📚 Book Review 📚
📖
I think a lot of people have fallen in love with this gorgeous book cover, including me!
📖
I loved "Classical Studies" (thanks Mr Smith!) when I was at secondary school. The stories were amazing full of adventure with the Greek and Roman gods.
📖
So I was really looking forward to this book. I've still to read Mythos by Stephen Fry as well. It didn't quite reach my expectations. There were a lot of people on IG who loved it and it did have that beautiful cover.... 😏
📖
In a lot of societies, the birth of a daughter is not celebrated as much as a son and this also applies to the Titans.
📖
Circe's father, Helios and her mother, Perse, were a god and a naiad respectively. Also there's a lot of complicated relationships in the book... Perse is Helios' cousin's granddaughter...
📖
From the start, the establishing of who is who, their relationships and how they're connected was a tad confusing at times and I had to keep referring back to previous passages. However, I enjoyed the story from Circe's point of view.
📖
Her parents would definitely NOT get Parents of the Year award, as well! Circe knows she isn't their favourite child and she doesn't seem to fit in with her family.
📖
She doesn't appear to have powers initially but then discovers she is a powerful witch. She's banished to an island and among other things, enjoys (?) turning men into pigs...
📖
As a descendant from a god, she lived for centuries and comes across many humans, some of them she falls in love with.
📖 4⭐

Are you into Greek mythology ?
I find it so interesting and also funny at times. Many stories are pretty ridiculous and weird.
.
.
Who is your favorite Greek God?
I like many. I can’t really choose. But I really appreciate Hestia.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4/5) Circe by Madeline Miller
*****
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island where she grows stronger. But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods.
*****
Greek mythology without a doubt is one of my favourite forms of mythology to read. The gods and goddesses with their complex relationships and mortal shortcomings never fail to amuse me. This book in particular tells the story of Circe, a goddess and daughter of Helios the Titan of light. Circe has always struggled with her identity and is never quite content being just a God. Throughout the book we follow her journey as she struggles with love, exile and motherhood. Madeline miller writes painfully and we as the reader relate to Circe’s heartbreak and loneliness. Despite being a goddess Circe struggles with mortal emotions and she marvels at how delicate but strong humans are and how they can weather the roughest of storms. In some parts of this book, the stories are told are told by other characters instead of the reader experiencing them naturally, this was slightly frustrating as it felt like the author was switching between narrative styles. Honestly though, I am nit-picking. This story is filled with fantasy, terror and heartache and I would highly recommend you reading this!

Spev o Achillovi💛
Ak vás láka alebo zbožňujete grécku mytológiu, tento román by ste si mali prečítať. Autorka ho písala desať rokov. Ako inšpiráciu použila svoju milovanú Homérovu Illiadu. Patrokla, Achillovho najlepšieho priateľa, zvolila za rozprávača.
V centre diania stojí smrteľník Achilles, syn morskej nymfy Tetidy a kráľa Pelea. Najlepší a najkrajší bojovník vtedajších čias.
A čítali ste Kirké?

Wow wow wow 😍 It took me quite some time nearly a few months to finally finish #thesongofachilles not due to the writing but due to I didn’t have the time. Omg I haven’t had a book make me cry as much as this one in a long time. The last week and a half, saw me finish this book and tonight #circe (another that I just couldn’t put down)
So much credit to the author, not only did she bring back my love for stories of mythology, she brought back my passion for reading and writing. #feelinginspired #mythology #godsandgoddesses #titans #books #anotherrealm #lovetoread #lovetowrite #myfavouriteescapeplace #madelinemiller

Circe by Madeline Miller ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I think it's important to either like mythology or be open to liking mythology to enjoy this book. I like it more than I thought I did.

Circe is so very human despite being a nymph goddess. In her faults, mistakes, weaknesses, guilt and gluttony. Also human in her capacity to love, share compassion, wit and inner strength. She could be grit and power when brought to task. I loved her story and felt she got the ending she most deserved.

"He showed me his scars, and in return he let me pretend that I had none." - Circe/Madeline Miller

CIRCE is another book highlight of the year! It made me crave for a lonely island where nobody will find me. Where I am on my own. Have my own little space where I can be my truest self.

This book is very slow-paced. Which was a problem for me at first. Because I am not used to it. I always read books that are fast-paced. I need a thrilling story that lets my heart beat fast. You know what I mean? But as I read further I fell in love with Circe and her story.

If you haven't pick it up yet, let me tell: go to the nearest book store, buy it, run home, make yourself cosy with tea or hot chocolate and don't leave this spot until you finished Circe. And then cry with me about the end. Because it's heartbreaking.

