I made the mistake of sitting a few seats away from someone on the train who’s been very loudly been talking on the phone for 20 minutes. I’m not feeling confident for the rest of the journey 🙃
.
I really enjoy train journeys for giving me an excuse to read uninterrupted for at least an hour. The same sentiment can be applied to anything else of course, as I also enjoy writing/planning on the train!
.
I picked up this book from the library this morning when returning Darkdawn. It sounded really cute and whimsical when I heard @afrolicthroughfiction talk about it, and it also works for #mythtakereads - win win, right?

My readathon/ readalong books for this month. I'm picking up Testament rather than Gospel because I read it not too long ago, but I still haven't started either of them yet 😅

So I basically failed the #contemporaryathon and only read one book but that one book completed all the challenges and was a 5 star read so maybe I didn’t fail. I posted my last vlog for the mythtakereadathon #mythtakereads though it was a fun vlog to film. ————————————————————————

Day 2 of October and I’ve found myself in the library because of #libraryloves .
I‘m trying to buy fewer books and use the library more for impulse pick ups. The top book is very demonstrative of that because I wouldn’t have searched it out, but I’m not displeased with borrowing it.
.
Likewise with The Deathless Girls - I kept walking past it in Waterstones, but didn’t pick it up because money. I feel like it’ll be quite a popular book because it’s new, so I had to pick it up when I saw it, but also because October. It seems like it should be spooky?
.
The final book is the sequel to the September/October book of the month for #mythtakereads which I really enjoyed. Why not pick up the sequel this month!
.
I’m not sure when I’ll get to read these because I already had a few books on this month’s tbr, but we’ll just see what I’m feeling. Like I said, I feel like I should read The Deathless Girls because of autumn (not that you can tell from this picture - you don’t know how much it was raining yesterday or how windy it is right now).
.
Would you recommend any of these books?

Finally posted my mythtake readathon vlog. #mythtakereads
I’m not vlogging during contemporaryathon I have so many videos to edit and post still. Who knows when I’ll film a reading vlog again definitely not anytime soon.

I was looking through my bookish notebook yesterday and mourning for how nice my handwriting when I started this. I don’t think it looks bad now, but it was so neat and tidy when I first started!
.
I think that’s down to the pen I use. I’ve been using a biro recently, but my friend gave me these two the other day and I’m so excited to use them. One’s a beautiful fountain pen and the other is a very nifty biodegradable pen - once I’m done with it, apparently I can plant the whole thing and it grows into something!
.
These notes are from when I read Daughter of the Forest for the Myth Take Reads book of the month and I loved it! If you check their Twitter page, they’re giving away a beautiful, rare copy of the book.

I certainly went a little crazy when buying books in August. 😅 #Sorrynotsorry It's all worth it though. Especially Priory of the Orange tree. Can't wait to read that!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Q o t d:
What's a book you've recently bought and want to read in September?! It's the Binding and Gospel of Loki for me!
Reading Gospel of Loki for #mythtakereads as I have said on my prev post! I am actually already starting to delve into it. /.\

Here we go, #sofaereadsseptember Day 1!! •

This is my tbr for this month...I've kept it small as we all know I'm only going to manage the one! I still haven't finished my August read yet! •

The Gospel of Loki is the book of the month for #mythtakereads which I'm super happy about because; I already own it, I started it a while ago and never finished it, and it's Norse mythology so yay!

It's the time of the year where we are all getting ready to go back to hogwarts. :')
Are you excited? I certainly am!
Especially because my TBR is interesting. Cx
I have decided to go the relaxed route for this month after participating in tons of readathons and I feel rather shagged.
But these are the books I wish to finish by this month:
1)City of Brass, thanks to @thisgirlhasn0name who picked this as my next read.
2)Master of Sorrow, thanks to @bookstolivby for her ravings about this book.
3)Blood of an Exile because this looks awesome.
4)The binding thanks to the #bookstagram community.
All in all, I am excited for my journey back to hogwarts!
5) I forgot one more but Gospel of Loki for #mythtakereads

Here’s your scheduled reminder of my love for Priory and The Bone Season. I’m actually going to be hosting a three month readalong for The Bone Season series (so far) running from October-December and I couldn’t be more excited! 🙌🏻 I haven’t done the official announcement with graphics and specifics yet but stay tuned! This time around I’ll be annotating my paperbacks, and I can’t wait for The Priory paperback to come out so I can reread and do the same! If you’re intrigued about how I annotate my books, I uploaded a video recently all about it. There’s a link to my channel in my bio if you’re interested! ✨.

