Don't know much about Circe from Homer's Odyssey but she sounds like a bad a**. Apparently she was a Witch/Goddess with the power of mind control who likes to drink, turned men into swines and female rivals into sea monsters 🤭🤷‍♀️🐗🤣🧜‍♀️

QOTD: What are some of your favorite stories in mythology? Or what are some of your favorite books based in mythology?⁣
⁣
I'm a big fan of The Aeneid and the story of Romulus and Remus. I have family in Rome, so Ancient Roman mythology and history has always fascinated me. As for books based in mythology, I will always be partial to Rick Riordan's books because I credit him for my love of reading. ⁣
⁣
I have been hearing a lot about Circe from other bookstagrammers recently, so I can't wait to get around to this one! ⁣

First we have #circe by @madeline.e.miller #madelinemiller as this is my current read and I’ve been loving itttt!! Then I thought it was worth featuring #codenamevillanelle by #lukejennings as I’ve been loving #killingeveseason2 rn! (May have binge watched half the series in one evening!!) Finally thought I’d share #murdermostunladylike by @redbreastedbird #robinstevens because I’m SOOO excited for the next instalment, Top Marks For Murder, coming out on August 8th. I’ve raved about these books before but I honestly can’t wait to add the next book to my collection as soon as I can!!
I tag @georgia_books and @my.bookworm.life to share their week in books! - Angelika xo

♡ Hello bookish people ♡
What is your favorite book to movie adaptation? I think I've developed a bit of an obsession for To All The Boys I've Loved Before. I've read the books too, which were okay, though I think the first movie changed a few things around so they aren't exactly like in the book. I liked the movie more than the book anyway, in the book I found Lara Jean really annoying and whiny. I'm curious how the next movies will be like. ☆

It's hot, right? Disconcertingly so. But this has made me think about summer reads I've loved spending lazy days & warm evenings reading.⁣
⁣
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘴 sprung to mind, I devoured it in a day a few summers ago and it always makes me think of this time of year.⁣
⁣
By Madeline Miller (who also wrote the much-acclaimed and also brilliant, 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘦), it's her version of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘥 that focuses on the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. I couldn't put it down!⁣
⁣
Any other addictive summer reads you can recommend? •⁣

Puissante, libre, amoureuse...

i’m back! wow it’s been too long. i think the last time i posted was in april! i’ve just been really unmotivated to read anything. but i finally bought a kindle so now i’m finally motivated to read, lol.

it took me a while, but i finished circe last week. it was my first intro into greek mythology so i had no idea who circe was, or some of the gods. in that way it was quite refreshing because everything was new to me. but overall, i thought the book was good. it was definitely a little too slow for me in the beginning but it got better near the end. the book is well written and i can feel circe’s struggle with being immortal. i could sympathize with her situation. overall, i gave the book 3.5 / 5 stars

QOTD: is there a book you read lately that fits this quote? For me it’s probably most recently Madeline Miller’s books, The Song of Achilles and Circe. I may not have literally carried them around everywhere, but I had them—their language, characters, stories— in my head for days. I hear the audio versions are exceptional, as well. What about you?

Hej! Dedal stał utalentowanym rzemieślnikiem o szorstkich dłoniach i pięknej duszy, a Odyseusz mądrym, walecznym lecz pozbawionym miłosierdzia, wyniszczonym wojną przywódcą.
"Wysoko konstelacje opadają i krążą.

One of my most buzzed about books this year that I had mixed feelings about reading ...
-
I feel like lately my reading patterns have changed a lot, mostly bc I’ve been receiving new contemporary fiction from a few publishers. I used to read a lot more classics and modern classics and I feel like that’s rly dropped off bc of obligations I have to read book mail. And the feeling I should be reading what’s trending right now.
-
I’m not complaining but I do think it’s kind of odd that what’s always been my favourite hobby is kind of becoming a more planned and organized ‘job’ with commitments and time lines. I also am far more immersed in the literary scene and am far more aware of what’s popular than I was a few years ago, which also definitely impacts what I decide to read.
-
One thing I am excited about is starting my PhD in the fall bc I think it’ll rly put me back into a mode of reading more historic, critically acclaimed works alongside newer works. I also think I can adjust to being more selective. It’s so hard when you get offered books or can get them to say no!
-
Do you think having a book social media account has changed how you read? How do you feel about it?

And the feeling I should be reading what’s trending right now. - I’m not complaining but I do think it’s kind of odd that what’s always been my favourite hobby is kind of becoming a more planned and organized ‘job’ with commitments and time lines. I also am far more immersed in the literary scene and am far more aware of what’s popular than I was a few years ago, which also definitely impacts what I decide to read. - One thing I am excited about is starting my PhD in the fall bc I think it’ll rly put me back into a mode of reading more historic, critically acclaimed works alongside newer works. I also think I can adjust to being more selective. It’s so hard when you get offered books or can get them to say no! - Do you think having a book social media account has changed how you read? How do you feel about it? - #circe - #madelinemiller

#circe #madelinemiller .
There were moments of awkwardness, but overall this is a beautiful book. Despite the main character being immortal and having grown up surrounded by gods, Circe is entranced by humanity. Through generations she comes to defy expectation and tradition, and learns that even perfection is flawed. .
In some ways, it reminded me of #anitadiamant #theredtent, taking a story often told from a patriarchal perspective and focusing on the women instead.
Highly recommend.

