What I love about retellings? How mind blown you can get. Each retelling has their unique elements. If done right, it can be amazing. Circe is a Greek Mythology retelling about a certain Golden Witch and I can say that this was the best version of Circe I've read. Her struggles felt real and relatable.

What is your favourite retelling? I'd love to know. Comment down below! ↓readathons↓
Read this for #mythtakereads #medievalathon and @the.book.junkie.trials #readathon

Have you read any Mulan retellings? How about this one? .
.

The Hand, The Eye and The Heart is our August book of the month for Myth-Take! Why have we announced it early? Well, because of the #MythTakeReadathon! Our challenge to read the book of the month is worth double points, and so we figured we’d announce it a little earlier than usual and give you time to scout it out. I’m so excited to be reading this non-binary Mulan retelling 🙌🏻✨ .
.
.
Remember, you don’t have to take part in Myth-Take every single month to be part of it - just join us when you want to! You also don’t *have* to be participating in the readathon to read this one along with us - though of course we hope you do! OR if you really don’t fancy reading this one, you can choose a retelling of your own choice and tell us all about it! Any retelling will do ☺️✨ just remember the use the hashtag #MythTakeReads for all your updates! .
.
Another one I have my eyes on at the moment is Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. I know I’ll end up breaking soon and buying it 🙈 I really shouldn’t but hey ho, books are my life aha. .

Finally made it onto Circe, I've still got a few weeks of July left to take part in #mythtakereads I love knowing what I'm going to read next! If you don't already, go follow @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages who both came up with the idea!

Do you ever read outside the house? I always have done on public transport or audiobooking while walking, but this summer I’m making an active choice to head to my favourite coffee place at least once a week and spending some time reading there. It’s really helping my my MH, and it feels so much more motivating when I specifically go somewhere TO read. I love it!
.
.

On a related note, spending my days reading Greek plays, Myth retellings, and being able to class it as productive research is the BEST feeling 😭🙌🏻 that and the added fun of #MythTakeReads is really getting me through the summer. The joys of reading, eh?

What's your current read?
#allthebooksjuly19 - current read and summer drink
I'm reading Circe atm, which is the July book for #mythtakereads , and I'm currently 56 pages in. Not much has happened yet but I love all the Greek mythology in it so much!! And hopefully it'll get to the main storyline soon!

Are you a fan of readathons? ✨ I feel like I have quite a few readathon related updates! It’s funny because I didn’t used to like them, and now I LOVE them! So much so...
.
.

I’m co-hosting a readathon with @beigepages as part of #mythtakereads!! I have a whole video announcement to explain bingo board challenges, point scoring systems and the lot, so head to the link in my bio for that! 🙌🏻 we’re both so so excited about this, so please do join us if you can! In August I’m also planning on taking part in the FemmeFanTale readathon hosted by @jeansthoughts and @jill.scott.9 too, so I’m super excited to build a TBR from all the prompts both from ours and theirs! .
.
As for the readathon I’m taking part in NOW, I’m about to finish my FIFTH book for @the.book.junkie.trials! I’ve been reading so quickly lately and I’m THRILLED. Let’s hope the momentum keeps up for August! .
.
Are you taking part in any readathons at the minute? Are you planning to take part in any for August? Let me know! .

I’m on book four of this month for the Book Junkie Trials (book two not pictured because it was on my kindle).
.
Six months ago, I’m not sure I could have imagined reading that many books in a month, let alone in the first week or so!
.
I’ve enjoyed the first three books I’ve read this month and I’m sure this’ll follow. I’ve heard really good things about The Song of Achilles and everyone keeps telling me how good it is, so I’ve got high expectations. .
I keep forgetting that I’m reading this for Weeping Falls, so I’ll probably cry. I think I’ll need to carry some tissues around with me this week 🙊
.
I’ve got a lot of books this month that I really want to read, which is a little bit worrying. I’m hoping they’re all going to be really good, but what if they’re not ? 😅
.
After this, I think, will be Circe - I’ve got the audiobook and a train journey coming up. It’ll be the perfect time to start, I think!