I’m currently reading The Wren Hunt for #mythtakereadathon , it was a monthly book for #mythtakereads a little while ago. I’m about 50 pages in so far and it’s good, I’m kind of getting into the story but I’m just in such a weird reading mood. I’m almost in a reading slump but not 🤷🏻‍♀️ , it’s weird. I think that I kind of want to read a different genre than fantasy but it goes against the readathon. Also I’m craving some lighter, no brain kind of reads because of all the books and articles I’m reading for uni so I have a bit of a dilemma! I think I’m unfortunately not going to take part in the other readathon I’d planed to do this month because I need to take the pressure off reading that I seem to have put on myself! Anyway there’s my little reading update, how’s everyone else’s reading going this month? .

Who wore it better? 💁‍♀️
.
I read The Children of Jocasta on Saturday for the #basicallyreadathon and I really enjoyed it. I gave it 4 ⭐️s.
.
It’s also the second book I finished for the #mythtakereadathon and it fit the prompt to read a mythology retelling (Oedipus and Antigone).
.
I didn’t dislike it at the start, but I was a little confused. I was quickly sucked in, however, and I soon fell in love with the story. The characters were amazing and so was Natalie Haynes’ writing.
.
I’ll definitely be checking out her other books soon and I’ll probably buy my own copy of this too in time!
.
In other news, my joint booktube channel has finally gone live. It’s not yet linked in my bio, but you can find us at The Indecisive Readers!
.
I also reviewed Wicked Fox yesterday (that link is in my bio), but the former is much more exciting!

My endeavour to become more creative. (It's not working, I know.)
But either way, How's it going? I have an idea of the question to ask but I've no idea what to write. 😭
I can say though, this attempt has been real fun. Totally inspired by @afrolicthroughfiction and her drawings on pictures.

Hardback/paperback? Audiobook/Ebook? I love all of them, btw. Recently got obsessed with Audiobook thanks to Ashleigh as well and #mythtakereads july.

Honestly, how can you get a nice picture of nine books, especially when one of them is an ebook 🙄

I know it’s late, but I’m afraid you’ll soon come to realise that I am actually quite slow at doing things.
.
But anyway, here is a clutter of books that I read in July (minus the audiobook I also listened to). I managed to read so many because of the #bookjunkietrials encouraging me to read a lot. Overall, it was a pretty good month. At the very least, I didn’t have any that I really disliked!
.
1. Magyk, Angie Sage ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
2. To Kill A Kingdom, Alexandra Christo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3. Obsidio, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
4. The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
5. Stardust, Neil Gaiman (audiobook) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
6. How Do You Like Me Now?, Holly Bourne ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
7. The Mime Order, Samantha Shannon ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
8. The Wickerlight, Mary Watson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
9. Circe, Madeline Miller (July #mythtakereads book of the month) ⭐️⭐️⭐️
10. Ink, Alice Broadway ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Here’s my library book haul from today. I also brought Tipping the Velvet from their sale books, I’ve seen it on #bookstagram a lot so I’m intrigued. .
.
#mythtakereadathon update, I’m just over half way through The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (I’m loving it btw). I’m think about changing my TBR for the rest of the readathon by swapping Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Mariller for The Wren Hunt by Mary Watson because it fills more prompts and it’s half the size! I’m realising I really don’t have time to read loads of over 500 page books 🤷🏻‍♀️. Does anyone know if Daughter of Smoke and Bone is based on any folklore or myths? I really want to read it next but I don’t know if it fits the readathon #bookishproblems .

Got this from Barnes & Noble today for the #mythtakereads readathon. My dog barked at me the entire time I tried to take this picture 😂

Day one of the #mythtakereadathon and, considering I was hoping to read six books in the next fortnight, I’m doing pathetically, really. I’m only about seven chapters in and I’m not even reading it now 🙈
.
Still, I have been tidying and I’m now going to try to write a blog post - both important things!
.
I also had to go into town this morning to talk to someone about a PR work experience thing in a fashion company, hence the heels! It was stressful to know what to wear just for coffee with them 😅
.
I *think* (emphasis on think - we’ve got to see how the first few days go!) I’m going to try vlogging this readathon because our booktube channel has to start somewhere - wish me luck!

