Yesterday was a field trip into Udupi for visits to ancient temples, a little shopping, and amazing south Indian food. Udupi is home of the famous Dosa, which is like a thick tortilla or an enormous savory crepe.
It was a delight to be in the care of my 'sister from another mister' Jaima and to have the family of her long-time driver Ashok join us. His wife Purnima is a true lady and little Bhandavya was sooo adorable! We got to visit the family home nestled amid verdant rice paddies and even said hello to the family cow.
We stopped at stunning new #Durga
temple (Shree Chandika Durgaparameahwara) and paid our respects at Anegudde Ganapathy temple on the way. The countryside is so lush. We also passed several old brick and tile factories. It was also scenic, it's very difficult to choose which pictures to include!
Our destination was the #Udupi
Sree Krishna Temple complex, which is a cluster of temples and schools (seminaries or "mutt") that has an ancient Krishna temple and pond (kund) at the heart.
Jaima had connections with one of the priests at the #Krishna #temple
, so we were able to skip the lines. We also visited the Shri #Anantheshwara
Temple and Shri #Chandramouleeshwara
The physical buildings and the statues themselves are quite beautiful, and the #patina
of age is distinctive. Everywhere you turn is a feast for the eyes.
But it's very difficult to convey the depth of #culture
that permeates such an ancient temple and the vicinity around it. The little rituals that everyone seems to know and the way people treat these sacred spaces and one another. 🌴