LINK TO JUNE WRAP UP IN BIO.
.
It’s the first time I’ve set a loose TBR list for a month. Whilst I didn’t stick to it completely, I did to an extent.
.
I was mostly impressed with the books I read in June. There was only one that was a bit of a disappointment. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as good as it had the opportunity to be.
.
The Flatshare, Beth O’Leary - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
Aurora Rising, Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff - ⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The City of Brass, S.A. Chakraborty - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The Priory of the Orange Tree, Samantha Shannon - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
.
The Bone Season, Samantha Shannon - ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
.
The highlights of the month were definitely The Flatshare and The Priory of the Orange Tree. These have definitely become favourites of mine and will be for a long time. They were beautiful and have captured my heart. I won’t forget them any time soon. .
I also really loved The City of Brass and The Bone Season. Both are the first in a series and I have high hopes for the rest of the books. .
Despite being #pridemonth I didn’t read as many LGBT+ books as I would have liked to. I have, however, bought more books that fit this bill to read in the future.

EK. Big steps. I bought a Kindle. 😅 I have been adamantly opposed to electronic forms of literature ever since @amazonkindle was introduced eons ago. BUT, recently I realized borrowing e-books from the @durhamcountylibrary and downloading them directly to a Kindle was a thing. Now I can download all my random fantasy books in a second FOR FREE. In other words, good for my wallet and good for my overflowing bookshelves. #mythtakereads #bookstagram

@rhirhireader tagged me to show my #summertbrstack #summertbrpile... •

Now, I know this looks big and you're probably thinking (you're not, I am) but Lucy, you don't have time to read all these books. Well! I don't plan to read them all, 3 of them I have already started and the others are just ones I hope to read over the next couple of months. Summer is till September, right? •

Circe is my next read for #mythtakereads July pick...I just need to finish Caraval first!

[gifted] Where’s one place you NEED to visit, at some point in your life?
Reading Ancient Greek literature and mythologies has made me long to visit Greece one day! The very thought of walking through places I recognise only in stories, of seeing ancient ruins and trying to fathom the society that created them...I need it, one day. I can feel it pulling at me and I just KNOW that if I can manage it, I’ll be visiting Greece a fair few times in my future. .
.
The lovely folks at @mapiful contacted me about sending one of their maps my way, and I have to admit I was way too excited for it 🙈 But what to create? I haven’t travelled to many places so far, and felt no particular need to make one for a place I’d been. So why not create one for a place I long to visit one day? Now I have this map sat above my desk, a reminder of the future travel plans I have to look forward to. A memorial of sorts to the place that produced the literature and mythologies that rule my life now. With my studies gradually turning to focus on Greek myth and the co-hosting of #mythtakereads, Greece never feels quite so far. Hopefully it won’t be too long before I get to fulfill that hope and this gorgeous map will become a reminder of the trips I went on ✨💚.
.
Thank you Mapiful for sending this my way! .
If you want to create your own map, I have the discount code SUNNY10 that you folks can use - valid until the end of the month! .

Happy July! This month I’m participating in the @the.book.junkie.trials ! I’m a #Bard and as a Bard, a lot of the prompts pushed me towards non-YA books. With Circe for #mythtakereads it’s an ambitious TBR but I’m excited to say that most of it consists of books out of my comfort zone!
•
⭐️ The Hobbit - this will be a reread
⭐️ The Wicked and the Damned - a horror sci-fi set in the Warhammer universe
⭐️ Stardust - this is the group read
⭐️Monument 14 - my indulgent pick because I can’t resist a YA-end-of-the-world-trapped-in-a-Walmart story
⭐️ War of the Roses - it’s been on my bookshelf for ages!

what’s on your TBR for July?
-
Do you like to plan out your reads, or do you just read what you’re in the mood for? I do a bit of both to be honest. Although this month I have a more structured TBR than usual.
-
I’m going to be taking part in @thereadingrush (formerly booktubeathon) and trying to read 7 books🤞🏻I’m going to do a full post talking about my TBR, but here’s a quick summary:
✨purple book: Mirage (purple under the jacket + purpled sprayed edges)
✨read in the same spot: the odyssey
✨meant to read last year: the children of Jocasta
✨debut: wicked fox
✨non-human character: the song of achilles ✨five or more words in the title: the ten thousand doors of january ✨book to movie adaptation: to all the boys I’ve loved before
-
other than that, I’m planning on rereading Circe for #mythtakereads 💓 I have a couple of ARCs I want to get to as well, and I need to finish my current reads. If you want to read more about my July TBR, click the link in my bio to read my blog post☺️