Have you read this one? This is the December selection of @goodwitchbookclub. I didn’t know anything about it except that I’d seen it on bestseller lists, but I started it last night and thoroughly enjoyed what I read. There’s still time to join the #bookclub; we don’t start discussing it until 12/29!

Athena pt 3
•
The young goddess stood side by side with her father during the Battle of the Giants, where she managed to overcome Enceladus, casting him down and throwing the whole of Sicily on top of him to paralyze him. Although she was the goddess of war, she was not warlike. Clever and wise, she helped heroes such as Perseus, Achillies and Odysseus.

Clever and wise, she helped heroes such as Perseus, Achillies and Odysseus. • • Let me know your thoughts in the comments below ⬇️ • Follow @_godznkingz_ for daily mythology posts ⚔️ • • • #godznkingz #greekmyth #odyeuss #olympians #greekgods #greekgodess #minoan #greekart #ancientgreek #ancientgreece #odyssey #homer #gods #cerberus #mythsandlegends #folktale #mythical #greekmythology #mythology #demigods #knossos #hellenic #hellenistic #fantasycreature #yggdrasil #perseus #theseus #madelinemiller #charon #greekgods

🗺My favorite show at the moment is The Watchmen on HBO... it’s based on a comic book and is so utterly unique in characters, style and genre! Every episode just blows my mind and I just can’t wait for the final episode of the first season next Sunday 🤯

🗺For #mapmonday I’m showing off some beautiful maps from a few of my favorite reads this year.
✨The Island if Aiaia where Circe was banished
✨1922 Moscow and the Metropol Hotel - the setting of A Gentleman in Moscow

. “...but in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.” 💫
My fiftieth book of the year. I did it, I hit my goodreads goal. I am so pleased. It was a tough one this year, I really struggled with my reading and in all honesty, I have not been in a good headspace the majority of the year to really enjoy reading but I made it.
A quick review of Circe: Madeline Miller’s writing blows my mind. It is incredible. Throughly enjoyed this book, maybe not as much as Song of Achilles but it still deserved the five stars. Please, please pick it up. One thing I’ve learned from reading Madeline Miller’s books is I need to read more books involving Greek Mythology, I always find it so interesting so if anybody has any recommendations that would be fab.

Ok, wow! I’ve heard so many good things about this book but I was hesitant, wasn’t sure I’d get into Greek mythology but I’m loving it. So well written, and Circe is one of the few gods/goddesses that is likeable, though similarly spurned and exiled she is quite different to Hel of Norse myth of whom I am reading to my son at the moment. This one is highly recommended #greekmythology #circe #madelinemiller #books #bookstagram #reading

Athena pt 2
•
Zeus responded by swallowing Metis, but by that time Athena was ready to be born. Zeus then ordered Prometheus to lay open his head with an axe. All were amazed to see Athena spring fully-armed from Zeus’ head, brandishing her spear.

Book 90. I enjoyed this a lot. I thought it would be more of a character study but there's actually a lot of plot. It's particularly episodic for the first half as various gods and mortals visit Circe's island. There's a lot more in it than just Odysseus and there were quite a few names I recognised like Athena, Icarus, Hermes and Jason. Generally though I wasn't familiar with most of the myths mentioned so it was interesting looking them up afterwards and reading about the different versions.

[Circe - Madeline Miller] I would almost consider “Circe” a grown-up feminist Percy Jackson. I love how Miller recasts Circe as a fully fleshed heroine (rather than one-dimensional evil sorceress) and that her retelling connects a multitude of famous myths— from Prometheus to The Odyssey— through the perspective of the little-thought-of yet ever-present immortal witch. Following that logic, it is a long one but absolutely worth the read - M

REPOST: @withrepost • @alexandriathegreat__ Letting go of the unrealistic version of what I “should” be doing. Bringing a whole lot more of what I WANT to be doing. 💗 A huge piece of me that I lost in the journey of becoming a mother was reading. I disconnected from myself so much that something that brought me so much joy in the past left me feeling almost like a fraud. Whew. Glad that shits over. I gotta say though...I fucking love fiction. Adventure stories. Fantasy. Other worlds. That’s the shit that makes me feel alive. And for a while there I thought that wasn’t a good thing. Like I should be too evolved to read science fiction. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ That being said, I’m going into this new read pretty blind, but I’m excited to dive in since it’s been on my list for a while. It seems divine timing had it show up for me as the first book for @goodwitchbookclub so I couldn’t possibly deny it. Coming back to what I love again feels really fucking good. I dare you to try it. ✨ #goodwitchbookclub #bookclub #bookstgram #reading #currentlyreading #circe #madelinemiller #book #booklover #nowreading

