, and “Disciples” is more of a direct sequel to the first movie. Between the two sequels, I think “Return” is the better movie overall, and I was ready to declare “Disciples” as “meh”, but the fight sequences during the last ten/fifteen minutes totally saved it!