• My July TBR! •
I don’t usually create a TBR because I’m so bad at sticking to them (any fellow mood-readers here?), but this month I’ll be taking part in @the.book.junkie.trials readathon so I just had to make one! I’ll be VERY surprised if I manage to get to all of these - the first five (from left to right) are a must, but the rest are for if I have some spare time to squeeze them in. But fingers crossed, I’ll get through most of these - if not all - because they’re all fantasy and mythology books that I’ve been meaning to get to for ages! First stop is my reread of Circe for #mythtakereads. I’m annotating and listening to the audiobook this time round and loving it already! .

Of course, my own 24 readathon #BasicallyReadathon on July 6, but also the @the.book.junkie.trials and the #mythtakereads! I'll be reading Circe for both of them 😏 I tried reading it last year but I couldn't really get into it, however, I'm excited to give it another try!

July 1st!! I'm so excited for this month because I'll be participating in 3 readathons! Of course, my own 24 readathon #BasicallyReadathon on July 6, but also the @the.book.junkie.trials and the #mythtakereads! I'll be reading Circe for both of them 😏 I tried reading it last year but I couldn't really get into it, however, I'm excited to give it another try! . . If you want to see my entire July TBR, check out my video! Link in bio. . . Lately, I've been on a bit of a Greek mythology kick, and I just finished rereading #theiliad, my favourite ancient epic, so I decided to join #mythtakereads hosted by @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages ☺️ The theme for July is Greek mythology, and I'm looking forward to reading HELEN OF TROY by Margaret George. It's a retelling of the Trojan War from the point of view of Helen. She is commonly held to be the reason for the war, so it will be interesting to experience the story as narrated by her. (Based on the back cover, I don't think George has gone with anything even close to my personal interpretation of Helen as a a character, but I'm hoping to enjoy the novel all the same!)

Are you planning on reading a Greek myth retelling this month?

Circe 🌟
I'm about to start a new book for July.
I would never have said I would be interested in reading any fantasy, mythology, retellings etc but something about this book has been drawing me to it! I've gone to pick it up a number of times but never committed until I stumbled across @afrolicthroughfiction and #MythTakeReads I think now is the perfect time to give it a go!

It’s almost July! Are you participating in any readathons? There are so many next month! I will be participating in the #mythtakereads book club. July’s book is Circe. It’s been sitting on my shelf ever since it was a Book of the Month choice - so it’s about time I get to it.

Which is your favourite fairy tale? ✨
.
.

Stumbled across this 1964 edition of Grimms’ Fairy Tales yesterday while in a secondhand bookshop. It’s covered in a girl and deer print (surprisingly, compared to the dust jacket design) and complete with some stunning illustrations - one of which for my fave, Rapunzel ✨

I finally managed to finish this month's #mythtakereads 🏰

I liked most of the characters with one major exception, the fairly complicated plot and the split points of view. However I wasn't really a fan of the 'romance' and tbh I'm not sure I really want to call it that. And that ending. That ending! The more I think on it, the more I need the next book.
Overall: 4💫

I may not have been able to find my way to the ziggurats in this story, but I found my way to the only ones near me. .
The City of Brass was June’s book of the month for #mythtakereads and I quickly fell in love within pages. The world S.A. Chakraborty created was beautiful, every character in it felt real and the magic was so seamlessly a part of the story that I couldn’t imagine a world without it. .
Nahri quickly became a favourite of mine and I’d be willing to protect her if she wasn’t so strong on her own. I really enjoyed her chapters and, although I didn’t enjoy Ali’s chapters as much, I never disliked them. .
I feel like I haven’t managed to read a non romance book without a romance in it for a while and this was no different. I really wasn’t a fan of the romances in this, but I think they made sense in a narrative sense. .
The ending was intense. I was just settling on the fact that it wouldn’t have a dramatic ending, but I was very wrong. So much happened at the end and so much information was presented to the reader, but it set up for the sequel really well. And the sequel was ordered within hours of finishing the first 🙊
.
Next month’s read is Circe and it’s something I’ve been meaning to read for ages, so I can’t wait to finally check it out!

