Watching the original after the remake just makes me feel embarrassed for Disney. Yes, they made a semi-watchable remake that clearly many have enjoyed, but instead of switching up the story to be unique and interesting they went for a FULL remake, give or take some scene tweaking that end up being worse than before anyway?? Right, what the fuck was the point in all of that? Money you say… Ah yes, Disney, biggest bank account but the smallest balls… But anyway, this is about Aladdin, a movie that came out when Disney made good movies. Back when they weren’t making ten remakes and fifty sequels a year. Back when they made original content that they didn’t steal from previous works…
Aladdin is an animated musical film based on the Arabic folktale ‘Aladdin’ that’s part of a larger collection of folktales called ‘A Thousand and One Nights’, which Disney borrow from again with their third Aladdin movie, Aladdin and the King of Thieves. Very much original content… But yeah, what do I really need to say here, we all know how exciting and brilliant this film is. There’s a large number of unforgettably timeless and catchy songs, accompanied by beautifully detailed, colourful and iconic animation and the hilarious voiced performance from Robin Williams. It’s all great. The story follows three different themed narratives; a man finding his place in the world whilst being true to himself, a generic but natural love story between two forbidden lovers and a classic good vs evil brawl of magic and mayhem. We’ve seen these stories all before but who really cares, the perfect character design, superb voice-acting and the pure sense of drama turn these familiar stories into an amalgamation of utter entertainment and joy!
This film may be incredibly loud with its thick layers of sound effects, music and voices, but that is what’s to be expected from such a fast-paced, exhilarating ride such as this animation. Every scene there is something going on. A song. A dance. A crazy complex action-sequence involving the genie being fucking magic that probably took 40 years to animate. This film is non-fuckin-stop and it’s wonderful. (continued->)