I’m finally reading The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon! I’m glad I picked it for the #mythtakereadathon because as of 100 pages in I’m loving it. So far there’s a lot going on, a lot of perspectives and a lot of history/politics but I think Shannon’s writing makes it easy to keep up with because it’s so readable.
.
.
This fits the prompts: Host recommendation, Animal on the cover and Asian influence.

Mini book haul and a quick review. I collected all my stamps with my @waterstones card midweek and went back to claim my free book today.
I read the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood as a follow up to the Song of Achilles. It was witty take on Penelope and Odysseus’ story. Penelope (cousin to Helen of Troy) stays home and waits for Odysseus to return from the war. Full of commentary on gender and status. Penelope is speaking from the underworld in our time, having lots of time to reflect has left her with a lots of clarity on her life with her cunning husband.

Part of the reason I found this so rewarding was because I’d read Circe first and was familiar with the world and characters. Am not sure if it would work for those unfamiliar.
Clever, sarcastic novella I flew through the 196 pages.

3.5 stars

inspired by the lovely @beigepages and @afrolicthroughfiction, I picked up The Odyssey a few weeks back from the charity shop as it was a brand new edition and I couldn’t resist🤦🏼‍♀️ but I’m also hoping to delve deeper into Greek mythology as it is so incredibly fascinating📜 I’m also going to be starting my first year at university next month for BA Hons English Literature (i’m both equally ecstatic and terrified😅), so I’m hoping we cover it at some point, which I’m pretty sure we most likely will! if you haven’t checked out all things #MythTakeReads, I really do recommend as both Charlotte and Ashleigh work so hard on spreading a love for mythology in literature😊 /

So, Circe was the book of the month for July for #mythtakereads. It’s a book I’ve been looking forward to reading for ages, so I was obviously really excited when this was announced.
.
I loved the way this was written. It definitely felt like an immortal goddess was narrating it and describing her disappointment with the world. Her character felt powerful, the witchy vibes were strong, and I was generally pleased.
.
My favourite thing was how other myths were incorporated into her story, especially how Madeline Miller made big myths seems small.
.
I wish there was more we could read about Circe, as well as the other Greek goddesses, like Athena and Artemis.
.
Unfortunately, I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to because the last third just felt a bit domestic. Although I was glad she got a sort of happy ending and I knew her story wouldn’t always involve action, I just felt a bit disappointed by the end. It also took me a long time to get through the same third, so I obviously had to take that into consideration when giving it a rating.
.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
Also, I promise my clothes don’t always match my book, but this time 🤷‍♀️

This is my ambitious #mythtakereadathon TBR. I managed to pick books that are all over 500 pages and I’m not sure how that happened 🤷🏻‍♀️, I just really want to read all of these so I’m just going to try my best to read them during the two week readathon (5th- 18th August). Also hopefully joining in on the 24h #basicallyreadathon (10th August) will help me finish either Children of Blood and Bone or the Priory of the Orange Tree because they’ve both been on my TBR for ages. ———————————————
Anyway here are the categories that these books fit:
🐉The Priory of the Orange Tree (Host rec, animal on the cover, Asian influence)
🐉The Kingdom of Copper (over 400 pages, green or yellow on the cover, mythology retelling) .
🐉Children of Blood and Bone (written by POC, mythology retelling, host rec)
🐉Daughter of the Forest (Book of the month, written by a woman)

It’s ONE WEEK until the #mythtakereadathon!! And here’s my TBR 🙌🏻 I feel like this is somewhat ambitious for two weeks, but I’m really excited to get to them all so I hope I can tick them off my TBR! Have you read any of them?
.
.
Besides the MythTakeReadathon, I’ll also be participating in the 24 Hour #BasicallyReadathon AND the #FemmeFanTale readathon in August. I have a full August TBR video coming on Wednesday so I’ll share all the books I hope to read then, but I’m super excited for them all 🙌🏻 Are you taking part in any readathons in August? Let me know! .