Still on the TBR pile! •

But this sunnier weather today gives me ALL the holiday feels! Some of my fondest holiday memories have been on the Greek isles. •

July's #MythTakeReads by @afrolicthroughfiction and @beigepages is Circe! I'm definitely going to be jumping right into after I've finished current read. •

Have you been lucky enough to get away yet this year? Or any plans on the horizon?? Tell me, where are you going!

Have you read Circe? Or - like me - do you fancy a reread? 👀

Our July book of the month for #mythtakereads is Circe! Which means, of course, the theme for July is Greek mythology 🙌🏻 you KNOW I’m excited about this! As well as rereading Circe, I’m going to be reading The Children of Jocasta (Oedipus and Antigone retelling) and The Lost Books of the Odyssey (The Odyssey retelling), and I cannot WAIT! .
.

If you don’t fancy reading Circe with us, please do still feel free to join us with a book of your choice! Just use the hashtag #mythtakereads for anything fantasy retelling based ☺️ we don’t want our book club to become a pressure at all, so read a retelling of your own choice, don’t worry about sticking to our time frames, and just enjoy reading! It’s all we’re here for 💚✨. If you like Greek Mythology at all, stay tuned because we *might* just have a vague plan for another twitter chat sometime soon...😉.

So, what are the chances I’ll get this beast of a book finished by the end of the month, if I’m about halfway through it now?
.
This month is the first time I’ve come up with a loose TBR list. There were a couple I needed to read (as I was borrowing them or was going to lend them to someone), the #mythtakereads book of the month, and a few with LGBT+ representation that I wanted to prioritise reading this month. This was one of them - and I’ve put the others to the side in order to finish this one. .
It’s the first time I’ve tried listening to the audiobook as I’ve read the book. I haven’t been listening to it, though, to further my progress; I’ve been listening back over things I’ve already read, in case I missed anything the first time round. .
I’m really pleased I’ve been reading this because I’ve been enjoying it as much as other people have. I’d heard so many good things and it’s lived up to expectations! I’ve loved the characters and the world and the story - I’ll definitely be chasing my boyfriend to read this soon! That said, I’m glad I’ve been reading this on the kindle because I haven’t had to carry it everywhere 🙊
.
I’m quite glad I chose to read this one this month because I finished The City of Brass quite early in the month and that’s really thrown me because I haven’t finished the #mythtakereads book so early before. I keep thinking they’re due to announce the next one soon, but it’s actually just me being premature 😅 but this has given me an excuse to read another book that fits with the theme of mythology and their retellings, so I can still be having a conversation with them. .
If you’re interested in fantasy books, you should check out the twitter account for the book club (@ MythTakeReads) where there's such a comprehensive list of fantasy books - I can’t stress enough how amazing Ashleigh (@afrolicthroughfiction) and Charlotte (@beigepages) have been! 💛

I’m #currentlyreading - well, rereading - The City of Brass, and I appear to be stuck in a weird loop of desperately wanting to read but then also stopping after every chapter and just ~ taking it in ~ 🤦🏻‍♀️ WHY?! I’m determined to spend some time now actually READING, but I’m so in the mood for this book! And what better than a good book, a warm drink and a snack beside? 🙌🏻.
.
This is our Myth-Take book of the month for June, the theme being Middle Eastern mythology retellings- you can join us at any point though, not just this month! I’ll be reading The Kingdom of Copper next month too so I’ll defo still be talking about them both for awhile to come 🙌🏻.
.
Do you reread books often? I don’t - though I think I have done more in the past 6-7 months than ever before 🤔

Yesterday I was considering how many fantasy books I have with a female protagonist. This is the result. I added my two mythology books because it's always been the stories of the Goddesses I've cared the most to learn. You could say it's male dominated, but where would they be without Athena's wisdom, Aphrodite's love, and Gaia the Earth herself? Most of these books I have the pleasure of looking forward to reading.

