Compassion is effortless and spontaneous. That's the beauty of it: it is the natural fragrance of your being.  You don't actually have to cultivate it, you don't actually have to practice it. When you recognize awareness & let it flower in you, it carries with it the fragrance of compassion. You feel connected to everything that is and that connection immediately starts a dance in you : when the flowers open, something opens in you, when the stars shine, something shines in you. How can you not be compassionate if you recognize everything as an extension/representation of you ? 
This has to be deeply understood, because if you miss the point you can start practicing compassion without awareness but then it is not real compassion. A practiced compassion can become very dangerous & manipulative because it is conditional and it is under the illusion of operating for the greater good. It is in the name of such a compassion that many people have hurt themselves & others, that "civilization" was forced upon people against their will, etc. 
Compassion is not a practice, it is not a discipline, it is not a doing. You cannot develop it because in a way it is beyond you. You are moved by it, while remaining free. The more you are rooted in awareness, the more compassion develops in & around you.

Today, play with this thought — “I yield.” As you play with a song or monologue, if you notice you’re trying to hold yourself up at all, think about yielding. Release any unnecessary muscular effort. Especially through your heels.

And ending up in a pile on the floor is totally an option.

I’m pretty sure it’s the word I use most in my teaching.

Yielding to gravity, giving up the extra mental/muscular effort I’m spending hurling myself through a day, is the first thing that makes me start feeling better when I’m feeling like a disaster — in my body, in my thinking, or both. But it’s always both duh.

When I was in high school and having serious back spasms after wearing a back brace for a couple of years (#scoliosis anyone?) I instinctively found my way to what I later learned was Constructive Rest position. Because my instincts knew I needed to yield. *before somebody corrects me here, I KNOW this photo does not demonstrate Constructive Rest —  sometimes “yield” looks more like let your belly hit the mat and give it up to the ground okay?

So, that’s why YIELD. Well, that or EVERYTHING HURTS AND NOTHING IS FINE. 🤷‍♀️ #constructiverest #yield #nondoing #doless

While vital safety measures impacting how we travel, work and socialise are temporary, the “quarantine of consumption” (a phrase conceived by Dutch trend forecaster Li Edelkoort) engendered by the pandemic is likely to last much longer. The big realisation? We need less, much less than we ever thought we did, and we need to think harder about what we do consume — including what we wear.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Just sit. There’s no need to do anything, go anywhere, or look for some kind of special feeling. Meditation isn’t about achieving some magical state, transcending reality or getting superpowers. It’s just learning to be with ourselves fully and to face whatever it is that comes up in that space. Get to know that stranger in the mirror. Sit with yourself. Welcome yourself for all your glory and all your shortcomings. Just be.

The gift of non-doing. 
Productivity is a highly valued quality in our society.  In our fast-paced and driven society, we are often given messages to constantly strive, accomplish, and achieve. This pressure of productivity can turn into aimless busyness. Being busy is not the same thing as being productive. When we feel the drive to incessantly do, do, do, we can lose quality in what we are doing. Keeping our minds and bodies constantly busy can keep us out of touch with the present moment. The way our culture values productivity and ambition, can create a illusion that our worth is tied to our accomplishments.  This illusion is harmful to our psyche and can cause us to seek validation from “without” as opposed to “within.” We need balance to be in a state of wellness. We need space in our life for stillness and serenity.  Our mindfulness practice can be a little refuge in our day for this. Have you ever had ingenious lightbulb ideas, breakthrough thoughts, or solutions to a problem come to you in the shower? This is likely because your mind was given a break, which allowed for new ideas to come through. I often find that my most inspired ideas come to me during or just after my meditation practice! I know if I hadn’t intentionally carved out time in my day for “non-doing,” these thoughts may not have had space to come through! Our thought patterns are hardwired to think in certain ways based on our life experiences. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this and can be quite adaptive in many ways, sometimes our thinking can become rigid and stuck. A meditation practice can help us get our minds clear enough to think in new ways!

I’m naturally a type A person.  When I started my meditation practice years ago, it was initially hard for me to rationalize spending 20-30 minutes a day in meditation. But I was also really stressed out and overwhelmed working in a field that was a 60 hour a week kind of job so I was open to anything that would help reduce my stress level. I found that when I gave myself intentional time of “non-doing,” I was able to consciously “do” things in my life more effectively and efficiently. More in comments!

The monastery has survived from many invasions, embedded in the history of Central Asia, that rocked the region. You will not be able to spot the monastery until you have reached the foot of the mountain and ventured into the interiors. By taking time each day to practice meditation or simply sit in silence we begin to make friends with ourselves. 
This may be very difficult at first because our minds have become accustomed to constantly thinking, planning and doing
 We have become so used to the busyness of our lives we may feel we don't have the time for sitting in meditation. 
Some may see this practice as an actual waste of time.
We live in a society where success is often measured by our accomplishments and how many things we can tick off of our to-do lists for the day.