KIRKE |  Madeline Miller
•
bajky, pověsti, fantasy
•
ve spolupráci s @o2_cz
•

IT IS MY QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY TODAY! @bookthoughtswithkels IS OFFICIALLY TWENTY-ONE! AND SHE HAS TO WORK TEN HOURS TODAY! THIS IS NOT OKAY! PLEASE GIVE HER TONS OF LOVE TODAY!!! ❄️
Kels, I love you! We may not remember how we met, but we have amazing memories we’ve made since (see third picture for a reminder of our most awkward but entertaining physical meeting in the church gym)! I may not be able to take you out for a drink after work today (because you’re currently seventeen and a half hours away from me), so here is a somewhat serious picture of my cuddling Circe, a book of Greek Mythology, and my book containing The Iliad and The Odyssey, followed by me almost dropping said books. ❄️

I’ve decided that, over the next few days/weeks, I am going to share books I’ve read from 2010-2019 that have deeply impacted me.
.
First up is Circe by @madeline.e.miller - this book was suggested to me by @frogmellaink and my Tomb Raider friend Stella and I am eternally thankful for their rec of this book. Not only did it get me through one of the most difficult times of my life, I also found myself resonating with Circe in a way I seldom do with female characters. I usually relate to male characters more (that blessed INTJ thing) but Circe was instantly someone I related to for many reasons.
.
I started the year off reading this story. I finished it in the hospital as I read by Elliott’s bedside. I am now finishing the year off by rereading it. It really has bookended 2019.

“This is the grief that makes our kind choose to be stones and trees rather than flesh.” I read the first half of Madeline Miller’s Circe when I returned from Greece, and the second half this weekend, missing the Greek climate even more. The novel is a rare and stunning thing, its narrative full of desolation and anger but driven ultimately by an insistent, inherent hope in goodness and possibility. This fierce narrative is an extension of the novel’s eponymous protagonist, a character so well fleshed out that her endless existence and the growth she undergrows is perfectly communicated through what a novel that could hardly be called epic-in-length. Miller’s knack for condensing history and action to the most succinct and still meaningful is an impressive gift not to be underestimated, and her reflections on the ancient truths of the world, facts of life that apply no less to us now than to figures like Medea and Odysseus, stopped me in my tracks more than a few times. Miller’s construction of Penelope and her impossible bind spoke to me (a known Penelope sympathiser) very deeply. Above all I was struck by the overall tone of the novel, something so quiet but undeniable, this feeling of anguish and loneliness, a bewilderment at the cruel and unforgiving gods and world. It is this “grief” that Miller writes of that haunts story and reader most of all.

📚Wrap up di Novembre.⁣
⁣
Per me.. davvero importanti.♥️
⁣

Circe è intimamente legata a noi, come umanità.

Circe è intimamente legata a noi, come umanità.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exhumed to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper—despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel seas goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing if the years that follow will test everything they hold dear. •
HOW TO ENTER:

Ozanlar benden, erkek kahramanın karşısında diz çöküp merhamet dilenen bir kadın olarak bahsetti hep; ilaç katarmışım tatlı şaraplarına, büyüleyip domuza çevirirmişim hızlı giden gemilerin tayfasını , babaevini unutturur, sılaya kavuşmalarına müsade etmezmişim. I RATED: 💟💟💟💟💟
GENRE: Greek Mythology / Fantasy
PUBLISHED: 2018
•••
“The grudges of gods are as deathless as their flesh.”
•••
The character of Cersei in Game of Thrones was somewhat inspired by this Greek Mythological titan “Circe”, daughter of Helios (the God of Sun). Those familiar with the ‘Odyssey’ will know that after the Trojan Wars she is infamous for turning Odysseus men into pigs when she encounters them on her island.

This novel however is a feminist retelling of Homer’s epic poetry. A different portrayal of her than the one found in historical prose & renaissance paintings.
In Miller’s version we experience the myth from Circe’s perspective. She is more than a witch, more than a seductress, more than a character with exotic hair; she is complex!
We find her insecure, scorned, banished & soon understand her need to defend herself & to develop her craft. We attach human emotions to her & empathize when she raises her child as a single parent.
I found the book a page-turner & liked the first person prose. She meets Deadlus, Icarus, Medea & many other nymphs, Gods & mortals. In the book we also see her featured in the tale of the Minotaur.

The feud between Circe & the mighty Olympian Athena made for a riveting read & provided a satisfying end to the story.
The novel certainly made me want to re-visit Greece & explore islands like Crete that I could not the first time.