Someone pleeeease tell me I’m not insane.
.
This is my TBR for the #mythtakereadathon (a two week readathon 🤦‍♀️). I want to read all the books on this pile and I couldn’t decide which ones to focus on, so I’m going to try to rush through them all. Also, some of them are library books, so they sort of need including too...
.
The Hand, The Eye & The Heart
- The book of the month
- Asian influences
The Children of Jocasta
- Mythology retelling
The Blue Salt Road
- Animal on the cover
Gumiho/Wicked Fox
- Host recommendation
- Written by a POC
Tangleweed and Brine
- Written by a woman
The Kingdom of Copper
- Green on the cover
- Over 400 pages
.
Whilst there are six on here, a couple of them are shorter, so I have my fingers crossed I’ll be okay! There are also a lot that overlap, so I know which books are my priorities and which I’ll be able to get away with not finishing.
.
I’ll be taking advantage of the collaboration with the #basicallyreadathon too - while I won’t be reading a book that’s been on my TBR forever, I’ll definitely be trying to read as much as I can!
.
At #yalc on Friday, I got my copy of The Hand, The Eye & The Heart signed. Zoe Marriott’s talk was so interesting (more to come on that later) and OF COURSE I told her that it was the #mythtakereads book of the month in August - she was so excited!

CIRCE // MADELINE MILLER ✩✩✩✩✩⠀
⠀
“The worst of my cowardice had been sweated out. In its place was a giddy spark. I will not be like a bird bred in a cage, I thought, too dull to fly even when the door stands open. I stepped into those woods and my life began.”⠀
⠀
I finished Circe a little while ago and I wanted to talk more about this wonderful, warm, intriguing novel. ⠀
⠀
The eponymous character Circe is very much a bit player in Greek mythology. She is a titan and a witch, and has just a handful of appearances in surviving texts, most notably the Odyssey. ⠀
⠀
Despite this Circe has really captured literary attention, and is very much the archetype of the dangerous predatory femme-fatal.⠀
⠀
In this novel @madeline.e.miller takes this flat stereotype and weaves her a more complete narrative and I ADORED it. Circe is a wonderful character, so full of life and texture and I rooted for her so damn hard the whole way through. ⠀
⠀
Miller also writes masterfully. The descriptions of Circe’s island home, and her journey to discover how to use her powers were stunningly rendered. The whole story feel so vivid and lush and makes me want to go and live on Aiaia with only wolves and lions for company, harvesting herbs in the moonlight and weaving magic for myself. ⠀
⠀
I would definitely recommend Circe to anyone who wants an emotive and warm read about a woman creating her own place in the world and learning to own her power. It’s got enough classical references to keep a massive nerd like me happy, but not so many that you couldn’t enjoy the story without that knowledge - though I would definitely recommend keeping google handy so you can learn more about people like Medea who crop up in the novel, and go down that sweet sweet mythology rabbit hole.⠀

Competent writing, nice detail, and basically everything about the Trojan War is there, and yet Colleen McCullough's THE SONG OF TROY didn't really make that huge of an impression on me. The novel reads like McCullough wrote it while ticking off a checklist of things about the Trojan War but didn't stop to think about things like "okay but what can I do with all this stuff, how can I explore all these multifaceted characters in an interesting way". To me, the story feels a bit hollow.
.
That said, probably my favourite thing about the novel is the characterisation. The unfortunate thing is, however, that you just don't get to spend much time with any single character since the POV keeps shifting. Which is understandable and necessary since the novel covers an entire ten-year-long war and the lead-up to it, but it does make you feel less attached to the characters since the moment you start feeling like there's something there, the POV switches and you might never get to go back to that character again.
.
I especially enjoyed McCullough's portrayals of Odysseus and Helen. Tbh, I'm very surprised that I ended up liking Odysseus since I have literally never liked him all that much in anything. But McCullough really managed to portray this sly, crafty, morally grey character in a very intriguing light. (I also really like the dynamic between Odysseus & Diomedes!) Re: Helen, I have a very clear vision of her and her motives, and so far this novel has probably come the closest to capturing even a slight echo of that (i.e. morally grey with ambivalent loyalties).
.
What I really missed, though, were the gods and goddesses! They are referred to in the novel but they do not appear as characters. McCullough comes up with realistic explanations to all the fantastical elements in the original myths, and she even changes up some other things, like the reason for the fight between Achilles and Agamemnon.
.
Would rec to anyone who is interested in getting into Greek mythology, and especially the Trojan War, but is intimidated by picking up The Iliad and The Odyssey.
.