I can tell you from my own experience thst meditation is an absolute gift that you can give yourself each and every day. 
I suggest beginning by setting a timer for 5 minutes. Just sit and focus on your breath.
You will begin to feel the more subtle vibrations and movements going on within your body. If you start thinking, don't judge yourself. Simply come back to your breath. You become  the witness to the goings on of your mind and the sensations in your body
It is called a practice because that is what is required. 
I have had both moments of absolute wonder and joy while practicing as well as moments of intense emotion and frustration. 
As we continue with the practice of meditation we begin to feel more deeply the preciousness of all human life. 
We find the peace that lies in the spaces when our thinking mind has stopped we are simply breathing.  We begin to notice and become more aware of the interconnectedness of life.
We may feel our compassion for ourselves and others increase.
If anything,  we begin to discover that with practice , we become more awake and aware of ourselves and the power of silence. -

It is our egoic need to be seen, loved, validated, appreciated, etc. 
One is not a sovereign when one is dependent on external validation.

Is there something wrong with not being a sovereign? Is ego bad? 
There is nothing wrong inherently. 
It's when we claim our independence and sovereignty and yet blame, complain and demand our needs to be met by the interdependent existence that it becomes a painful journey, not just for self but for others as well. 
Might as well get honest with ourselves for our human needs and learn to say ' Please, thank you and sorry ' 
Love you all.

How often do you let yourself do nothing. Or rather, how often do you let yourself not “do”. How often do you let yourself be?
I don’t mean the kind of sitting and doing “nothing” that involves scrolling Instagram, or watching TV. 🔮
Just sitting with no agenda. 
No particular thing you’re focused on. 
No particular problem to solve in your mind. 
Doesn’t matter if your eyes are closed or you’re sitting or standing or lying down. 
Gaze off into the distance. Or at a wall. 
Let everything settle like the snowflakes in a snow globe after you stop shaking it.
We also need to take moments where we stop shaking things up. 
Where everything can settle. 
I haven’t given myself enough time to just “be” lately. 
To be away from a screen or a to-do list or another human. 🔮
Without scheduling it, without adding it to your to-do list just see if you can start to slip in these moments of non-doing here and there. 
Maybe just after breakfast and before starting work you step outside or onto your roof (for you city folk!) with no agenda but to just be. 
Maybe before and after meals, or just when you wake up. 🔮
Drop your phone and swap your sense of urgency for a sense of curiosity.

• The seeds take time to bloom •

Patience is one of the key lessons that I am s l o w l y beginning to learn. 
I love the quote „nature doesn’t hurry, yet everything is accomplished.“ In my own experience, I tend to radically move between action & stillness in this dance of life. At times, however, not all of my actions are fruitful. Why? Because there is a lack of inner clarity, grounding & trust associated with them.

Sometimes, also, I have been tricked by my mind, which admired the perfection of everything, so full of bliss - that everything is already here, & there is nothing really, to do. 
Both these experiences are the extreme end of the spectrum. However, most of the time we will fluctuate; dance between the two edges. 
It is so essential to balance ourselves, in every aspect of our Being. To develop our own inner knowing for what it is that will truly align us & serve our highest purpose in any given moment. 
Sometimes it may be action, courage, the leaps of faith - daring the new, taking the excitingly scary steps - to create new worlds, to radically move, create, put new things into place. 
Sometimes it may simply be, to continue our daily practice of being, breathing, tubing in & doing what the present moment asks of us to do. 
There is no right or wrong here. There is no judgement - action is not necessarily „better“ than non-action - and vice versa. 
What means much more is, essentially: how is our state of BEING as we perform the action? How is our state of BEING as we rest in stillness? 
Action, when non-action, stillness and introspection would be required, is equally as harmful as non-action, when action would be required. 
There is no one outside of us who can ever tell us what is right for us, in any given moment. Only we can feel it. We can come to connect to our highest inner knowing; as we learn from our perceived failures, mess-ups and tired worn out days, as well as the regrets when we missed a chance. 
All these experiences might seem poisonous, but they are actually our greatest teachers. These pains become our medicine, once we fully align ourselves - once we are truly ready to grow and [continued in comments]

we have been gifted the opportunity to stop. just be. to sit in the stillness that may seem uncomfortable at first, but is creating spaciousness for the truest and most authentic gifts to be born. the spaciousness allows the light to be shown on the shadowed spaces that have been kept in the background for the sake of productivity. .

we’re conditioned to continuously be “doing”, providing some form of validation of our presence if we are not. .