And even better, quite a lot of them fit nicely with the Myth-Take Reading Club I'm part of! Every month the hosts, Ashleigh (@afrolicthroughfiction) and Charlotte (@beigepages) choose a fantasy retelling of a mythology or fairy tale story that we all read together and discuss. It's a lot of fun and I've met great people through it! Their twitter is @ MythTakeReads. Daughter of the Forest was last month's pick and City of Brass is what we've been reading for June. Check out their Twitter and join or discord chat! I heard that they have a special announcement coming tomorrow: Friday 6/21/19 👀 (Don't mind the sticker on Son of the Shadows: it gives my copy character ☺️) Books shown:
Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Daughter Of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier
Mythology by Edith Hamilton
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Fortune Teller by Gwendolyn Womack
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
The Penguin Book of Classical Myths
Circe by Madeline Miller
Child of the Prophecy by Juliet Marillier
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

I think I lucked out with my copies of The Sevenwater Trilogy. They’re all the right size and must have come from the same print series because they match - at least they’ll good on my shelf! Also, I got them all for less than £15!
.
I haven’t had the chance to read the second book this month because I’ve had a lot of other books to read. It’s been the first month I’ve planned what books I’m going to read and I think that’s because I wanted to read some LGBT+ books this month, and these are a bit too long to fit in a month where I have a lot of other books planned. .
I’m looking forward to checking out the sequel because I want to see how it’ll wrap up the questions Daughter of the Forest left open, especially as it’ll be set years after the first. I really enjoyed the first when I read it for #mythtakereads and I know it’s a childhood favourite of a lot of people, so I have high hopes for it - I hope I’m not setting them too high!

You may have noticed my username has changed - the first step to starting the book blog I’ve been talking about for months. This time, I’ve got my boyfriend joining me on my venture, so we’ll hopefully keep each other motivated as we start!

🌿 "Where I will wander, I am certain I will decide." 🌿
Absolutely adooooored this one even though I was definitely late to the (well deserved) hype. Atmospheric, enchanting, emotional and just dark enough + it has one of the most endearing protagonists I've read about in ages. It has angst and trees so naturally I am obsessed.

I’m back from my trip to Poland! Which I don’t think I actually mentioned on here...oops. But I’m sure if you follow my personal account or my twitter, you’ll already know. Randomly, one bookish thing that came away from my trip was an intense need to read more of my Greek mythology books - the amount of palaces we visited that were inspired by classics and mythology was just incredible. And now I want all the stories! Funnily enough, while I was away I uploaded a blog post all about some of the Greek myth retellings on my TBR right now, and I *think* I might actually get to a couple of them next month! 🤞🏻 be sure to head to the link in my bio and check out my blog if you want to hear more about them! .

🤞🏻 be sure to head to the link in my bio and check out my blog if you want to hear more about them! . Thoughts & review 📖 The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty 5/5⭐️
—————————————————
I bloody loved this book and can’t wait to continue the series! I can’t believe I waited so long to read it, it’s been on my shelf for ages. Also I feel like it’s made me want to read all of the fantasy books, when I’ve planned to read other books this month, so I’m conflicted 😂. The Middle Eastern mythology and setting in this is fascinating. So thanks to #mythtakereads for inspiring me pick this up, I’m excited to join in again with next month’s theme/book (also to read last month’s book too)!
.
.
The story is a bit slow at the start because you’re getting aquatinted with the setting and magic etc. After a couple of chapters of Nahri’s perspective, Ali is introduced and the rest of the book is split between both of their perspectives. This is really interesting because they’re quite different characters and have lived very different lives, Nahri is basically a Thief from Cairo and Ali is royalty. .
.
The story is captivating, there’s lots of magic, myth and politics. The book deals a fair bit with inter family conflict and politics and cultural and racial prejudices that have been going on for thousands of years in the story. I thought that the way characters interacted with and pushed against those issues was an interesting aspect of the book. On a more general note, what happened at the end I really didn’t see coming and the hints at what’s to come next have me excited for the next book (which I need to get my hands on soon!). .
.
I’ve found it hard to summarise my thoughts on The City of Brass so hopefully this mishmash makes sense! .
.
This completes the prompt Beautiful cover for @thereadingwomen bingo challenge #rwm19 .