CIRCE // MADELINE MILLER ⠀
⠀
“I climbed the peaks where the cypresses speared black into the sky, then clambered down to the orchards and vineyards where purple grapes grew thick as coral. I walked the hills, the buzzing meadows of thyme and lilac, and set my footprints across the yellow beaches.”⠀
⠀
@madeline.e.miller’s writing makes me swoon, the passages describing Aiaia are so sensual and lush, especially compared to the stark and confined existence Circe had before her exile. For some reason reading about Circe’s life with the titans I pictured the scenes in my head in a weird glowing gunmetal-green, and suddenly there's this Wizard of Oz moment in my head where Circe arrives on the island and colours flood into the story. ⠀
⠀
It might be a strange link to make, but these passages of Circe remind me of A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf. Circe describes the new found freedom of being exiled - no longer under the gaze of her father, and the suffocating place she came from. Like Woolf’s ideal space for women’s writing, Circe is finally free to explore and discover her own power, to carve her identity anew, for herself and, like the world around her, she blossoms. ⠀

CIRCE // MADELINE MILLER ⠀ ⠀ “I climbed the peaks where the cypresses speared black into the sky, then clambered down to the orchards and vineyards where purple grapes grew thick as coral. I don’t know about you, but on this rather warm day, I will be hiding inside, with a fan pointed at my face. I love the nice weather and I hate hiding inside when the sun is shining. But it’s too hot today.
.
The start of the month was unusually quick for me, reading wise. I read five books (and one audiobook) in the first couple of weeks and then just. Stopped. I wanted to read last week, but I just never seemed to find the time. I mean, I had an excuse (graduation), but still. It felt frustrating.
.
I started both these last week and I finished The Mime Order last night. I’m actually further through Circe than where I’m reading from, but I didn’t completely pay attention to the audiobook when I listened to it. I’m hoping to get through a chunk of it this evening because I’m really enjoying it!
.
In fact, I think I’ve more or less enjoyed every book I’ve read this month.

What I love about retellings? How mind blown you can get. Each retelling has their unique elements. If done right, it can be amazing. Circe is a Greek Mythology retelling about a certain Golden Witch and I can say that this was the best version of Circe I've read. Her struggles felt real and relatable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What is your favourite retelling? I'd love to know. Comment down below! ↓readathons↓

Have you read any Mulan retellings? How about this one? .

The Hand, The Eye and The Heart is our August book of the month for Myth-Take! Why have we announced it early? Well, because of the #MythTakeReadathon! Our challenge to read the book of the month is worth double points, and so we figured we’d announce it a little earlier than usual and give you time to scout it out. I’m so excited to be reading this non-binary Mulan retelling 🙌🏻✨ .
.
.
Remember, you don’t have to take part in Myth-Take every single month to be part of it - just join us when you want to! You also don’t *have* to be participating in the readathon to read this one along with us - though of course we hope you do! OR if you really don’t fancy reading this one, you can choose a retelling of your own choice and tell us all about it! Any retelling will do ☺️✨ just remember the use the hashtag #MythTakeReads for all your updates! .
.
Another one I have my eyes on at the moment is Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. I know I’ll end up breaking soon and buying it 🙈 I really shouldn’t but hey ho, books are my life aha. .

Finally made it onto Circe, I've still got a few weeks of July left to take part in #mythtakereads I love knowing what I'm going to read next! If you don't already, go follow @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages who both came up with the idea!

Do you ever read outside the house? I always have done on public transport or audiobooking while walking, but this summer I’m making an active choice to head to my favourite coffee place at least once a week and spending some time reading there. It’s really helping my my MH, and it feels so much more motivating when I specifically go somewhere TO read. I love it!
.
.

On a related note, spending my days reading Greek plays, Myth retellings, and being able to class it as productive research is the BEST feeling 😭🙌🏻 that and the added fun of #MythTakeReads is really getting me through the summer. The joys of reading, eh?

