To be continue

step one of five

The FIVE demands of the protest

1. Full withdrawal of the extradition bill
2. A commission of inquiry into alleged police brutality
3. Retracting the classification of protesters as “rioters”
4. Amnesty for arrested protesters
5. Dual universal suffrage, meaning for both the Legislative Council and
the Chief Executive
FIVE DEMANDS,
NOT ONE LESS.

Hong Kong’s eleventh straight weekend of antigovernment protests culminated in a large rally at the city’s Victoria Park on Aug. 18. Tens of thousands chanted “Free Hong Kong! Democracy Now!” and “Fight for freedom! Stand for Hong Kong!” as a heavy rain fell. Many at the #protest carried banners decrying alleged police brutality and what they claim is collusion between law enforcement and criminal gangs known as triads. There were no major street battles or arrests, to the considerable relief of many in the restive enclave. By the middle of Sunday afternoon, large numbers of protesters defied a police order and began streaming from #VictoriaPark towards the central business district. The sheer number of marchers overwhelmed major roads and brought parts of downtown #HongKong to a virtual standstill. Read more at the link in bio. Photograph by @adamfergusonstudio for TIME

Hundreds of thousands of protesters in Hong Kong have braved torrential rain to come out for an 11th consecutive weekend of mass demonstrations. Police only gave permission for people to gather in Victoria Park, but protesters ended up blocking several of the city’s main thoroughfares. Hong Kong’s summer of unrest began in June over a now-shelved extradition bill, but demonstrations soon expanded to include calls for greater democracy and government accountability, and condemnation of alleged police brutality. Protest organizers estimate that 1.7 million people turned out for today's demonstration; police have told CNN they do not yet have their own estimate for crowd size and CNN cannot independently confirm the organizers’ figures.

As the mass demonstrations in Hong Kong calling for democracy and complete withdrawal of the extradition bill entered their 10th week, police intensified its crackdown on protesters. Incidents of excessive violence include: -firing teargas into an enclosed subway station;
-firing a bean bag round into a woman’s face;
-shooting pepper balls at close range;
-and kneeling on the face of a protester.
The right to peaceful assembly and protest is a fundamental right protected under international law, and one of the cornerstones of a society built on respect for human rights and rule of law. Hong Kong police need to abide by international standards.

For our new Asia cover story, photographer Adam Ferguson, a longtime TIME contributor, documented the unrest in #HongKong from its frontlines, capturing smoke-filled scenes of turmoil and moments of powerlessness as young #protesters find themselves outmatched by riot police. The crisis there is the most serious to rattle the former British colony since its return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. “The real issue is what comes next for Hong Kong, not the daily mayhem between police and protesters,” says Ferguson. “Tear gas and arrests have become a smoke screen for a larger conversation that needs to happen. Something has to give.” See more pictures at the link in bio. Photographs by @adamfergusonstudio for TIME

It has been a long, volatile summer in #HongKong, where anti-government #protests are well into their third month with no clear end in sight. Stakes are ratcheted higher each week as police and protesters face off amid thick clouds of tear gas and flying debris. The movement against a bill that would have allowed the extradition of fugitives to the mainland awakened deeper anxieties about the city’s future under Beijing’s authoritarian rule, developing into a broader fight to defend the freedoms that distinguish Hong Kong from the rest of #China. In this photograph, an antigovernment protester is arrested near the Tsim Sha Tsui police station in Kowloon on Aug. 11. See more pictures at the link in bio. Hong Kongers have long lived a freer, more cosmopolitan lifestyle than most Chinese, and prejudice against mainlanders is pervasive. Free speech and an independent press are enshrined in the Basic Law that has governed the city since the handover. They’re proud of their distinct cuisine and language, speaking Cantonese rather than the Mandarin more common in greater #China. But critics fear China’s encroachment may bring an end to all that. In recent days, the specific issue at hand was a bill that would allow the extradition of fugitives to stand trial in mainland China. Beijing might use the law to nab opponents and submit them to its notoriously opaque justice system, they say. In other words, the contest for #HongKong reflects the stakes for the larger world that China seeks to lead. The rise of #Beijing has been the major global story of the new century. But the very breadth of that ascent and the bland labels of the areas where it has edged toward dominance—trade, infrastructure, finance, tech—have served to mask the nature of the system China brings with it. That system is control. Read this week's Asia cover story at the link in bio. Photograph by Kin Cheung—@apnews

Re: Extradition Bill
With a combined membership of several hundred companies, the Nordic Chambers represent a wide variety of businesses from the Nordic region, ranging from start-ups to multinationals. Despite differences in size and scope of operations, the Nordic companies in Hong Kong share a fundamental appreciation for the stability and transparency provided by the Special Administrative Region’s system of rule of law under One Country, Two Systems. Confidence in the quality and integrity of the legal system is central to Hong Kong’s competitiveness and its reputation as an international business centre.

Regarding the proposed fugitive offender ordinance or “extradition bill”, as it represents a major change to Hong Kong’s external legal and judicial arrangements, its adoption is likely to have important implications for international businesses operating here. It is therefore with concern that we have observed how the extradition bill currently pending in the Legislative Council has been fast-tracked without the thorough consultation and full legislative scrutiny that is customary for a piece of legislation of this nature. The Nordic Chambers believe that the long-term interests of the business community would be best served by a full consultation on the subject matter of the bill, and that Hong Kong’s reputation as a stable and transparent centre for commerce and trade risks being damaged, should the bill become law without having gone through the normal legislative process.

If the bill does proceed now to the Legislative Council debate stage, the Nordic Chambers believe it is important that there is sufficient time and scope for full and genuine consideration of comments made by legal, business and other bodies, and for appropriate amendments to the proposals including in areas such as further procedural safeguards, to ensure the adopted bill is consistent with Hong Kong’s robust legal system and rule of law standards. In order to provide the business community with the transparency it requires, any such safeguards should be given the power of law.

As a global citizen, I oppose the extradition bill amendment of Hong Kong.
Because the amendment is making all Hong Kong people fall victim to 37 extraditable crimes being exposed to the risk of prosecution by the Chinese authority, which based on the vaild prima facie evidence given by the Chinese authorities.

The “fugitive offender” will arrest and extradite to China for sentence, as well as freeze and seize “offender's” property in Hong Kong.
There have many case shown Hong Kong people were hardly have fair trial when they owing to the miscarriage of justice in China.

Although Hong Kong Government claimed that “fugitive offenders” involving political crimes would not be extradited. However they could still charged with other crimes by Chinese authorities.
Such as Lam Wing Kee, a bookseller who was charged with “illegal opetations” and “illegal publishing” in China.