I just took a very long walk while listening to audio book of THE CITY OF BRASS. I am very into easy, thrilling fantasy reads currently and I am really enjoying this! I have taken a little of a mental health day, taking it easy and now I am going to curl up in bed with a bar of my new favourite chocolate and probably read THE CRUEL PRINCE which I am really hoping to finish this weekend. Have a lovely weekend everyone!

So, my loose book buying ban didn’t last for long, but I couldn’t help myself. .
I’ve been eyeing this up for ages, but I saw this signed copy in my local bookshop and couldn’t help myself. It was the only one left and it means I’m helping a local shop, right?
.
Something tells me I should hold off on reading it for a month or so, though. I feel #mythtakereads might have a Greek myth themed month in the future 👀

I’m really enjoying The City of Brass! It’s so good so far, I can’t believe it’s been sitting on my shelf for ages unread. Also I’m in love with the little chapter heading design, I think it’s so pretty.
———————————————
On a less positive note, I’m going to DNF The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami. I was hopeful about it because I liked Strange Weather in Tokyo by the Author but it’s just a bit nothing so far to be honest. It feels disjointed, basically nothing has happened and I don’t care for the characters. I was reading some reviews and it seems the general response is pretty negative of it, saying it’s Kawakami’s worst book

I started The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty a couple of days ago and I’ve been switching between the audiobook and the physical book. I’m not a big fan of the audiobook narrators voice but I’m really enjoying the book so far! I’m really liking the setting and the magic in it. I really can’t think of any fantasy I’ve ever read that involves Middle Eastern folklore so I’m really glad that I’ve been pushed to read it by joining #mythtakereads . Also how pretty is this cover? 😍 I’m kind of obsessed with it so I think it definitely must fulfil the bingo square ‘Beautiful Cover’ for the #readingwomenmonth bingo challenge.

Do you have a reading goal for this year? I thought since I just recently reached halfway in my 2019 reading goal to read 100 book, I’d post a little bookish update (that nobody asked for but you know I like to reflect, alright 😂):
☕️ I’m kind of amazed how much I’ve been reading this year, it’s a wonder what trying to pick up a book instead of watching Netflix does. I’ve nearly read as many books as I did in the whole of last year!
☕️ By reading more and reflecting on it more I feel like I’m figuring out what I like and don’t like, what I gravitate towards most and what I want to try to read more of.
☕️ I really want to read more fantasy, it’s a genre I love but tend not to reach for as much 🤷🏻‍♀️. I also want to try to read more diversely and more translated fiction. .
☕️ I’m loving discussing and review books on #bookstagram , I feel like it’s really making me reflect and think about what I read more. .
☕️ I’m so happy to be surrounded by the amazing #bookstagram community. .
☕️ I’m really liking reading challenges (currently: #readingwomenchallenge , #2020classics , and #mythtakereads ) and also last month I joined a pretty cool book club #thediversitybookclub 🤗

It’s June (aka my birthday month!) ✨! Now I’m home for summer I’m planning on reading as much as I can, so here is my start to that. Maybe a bit ambitious to begin with but I’ve been wanting to read these all for a while. Three Women is up first but am also hoping to join in on #MythTakeReads with The City of Brass! I started reading Praetorian last summer (oops) but I love ancient Roman history so I’ll do my best to finish too. I also have soooo many little black classics from @penguinukbooks that I need to read so figured I’d throw that in too! ✨Anyone in Los Angeles with an open spot for a bookstagrammer to join a book club!? I really want to get back into that too ☺️. ✨What are your June reads!? Have you read these?

I’m going to try to have a very loose book ban for the next month or so. .
I wasn’t going to do it, but I want to try and read as many books on my shelf whilst I have a sort out at home, so I’ll read the ones I won’t keep before giving them to a charity shop. .
I also bought a couple of pairs of shoes the other week, so I’m trying not to spend money elsewhere for a while 👡 .
However, I have bought a few recently. Two were cheap and were the next books in the series after Daughter of the Forest. .
The other two were The Flatshare (because it was my end of term treat and I didn’t have to pay a lot for it with my boyfriend’s discount) and City of Brass (June’s #mythtakereads book of the month). I’m a couple of chapters into both and I’m really enjoying them so far!
.
I also really want to get The Wickerlight, but, despite searching in every bookshop I’ve come across, I’ve yet to see it. I think it might be an online order!