What's your current read?
#allthebooksjuly19 - current read and summer drink
I'm reading Circe atm, which is the July book for #mythtakereads , and I'm currently 56 pages in. Not much has happened yet but I love all the Greek mythology in it so much!! And hopefully it'll get to the main storyline soon!

Are you a fan of readathons? ✨ I feel like I have quite a few readathon related updates! It’s funny because I didn’t used to like them, and now I LOVE them! So much so...
.
.

I’m co-hosting a readathon with @beigepages as part of #mythtakereads!! I have a whole video announcement to explain bingo board challenges, point scoring systems and the lot, so head to the link in my bio for that! 🙌🏻 we’re both so so excited about this, so please do join us if you can! In August I’m also planning on taking part in the FemmeFanTale readathon hosted by @jeansthoughts and @jill.scott.9 too, so I’m super excited to build a TBR from all the prompts both from ours and theirs! .
.
As for the readathon I’m taking part in NOW, I’m about to finish my FIFTH book for @the.book.junkie.trials! I’ve been reading so quickly lately and I’m THRILLED. Let’s hope the momentum keeps up for August! .

I’m on book four of this month for the Book Junkie Trials (book two not pictured because it was on my kindle).
.
Six months ago, I’m not sure I could have imagined reading that many books in a month, let alone in the first week or so!
.
I’ve enjoyed the first three books I’ve read this month and I’m sure this’ll follow. I’ve heard really good things about The Song of Achilles and everyone keeps telling me how good it is, so I’ve got high expectations. .
I keep forgetting that I’m reading this for Weeping Falls, so I’ll probably cry. I think I’ll need to carry some tissues around with me this week 🙊
.
I’ve got a lot of books this month that I really want to read, which is a little bit worrying. I’m hoping they’re all going to be really good, but what if they’re not ? 😅
.
After this, I think, will be Circe - I’ve got the audiobook and a train journey coming up. It’ll be the perfect time to start, I think!

.
It’s the first time I’ve set a loose TBR list for a month. Whilst I didn’t stick to it completely, I did to an extent.
.
I was mostly impressed with the books I read in June. There was only one that was a bit of a disappointment. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as good as it had the opportunity to be.
.
The Flatshare, Beth O’Leary - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
Aurora Rising, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff - ⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The City of Brass, S.A. Chakraborty - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The Priory of the Orange Tree, Samantha Shannon - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The Bone Season, Samantha Shannon - ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
.
The highlights of the month were definitely The Flatshare and The Priory of the Orange Tree. These have definitely become favourites of mine and will be for a long time. They were beautiful and have captured my heart. I won’t forget them any time soon. .
I also really loved The City of Brass and The Bone Season. Both are the first in a series and I have high hopes for the rest of the books. .
Despite being #pridemonth I didn’t read as many LGBT+ books as I would have liked to. I have, however, bought more books that fit this bill to read in the future.

EK. Big steps. I bought a Kindle. 😅 I have been adamantly opposed to electronic forms of literature ever since @amazonkindle was introduced eons ago. BUT, recently I realized borrowing e-books from the @durhamcountylibrary and downloading them directly to a Kindle was a thing. Now I can download all my random fantasy books in a second FOR FREE. In other words, good for my wallet and good for my overflowing bookshelves. #mythtakereads #bookstagram

Now, I know this looks big and you're probably thinking (you're not, I am) but Lucy, you don't have time to read all these books. Well! I don't plan to read them all, 3 of them I have already started and the others are just ones I hope to read over the next couple of months. Summer is till September, right? •

Circe is my next read for #mythtakereads July pick...I just need to finish Caraval first!