Audio books are all about the narrator, not sure I would have found this book as compelling if I'd just read it but the narrator did a stellar job.
Satisfying feminist retelling of Cerci, witch of Aeaea.

Where is Christmas? How come is it still two weeks away 😭 I want to finally get the Christmas tree and feel all of festive instead of studying 🙈 also, if you haven’t read any Madeline Miller books, you definitely should! ❤️ ‘Song of Achilles’ is one of my all time favourites, and I really enjoyed ‘Circe’ too (even though it was a bit slower than SOA, but I still loved it) 🙈

#cuddleupwithdecember - You’re a Mean One Mrs Grinch: grumpy character - I’m gonna go with Circe on that one 😂
#mapmonday - one of my favourite maps ever!

In den Shorties heute:
- “In The Woods” von Tana French.
.
- “The Song of Achilles” von Madeline Miller.
.
Wer’s genauer wissen will, guckt auf meinen Blog:

I finished listening to The Song of Achilles on #overdrive yesterday, and it was an excellent audio book! It’s about Achilles, told from the point of view of Patroclus. I read the Iliad back in college and I remember liking it but getting tired by all the “this guy fought this guy and killed this guy and this guy killed this guy” going on. I feel like Song of Achilles hit all the same major plot points but without all the repetitious battle scenes. And man, does it make some compelling characters out of Achilles and Patroclus. I didn’t like it quite as much as Circe by Madeline Miller, but still, an excellent read, especially if you like Greek mythology.

Finally finished #Circe by #madelinemiller and I freakin l o v e d it. I love Greek myth anyway, but I think this might be one of the best versions of the greek gods and the world they ruled over I've ever read. Beautiful but terrible. And I love this interpretation of Circe.
But seriously, does anyone want to start a Stop being dicks to Circe club? Anybody?

Hello, my lovelies 💕
QOTD: Were there any books this year that disappointed you?
•
I have to sadly answer that question with ‚yes‘. There were several books where I didn’t get what I expected.
•
‚King of Scars‘ by Leigh Bardugo wasn’t a bad book, I still gave it 4 Stars, but that was mainly because I still love the characters so much. Nina‘s and Nikolai‘s storylines disappointed me, Zoya was the only one who shined in this one and something happened at the end that overshadowed the rest of the book and I still don’t know how to feel about it. I will still read the second book though.
•
So many people raved on my twitter timeline about how good ‚The Young Elites‘ by Marie Lu is, but after reading it, I realized that the main character wasn’t ruthless enough for me and constantly let other people take advantage of her, it frustrated me completely. I even gave the second book a chance, but ended up dnf‘ing it.
•
‚Circe‘ by Madeline Miller disappointed me because it’s one of those ‚we follow the person for a part of their life‘ stories where not enough exciting things happened. I heard so many good things about it and the author‘s other book, but it wasn’t for me.
•
I hope you all have a great Sunday ☺️

Le chant d’Achille - Madeline Miller
•

Sheltering from the rain is the next #bookfairiesunwrapped book hiding outside Shipley Library. Did you pick it up today? 📖🧚‍♀️ 🎄💚 🎄💚 🎄💚 🎄💚 About the book: In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

How is it Sunday already?! Why can't the weekend last a bit longer?
Do you like books inspired by Greek mythology? I enjoyed the couple I read so far, but I wouldn't call it my favorite theme. Mythos was very funny, and The Silence of the Girls I still haven't read, but I heard great things. I really liked The Secret History (which is not a retelling, but mentiones Greek mythology quite a lot) and the 2 books by Madeline Miller.

But lets talk about something else than books today.
Q: Tell me about something you love, anything!
A: I love musicals! Hamilton is one of my favorite, I have around 20 songs on my phon, and am constantly listening to them. If you don't know about it, have you been living under a rock? Go listen to it now!! Last month I discovered the Six, a West End musical about the six wives of Henry VIII, and it is so good! Also love & Juliet, another West End musical in which Juliet decides she doesn't want to kill herself at the end of Romeo and Juliet, and it goes from there. I just wish they had original music, bit it's still fun. Now I just need enough money to go and see them live, so maybe in 10 years? Hamilton I know I'll probably never see because Broadway is crazy expensive, but one can hope. There is lots more, but I don't feel like writing about all of them.

“But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.”

"Hiçlik boşluktur, havaysa başka her şeyi doldurur.
Bunun üzerine denizin derinliklerindeki kadim bir tanrı seslendi;
Öyleyse çocuğum, başka bir dünya yap."