My June TBR stack 📚 I’m excited for June, the uni semester is finishing, I have some great reads planned and I’m doing some traveling 🧳
—————————————————
I’m planning on attempting the @thereadingwomen bingo challenge for #readingwomenmonth . I’m also reading Jane Eyre for my first book of the #2020classics challenge (It started in May but I’ll catch up). For #thediversitybookclub we’re reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe this month which is exciting (but I still haven’t got my copy 🙄). I’m going to attempt to read The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty for #mythtakereads . And lastly the plan is to #buddyread The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy with the lovely @atypicalreader . So it all seems a bit ambitious but some of the books cross over so I’m hopeful I’ll get to everything! .

After reading Daughter of the Forest for #mythtakereads in May, I decided to get the second and third book secondhand and continue the series! The third hasn’t arrived yet, but this second one has and it has me excited all over again 😍 I don’t know when I’ll get round to picking it up since - as I established on my last post - I’m *awful* at continuing series. But at the minute I’m aiming for July (June is full of travelling so this wouldn’t be fab at the mo)...fingers crossed! .
Do you binge read series or take a...slower approach, like I do? 😆

The #mythtakereads book of the month for May was Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier. Honestly, I think they’re on a roll with their choices because I’ve really liked both so far.
I’ll be honest, I was initially daunted by the page count, with each chapter being about fifty pages. Reading it coincided with writing essays, so I was just reading it when I got the chance, which meant that I read all the slow bits over a longer amount of time. By the time it was exciting, I had time to dedicate to it. And, if you check my Twitter, I sped through the final through chapters!
That said, I 100% understand why some people said it was slow. The big events only really happened in the last three or four chapters.
This book should come with a massive trigger warning for rape. Marillier, I think, handled it really well. It haunts Sorcha and every relationship she has for the rest of the book. However, after spending so long on the rape, it was a shame that a sex scene that meant so much to Sorcha was just brushed over.
It felt like there were an awful lot of questions left unanswered, even after 650+ pages, but fortunately I’ve already bought the next ones 😅 I’ve got high hopes for them!

Also, I’m pretty sure I’m not related to Oonagh, the evil stepmother, but who can sure with hair like mine? 👩🏻‍🦰 #readdotf #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #reading #irishfolklore #irishmythology #daughteroftheforest #bookaholic #book #books #read #europeanfolklore #bookworm #booklover #bookish #bookblogging #bookreview #bookblogger #bookreviewer #redhair

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 stars!

This is one of my favorite books I've read so far this year. This book was the May Myth-Take Reads Book Club book of the month. If you are interested in reading fantasy novels based on fairy tales and mythology from all cultures, I recommend checking out the group on Twitter @ MythTakeReads
Daughter of the Forest is a fantasy retelling of the Six Swans fairytale and follows the protagonist Sorcha. She is the youngest of seven children. Set on a task by the Fae to undo a curse on her brothers, she starts a long, isolating, and painful path. Sorcha reminds me of Joan of Arc with her conviction and strength. The Celtic atmosphere is just beautiful and the story gripped me. Big trigger warning for rape, but I believe the author wrote the aftermath of it very well.
This is the first book of the Sevenwaters Trilogy and I've already bought the next two! I highly recommend this book if you love classic female lead fantasy novels! #MythTakeReads #bookstagram

Do you like mythology, folk tales and fairytales? I’m a big fan of them, here’s some of the collections I own. I really want to read some of these in their entirety, I’ve only ever read a few stories here and there. I especially want to read the Grimm brothers fairytale collection and the Norse myths. I’d love any recommendations for myth/fairytale collections I should check out and any retellings too 😊(also btw please excuse the crazy glare on my glasses 😂)

On the topic of myths I’ve started watching @afrolicthroughfiction videos and I’ve come across #mythtakereads and I’m keen to read along each month (or at least note them down for when I’m on my summer uni break!) .