[gifted] Where’s one place you NEED to visit, at some point in your life?
Reading Ancient Greek literature and mythologies has made me long to visit Greece one day! The very thought of walking through places I recognise only in stories, of seeing ancient ruins and trying to fathom the society that created them...I need it, one day. I can feel it pulling at me and I just KNOW that if I can manage it, I’ll be visiting Greece a fair few times in my future. .
.
The lovely folks at @mapiful contacted me about sending one of their maps my way, and I have to admit I was way too excited for it 🙈 But what to create? I haven’t travelled to many places so far, and felt no particular need to make one for a place I’d been. So why not create one for a place I long to visit one day? Now I have this map sat above my desk, a reminder of the future travel plans I have to look forward to. A memorial of sorts to the place that produced the literature and mythologies that rule my life now. With my studies gradually turning to focus on Greek myth and the co-hosting of #mythtakereads, Greece never feels quite so far. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I get to fulfill that hope and this gorgeous map will become a reminder of the trips I went on ✨💚.
.
Thank you Mapiful for sending this my way! .
If you want to create your own map, I have the discount code SUNNY10 that you folks can use - valid until the end of the month! .

Happy July! This month I’m participating in the @the.book.junkie.trials ! I’m a #Bard and as a Bard, a lot of the prompts pushed me towards non-YA books. With Circe for #mythtakereads it’s an ambitious TBR but I’m excited to say that most of it consists of books out of my comfort zone!
•
⭐️ The Hobbit - this will be a reread
⭐️ The Wicked and the Damned - a horror sci-fi set in the Warhammer universe
⭐️ Stardust - this is the group read
⭐️Monument 14 - my indulgent pick because I can’t resist a YA-end-of-the-world-trapped-in-a-Walmart story
⭐️ War of the Roses - it’s been on my bookshelf for ages!

what’s on your TBR for July?
-
Do you like to plan out your reads, or do you just read what you’re in the mood for? I do a bit of both to be honest. Although this month I have a more structured TBR than usual.
-
I’m going to be taking part in @thereadingrush (formerly booktubeathon) and trying to read 7 books🤞🏻I’m going to do a full post talking about my TBR, but here’s a quick summary:
✨purple book: Mirage (purple under the jacket + purpled sprayed edges)
✨read in the same spot: the odyssey
✨meant to read last year: the children of Jocasta
✨debut: wicked fox
✨non-human character: the song of achilles ✨five or more words in the title: the ten thousand doors of january ✨book to movie adaptation: to all the boys I’ve loved before
-
other than that, I’m planning on rereading Circe for #mythtakereads 💓 I have a couple of ARCs I want to get to as well, and I need to finish my current reads. If you want to read more about my July TBR, click the link in my bio to read my blog post☺️

• My July TBR! •
I don’t usually create a TBR because I’m so bad at sticking to them (any fellow mood-readers here?), but this month I’ll be taking part in @the.book.junkie.trials readathon so I just had to make one! I’ll be VERY surprised if I manage to get to all of these - the first five (from left to right) are a must, but the rest are for if I have some spare time to squeeze them in. But fingers crossed, I’ll get through most of these - if not all - because they’re all fantasy and mythology books that I’ve been meaning to get to for ages! First stop is my reread of Circe for #mythtakereads. I’m annotating and listening to the audiobook this time round and loving it already! .

Lately, I've been on a bit of a Greek mythology kick, and I just finished rereading #theiliad, my favourite ancient epic, so I decided to join #mythtakereads hosted by @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages ☺️ The theme for July is Greek mythology, and I'm looking forward to reading HELEN OF TROY by Margaret George. It's a retelling of the Trojan War from the point of view of Helen. She is commonly held to be the reason for the war, so it will be interesting to experience the story as narrated by her. (Based on the back cover, I don't think George has gone with anything even close to my personal interpretation of Helen as a a character, but I'm hoping to enjoy the novel all the same!)

Are you planning on reading a Greek myth retelling this month?

Circe 🌟
I'm about to start a new book for July.
I would never have said I would be interested in reading any fantasy, mythology, retellings etc but something about this book has been drawing me to it! I've gone to pick it up a number of times but never committed until I stumbled across @afrolicthroughfiction and #MythTakeReads I think now is the perfect time to give it a go!

It’s almost July! Are you participating in any readathons? There are so many next month! I will be participating in the #mythtakereads book club. July’s book is Circe. It’s been sitting on my shelf ever since it was a Book of the Month choice - so it’s about time I get to it.

Which is your favourite fairy tale? ✨
.
.

