As an athlete, the focus of each training session should always be to improve sport-specific skills, which results in overall better sport performance, also referred to as Characters of Athleticism as a collective.

To break this down, there are four elements to base a Strength and Conditioning program: strength, speed, power, agility and mobility. On top of this, mobility, drills, team cohesion and psychological strategies make a strong athlete.

Strength: “the ability to carry out work against a resistance. Strength is the maximal force you can apply against a load “. It enables an athlete to withstand force, build a protective ‘armor’ around the body to prevent injuries and to overall improve the musculoskeletal structure. Building strength requires taking the body out of its comfort zone by utilizing high resistance over a low rep/high weight approach.

Speed: “the rate at which someone or something moves or operates or is able to move or operate “. To effectively focus on speed, bodyweight exercises and drills work best. Not utilizing any weights (as that focuses on building power to generate speed, not speed itself), the body needs to rely on heightened neuromuscular connection to manage coordination, balance and reduce reactive response time. -
Power: “the ability to exert a maximal force in as short a time as possible, as in accelerating, jumping and throwing implements”. Improving the athlete’s ability to generate power translates to quicker change of direction, quicker max speed acceleration, both crucial elements of beating an opponent on the pitch in team sports such as football, rugby and hockey.

Agility: “Agility is the ability to move and change direction and position of the body quickly and effectively while under control”. In many sports, an outstanding level of agility is the key to outmanoeuvring opponents on the pitch or manoeuvring the body through a set of obstacles without drop of speed. -
Thoroughly focus on all of the above sport-specific skills to help accelerate your performance during play.

So I’ve had a few messages about problems you are finding with your get ups. Without seeing videos it’s hard to see exactly what’s going on but here are 3 common problems that people seem to be having. There’s plenty more (trust me, I’ve made most of them at some point!) Hope they help! 💪🏼😁🥰

2nd video - As with anything, a lot of problems start with breathing incorrectly. Notice how I take a deep breath and my diaphragm blows up like a balloon. I then imagine I’m crushing that air in to a cube (pressurising core) for a strong start ✅ On the second part of the clip I show what sucking my stomach in looks like. My spine goes in to flexion and the whole move looks #notverypretty 🥴❌

3rd video - Same position, different issue. Notice how I drive through the foot of the bent leg, I’m using my glute to initiate the roll. I then roll towards my straight leg, keeping my chest open ✅ Notice what happens if I lift my foot. I crunch up, it’s not stable and there’s no control ❌ The first bit is a roll, not a sit up. I’m actively trying to drive through the heel, not crunch up using my abs. •

4th video - The lunge. Sometimes people complain of back pain in this position. Notice the position of my spine when I fully extend my hip by squeezing the glute (bum) of the back leg. It lines me up for a solid lunge and makes me more stable ✅ When I don’t do that, notice the position of my spine and how I don’t look ‘tight’ or stable 😬❌ Comes back to my favourite saying.. always squeeze your bum and you won’t go far wrong (in get ups or in life 🤪) #toptips 🍑💪🏼😍

MOVEMENT. It’s one of the most simple and NATURAL things we can do to slow down the aging process, to not only reduce but REVERSE illness in the body, and to maintain good mental + physical health (according to Dr Dean and Anne Ornish). Just a simple 30 minute walk a day is all you need. But if you can’t find time for that- where can you add just a little bit more movement to your day? Park further away from the grocery store. Commit to ALWAYS taking the stairs. Mow the lawn. Take the dog for a 10 minute walk to start your morning. It’s the little things that make a difference! 
The less we move, the more fidgety we are. We can’t sit still. Our mind has no choice but to run because our body has not. We lie in bed at night and find ourselves completely restless. BUT the more you move, the more you can relax. The deeper the movement, the deeper the state of relaxation. The more you expend your physical energy during the day, the more your mind will be able to settle and rest at night. Move well. Sleep well. Be well. 🙏🏼💘

🆒Granted, this is definitely A more advanced way to do your pikes. Put your feet in a TRX band and at the top of the movement move one leg to the side while keeping your balance.

✅You can do pikes on the TRX band if you want. Or you can also do them on a ball or furniture sliders. The big thing is that you want to make sure that you’re moving through your abs.
