Wait for it...
This glorious matriarch tree is probably 800+ years old! It stands strong in BC old growth forest among pockets of nurseries, young trees stretching towards the sun in hopes of becoming just as strong.
Reasons old growth forests are important:
💧 Regulating water flow
🌧 Influencing weather patterns
✨ Remove carbon from the air
🌲 Store carbon
There are multiple fossil fuel projects in Canada that threaten old growth forest, indigenous people and the climate. There’s the CGL pipeline proposed to run through Wet’suwet’en land in northern BC, the TMX pipeline in southern BC, and the Teck Frontier mine in Alberta.
Until recently, Canada has done a pretty good job of keeping a squeaky clean rep in the eyes of the rest of the world. Canada’s economy runs on fossil fuels, so much so that Trudeau is getting antsy about Wet’suwet’en solitary blockades on the rail tracks that stop the transport of coal. There are people and organizations on the ground fighting against all these projects and acting in solidarity with indigenous folk. I think in order for Canada to actually change though, and leave these fossil fuels in the ground in favour of renewables, we need more international pressure and solidarity. We need the world to say “not cool Canada”.
There’s a huge campaign against the Teck mine right now. I have some resources and actions via the link in my bio. It’ll direct you to things as simple as sending a tweet to the Canadian prime minister or leaving a message on his latest Facebook post. Even if you’ve done some already, please do them again so that your message is read LOUD AND CLEAR!