Stumbled across this 1964 edition of Grimms’ Fairy Tales yesterday while in a secondhand bookshop. It’s covered in a girl and deer print (surprisingly, compared to the dust jacket design) and complete with some stunning illustrations - one of which for my fave, Rapunzel ✨

I finally managed to finish this month's #mythtakereads 🏰

I liked most of the characters with one major exception, the fairly complicated plot and the split points of view. However I wasn't really a fan of the 'romance' and tbh I'm not sure I really want to call it that. And that ending. That ending! The more I think on it, the more I need the next book.
Overall: 4💫

FULL REVIEW ON BLOG. .
I may not have been able to find my way to the ziggurats in this story, but I found my way to the only ones near me. .
The City of Brass was June’s book of the month for #mythtakereads and I quickly fell in love within pages. The world S.A. Chakraborty created was beautiful, every character in it felt real and the magic was so seamlessly a part of the story that I couldn’t imagine a world without it. .
Nahri quickly became a favourite of mine and I’d be willing to protect her if she wasn’t so strong on her own. I really enjoyed her chapters and, although I didn’t enjoy Ali’s chapters as much, I never disliked them. .
I feel like I haven’t managed to read a non romance book without a romance in it for a while and this was no different. I really wasn’t a fan of the romances in this, but I think they made sense in a narrative sense. .
The ending was intense. I was just settling on the fact that it wouldn’t have a dramatic ending, but I was very wrong. So much happened at the end and so much information was presented to the reader, but it set up for the sequel really well. And the sequel was ordered within hours of finishing the first 🙊
.
Next month’s read is Circe and it’s something I’ve been meaning to read for ages, so I can’t wait to finally check it out!

Still on the TBR pile! •

But this sunnier weather today gives me ALL the holiday feels! Some of my fondest holiday memories have been on the Greek isles. •

July's #MythTakeReads by @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages is Circe! I'm definitely going to be jumping right into after I've finished current read. •

Have you been lucky enough to get away yet this year? Or any plans on the horizon?? Tell me, where are you going!

Have you read Circe? Or - like me - do you fancy a reread? 👀

Our July book of the month for #mythtakereads is Circe! Which means, of course, the theme for July is Greek mythology 🙌🏻 you KNOW I’m excited about this! As well as rereading Circe, I’m going to be reading The Children of Jocasta (Oedipus and Antigone retelling) and The Lost Books of the Odyssey (The Odyssey retelling), and I cannot WAIT! .
.

If you don’t fancy reading Circe with us, please do still feel free to join us with a book of your choice! Just use the hashtag #mythtakereads for anything fantasy retelling based ☺️ we don’t want our book club to become a pressure at all, so read a retelling of your own choice, don’t worry about sticking to our time frames, and just enjoy reading! It’s all we’re here for 💚✨. If you like Greek Mythology at all, stay tuned because we *might* just have a vague plan for another twitter chat sometime soon...😉.

So, what are the chances I’ll get this beast of a book finished by the end of the month, if I’m about halfway through it now?
.
This month is the first time I’ve come up with a loose TBR list. There were a couple I needed to read (as I was borrowing them or was going to lend them to someone), the #mythtakereads book of the month, and a few with LGBT+ representation that I wanted to prioritise reading this month. This was one of them - and I’ve put the others to the side in order to finish this one. .
It’s the first time I’ve tried listening to the audiobook as I’ve read the book. I haven’t been listening to it, though, to further my progress; I’ve been listening back over things I’ve already read, in case I missed anything the first time round. .
I’m really pleased I’ve been reading this because I’ve been enjoying it as much as other people have. I’d heard so many good things and it’s lived up to expectations! I’ve loved the characters and the world and the story - I’ll definitely be chasing my boyfriend to read this soon! That said, I’m glad I’ve been reading this on the kindle because I haven’t had to carry it everywhere 🙊
.
I’m quite glad I chose to read this one this month because I finished The City of Brass quite early in the month and that’s really thrown me because I haven’t finished the #mythtakereads book so early before. I keep thinking they’re due to announce the next one soon, but it’s actually just me being premature 😅 but this has given me an excuse to read another book that fits with the theme of mythology and their retellings, so I can still be having a conversation with them. .
If you’re interested in fantasy books, you should check out the twitter account for the book club (@ MythTakeReads) where there's such a comprehensive list of fantasy books - I can’t stress enough how amazing Ashleigh (@afrolicthroughfiction) and Charlotte (@beigepages) have been! 💛
