Let me tell you kids about my "ugly" shirt. Circa 1997, I bought this Liz Claiborne shirt at a thrift sale because I thought it was just so cool and it was super cheap. I loved it's flap pockets and high neck stand that gave it a vaguely military feel, and I loved its loud, colorful floral print. Mind you, I was in my super goth phase at the time, but I still just couldn't pass up this shirt. I wore it to school the next week, and I felt so snazzy. I had come up with a cute coord that involved my 14 eyelet Dr.Martens and a velvet blazer, and I rolled up at school with confidence in spades. As soon as my best friend saw me, she said it was the ugliest shirt she had ever seen. Her opinion would not be swayed. Then, for the rest of the day, other kids told me what an ugly shirt I was wearing. Even so, my resolve that this was one cool shirt was not shaken! However, I was given such a hard time about it, that I only wore it rarely. But I still wore it though because sucks to those haters!! I've worn this shirt from time to time over the years, and I still think it's really cool. Every time I've done a clothing cull, I've never been able to give it away. Last year, when I moved houses, I almost gave it up because it didn't fit, but I still just couldn't. Now, I've lost some weight, and this shirt fits again, so I'm wearing it. It goes so well with my blue hair that I think high school me would be super proud. She'd appreciate that I'm still rocking the Docs with it too. As a side note, I included a photo with my coat and scarf because, once again, I have found that this scarf magically matches everything. While I was out, some dude said "Hey Miss Lalaloopsy" when he addressed me, and I basically internally squeed because I love those funny little dolls so much. So the moral here is to never turn away from something you truly love just because other people say it's ugly. 22 years later, a stranger might give you one of the best compliments you could have asked for even if you're not sure he meant it that way.
