There was vast injustice and suffering to undo and prevent before the pandemic; now there are so many new or exacerbated issues. In the U.S., the CARES Act has passed, containing some very important measures, like significantly expanded unemployment benefits (thanks to Bernie Sanders), and funding for airline employee payroll and benefits (thanks to worker organizing by the flight attendant union!) and the ability for the federal government to take equity stakes in airlines that accept gov money - and bad measures, like the largest portion of the funding which is basically a slush fund available to big businesses - another bailout only for the richest. The $1,200 check for individuals making less than $75,000, plus $500 for each child, is something, but for many that isn't even enough to fully cover one month's rent…
Some of the major steps that can be taken to protect people which are not addressed by this legislation include those I represented here: A moratorium on rent, mortgage payments, and utility shut-offs during the pandemic; the freeing of imprisoned people from jails, prisons, and immigrant detention centers to prevent the ravaging of those people in high-risk settings by the coronavirus; on a related note, the construction of sanitary, safe emergency shelters; Medicare for all so that everyone has full coverage of any health issues, and no one will be sunk into medical debt- it’s the medical model that will keep everyone safest; and using the Defense Production Act to produce much needed medical equipment such as proper masks, gloves, and ventilators.
Things you can do for these (and related) causes:
-Contact your local city council, sheriff, and prosecutor's offices by phone and email. You can google The Justice Collaborative Covid 19 for useful factsheets for talking points. Focus should be on urging the release of as many people as possible from jails, prisons, and detention centers because of the urgent need to reduce concentration that prevents social distancing and adequate hygiene (enough soap and sanitizer, access to showering and handwashing). This can be done by arresting less people [continued in comments]