I feel we have received universal permission to just be - to sit into the divine create space of stillness. of connection to my breath. of not needing to be constantly doing to feel like I’m making a difference. you, my dear, are cultivating a shift by just being you. by radiating your truth and inner presence - you are shifting the lives around you. you don’t have to be anyone. you don’t have to be known. you just simply need to be you. .

the thought process of thinking that we must be someone or be doing “something” to make a difference. we’ve been conditioned to “get ahead” and move on up. never satisfied with where we are. when do we look at our lives in complete satisfaction of where we are at? when do we sit in the space of not needing to be doing something next? an achievement, accomplishment? a goal? why is it that this act is viewed as selfish? we are here to serve, but what makes doing a part of “serving”? .

the masculine pushes us towards productivity and action, while the feminine nourishes in the creative space that is the stillness. the small. the simplicity. the womb. both are essential for creation. we’re basking in that divine feminine space of surrender. .

Sunday Vibing 🤍✨🖤 I am tired of projects and have so many to do. My plate is always full! You would think, that given the current environment, you could get all the things on your lists done. However, I find my list gets longer. Apparently, I am a doer. It has always been this way. Except in September. Something about August and September slows me right down. And the beach. Our need to take action in regards to something leads to premature action, or forced action, or unnecessary action, or just plain wrong action.

Our need to take action, coming from our mind convincing us that "we have to do something about xyz" is just a way of interfering with life's natural action through us.

Life's action is right action. And the way we allow life's action to take itself through us, is by dropping our need to take any action... No matter how Urgent an issue seems to be, or how Bad things could get, or how Big the problem is... Life knows all that. So if we drop OUR agenda, we allow life's intelligence to take care of things 1) in the right way, and 2) at the right time, through our natural inspiration and intuition.

Experiment with this, when it comes smaller issues, and you'll notice how things get done, with no effort thereof.

Then you'll gain courage to try it on more "risky" things.

And as you'll eventually see, there's more risk in taking premature/forced action, than in allowing right action to take itself.

Life is that simple.

I have a mental list of things I want to do this time of year: city strolls, hikes, BBQs, day trips. Most of them aren’t possible right now. But I do have this outdoor space, a precious commodity I never took for granted but really cherish now.

I’m trying to carve our more time just to sit in my chair in the sun, being content NOT doing anything. This can be difficult for those of us who love to be in constant motion, always crossing things off our to-do lists. But every time I sit in this chair for more than 5 minutes, with nothing on my agenda except daydreaming or reading a book, it feels like an escape from all the thoughts and worries cluttering my brain.

IT’S OK TO REST.

IT’S OK TO REST.

This has been my mantra the last few weeks. Realising, again and again, how difficult it is for me to do nothing, to be unproductive - TO JUST REST.

It would be so much “easier”... or maybe familiar is a better word, for me to take this period and write another book, teach a bunch of live yoga-classes, update my website or follow any of the another new project ideas that is popping up in mind.

BUT... I am done with the over-achiever. I want to learn how to just rest without allowing the “you-are-lazy voice” in the back of my head to take over. To be ok with sleeping in or to have days where I am not creating anything specific. Days of just being.

At the same time, during this long resting period in the archipelago (without teaching a class or doing something else for more than two months), I feel strongly how much I love to share and create from my heart. And while resting this much, I have also noticed that the pure creativity and longing to share it has started to grow inside again. Right now, I feel so excited to hold space soon.

But I will continue to keep the mantra above, as my biggest priority, a little bit longer... curious (and a bit scared) to see what is coming up inside.

Galls, boiling for tan, a hair-on and a grain-on deerskin are tanning nicely. I read that historically galls were sometimes used here in England in place of bark, so I am experimenting. Good so far. A coolish umber brown is developing.

Imperfect recall of jays mean I have little oaks to pot. Buried acorn stashes, if not dug up and eaten, make lovely saplings. There is a theory, a way of looking at things, that I will abbreviate by saying: 'the forgetfulness of jays is the replenishment of oaks'. Indeed, most of the oak forests of post ice-age ancient Britain were sown by these dear birds. By non-doing, everything is done. What teachers!

A gentle reminder that to rest is not to 'do nothing’. There is a big difference between distracting/numbing ourselves through activities and lying in bed focused on witnessing breath or even, sleeping. One is a consumption that affects our energies and insides and keeps us stuck, and the latter, a state of restoration for our bodies and emancipation of our spirits and like water, continue to flow into nothingness.

Having said that, whatever it is you truly enjoy doing and brings you relief (even if it is bingeing on Netflix) WITHOUT any feelings of guilt or fatigue afterwards- do it.

This is the perfect time to practice the Daoist philosophy of ‘wu wei’ (non-doing) so we can foster a reverence for the natural world and enfold our Being- choices and habits- in the Great Mother’s rhythm.