So y’know how I’m always saying how bad I am at finishing series? Here’s proof - if I just read these 5 books, I would finish 5 series 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 Hopefully I’ll start making some headway soon - I’m #currentlyreading The Amber Spyglass, and will soon be rereading The City of Brass for #MythTakeReads before moving finally onto The Kingdom of Copper! Fingers crossed that the others will soon follow 🙈 Is anyone else awful at finishing series? I don’t even know why I do it! .

🍃 "This lake and this forest are places where strange things come to pass, where the unexpected is commonplace. [...] underneath, here and there, the magic runs as deep and as strong as in the days when the Fair Folk came out west" 🌿

I've been having a think and I'm going to skip this months #mythtakereads book as I don't feel up to some of the content I've seen trigger warnings for. I'll probably get round to reading Daughter of the Forest at some point when I'm in a better headspace but not right now.
However I have picked up some other retellings of European folklore (specifically English) during this month. These are three books that put women (and in two cases queer characters) front and centre in traditionally straight male dominated narratives:
Once and Future - King Arthur
Sherwood - Robin Hood
Priory - St George and the Dragon.
Are there any others you would recommend?

Today I am suffering badly with my hayfever.
So I am reading on my lunch break.
I am still making my way through Daughter of the Forest by #julietmarillier for the #mythtakereads #readdotf
I am enjoying it more now.
Do you read during your lunch at work?

Had two very exciting packages come through the post recently! The gorgeous Greek mythology notebooks are by @hollydunndesign and the Juliet Mariellier book is Irish mythology-inspired fantasy, bought so I can join in #mythtakereads 😁

“Perhaps this is what the stories meant when they called somebody heartsick. Your heart and your stomach and your whole insides felt hollow and empty and aching.” — Juliet Marillier, Daughter of the Forest
.
.
Hi everyone!
.
I’m currently reading Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier and while I’m not really far into it (like... 20 pages in 😅), I’m so excited to finally discover more of this author’s works! All I know is that Daughter of the Forest is a retelling of the Six Swans and it’s influenced by Irish folklore. .
I read Dreamer’s Pool by the same author last summer and I really liked it, but I have yet to continue the series. Well, I really wanted to discover Daughter of the Forest first, I feel like it’s so many people’s favourite of her works and #MythTakeReads was the perfect excuse to finally dive into it!
.
Have you read any of Juliet Marillier’s works and which ones would you recommend? Which author’s works would you like to read more of?

This time in two days, I’ll be finished 😬 well, hopefully the essay will be finished today and tomorrow will be for editing 🤞

I’m taking full advantage of the sunshine and sitting in the park after a few hours inside, for a change of scenery. My days at the moment are currently split between three projects, but I am finding time to squeeze in a bit of reading as well - which is pretty unusual for me at this time of the year, no matter how much I normally want to read!

Soooooo getting to the point I'll be starting the #mythtakereads read tonight if I'm not too tired.

My new book arrived, in absolute PERFECT timing!! I ordered Daughter of the Forest a little while back as it’s our #MythTakeReads book of my month for May - and here, on May 1st, it was popped right through my letterbox exactly when needed 🙌🏻 A retelling of Grimms’ The Six Swans fairy tale and also heavily influenced by Irish folklore, @beigepages and I just *had* to make this our Myth-Take book for May, with the theme of European folklore! This book seems to have had a bit of a revival lately and I’ve been eager to get to it, so I’m excited to see what everyone else thinks too 🙌🏻 If you want to read this book along with us in May, be sure to use the hashtag #ReadDotF and/or #MythTakeReads so we can see your updates! We’d love to have you ☺️

I was #gifted this manuscript by @bloomsburypublishing as part of an event promoting @stonemadonna’s new book and I cannot WAIT to jump into this after loving The Wren Hunt!
This also fits perfectly with May’s #mythtakereads theme of European myths and fairy tales, as it’s again set in Ireland. I’ll also be reading Daughter of the Forest in May for this theme (follow #ReadDotF for updates) and there will be not one but TWO reading vlogs this month🙌🏻

I was quite pleased when @afrolicthroughfiction said I could definitely read The Bloody Chamber with #mythtakereads in mind because it’s made me approach the book with a lot more enthusiasm than I might have done if I was just reading it for class. At very least, it’s encouraged me to write notes, which I might always do for class alone 🙊