I'm currently reading Circe and I'm really enjoying it. It's been a while since I had so much time to read for fun and I couldn't be happier about it.

Struck my Achilles pose and dug out some 🔵&🔶 to match my book/helmet: THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller for @thereadingrush photo challenge #rrbookoutfit ! .
.
.
I’ve been reading this novel on & off since I visited Denver, and luckily found it on a kindle deal so I could keep reading after my library hold expired. I’m in LOVE with sad lil exiled Patroclus and his growing feelings for his best friend, Achilles. This book runs at a slower pace, which is why I keep putting it down: I want to savor it! (Is this normal book reading behavior?!) .

Last 100 or so pages to go 🎉

It's such a slow read but the story is so good, I feel like I've been at it for weeks 😂. Circe is such a loveable character. Greek mythology is a favourite of mine, always has been so I'm always keen to read adaptations of the Greek Myths and this was done so well but there was something missing or I just couldn't connect with the book properly.

Circe is left on an island herself as she discovers her powers she becomes even more powerful and a threat to the gods. I loved the Minotaur, its one of my favourites along with Icarus.
An epic tale of love and loss Madeline Miller transforms an ancient tale that resonates with the contemporary audience.
I look forward to reading The Song of Achilles in the near future.
QOTD If you could transport yourself anywhere in the world where would you go?

AOTD This is a though one I have so many bucket list destinations but I would probably go for the pyramids in Egypt.

Niestety do czasu.

Circe

Rp. 30.000

🇬🇷 TOGA PARTY 🇬🇷
.
To celebrate finishing The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, Cooper dawned his toga and is ready to hit up Greek Street and party!!
.
Quick Plot Summary: The story of the most badass Greek warrior, Achilles, and his role in the Trojan War, told from the perspective of his bestie and companion Patroclus.
.
Review: This book lived up to the hype! At it’s core, it was a beautiful story about the power of friendship, love, and the consequences of ones choices (especially when one’s pride is involved). Miller expertly weaves a passionate love story into a 10 year war, full of violence. .
Miller’s writing style is *perfection* and kept me engaged throughout the story. I loved all the mythology and seeing Greek characters I was familiar with pop in and out of the story. Id say this is a top ten book of the year for sure! I’m glad @throwbookclub choose this book for their July read!
.
Q: Were you involved in Greek life in college? I’m a Delta Gamma and my husband was is a FIJI!

I got home from camp a few days ago, and I'm still not over it. I legit loved everyone there so much even though we'd known each other for 5 days :'). We also had a crying session in the corner of a room some time before we left, think of it as an orgy, but no clothes off and lots of tears.

My mood reader ass changed all my reading plans to start this one. 100% sure I'll love it. Maybe not as much as The Song of Achilles aka the best book of all time. (I can't make these things up..🤷🏻‍♀️) Oh and also, I'm taking pictures with my phone again because I actually like them better that way. -

(I can't make these things up..🤷🏻‍♀️) Oh and also, I'm taking pictures with my phone again because I actually like them better that way. - 🌙 - #reading #lire #books #bookstagram #book #bookish #bookworm #bookaholic #reader #booklover #livrestagram #reader #read #reading #readingtime📖 #lire #livre #bookphotography #booklover #bookclub #bookishlove #bookishpost #readerlife #lovereading #readergram #readerofinstagram #readerofig #circe #madelinemiller
QOTD: What’s your favourite book to movie/ tv-show adaption?
AOTD: I really love the A Series of Unfortunate Events TV-Show (actually more than the books) 😂
~
🇬🇧: And that was I with my vacation time for the month 😂 We‘re heading home now and then it’s right back to work. At least I did some good reading. I managed to finally finish An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (only took me like 2 weeks 🙈) and got started on These Rebel Waves. Slowly getting back on track 💁🏻‍♀️

"Patroclus. A voice like music, above me. I look up and see a man leaning on the walls as if sunning[...]He is piercingly beautiful, smooth skin and a finely cut face that glows with something more than human[...]Apollo.
He smiles, as if this was all he had wanted, my recognition."

Normally I wait for the paperback to come out (poor student woot woot) but couldn’t for this one (got it for Christmas eyy). Absolutely love Miller’s writing style (and Greek myths) so this was an absolutely delightful read (the dust jacket, cloth covering and end papers are also all beautiful so that’s an added bonus) #circe #songofachilles #madelinemiller #bookstagram #book #bookworm #hardback #bloomsburypublishing

Chiron had said once that nations were the most foolish of mortal inventions. “No man is worth more than another, wherever he is from.”
“But what if he is your friend?” Achilles had asked him, feet kicked up on the wall of the rose-quartz cave. “Or your brother? Should you treat him the same as a stranger?”
“You ask a question that philosophers argue over,” Chiron had said. “He is worth more to you, perhaps. But the stranger is someone else’s friend and brother. So which life is more important?”
-The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
--------------
This book is just damn beautiful. The character designs, their developments, their thoughts etc... are described brilliantly. The plot is easy to understand, and some of them are accurate according the real myth. Miller has amazing talent. I feel so much. .
The story is written in Patroclus' perspective. Patroclus is not an epic hero, but Achilles is. Patroclus is an “ordinary” people, not a demigod. But he has more power than he thinks, and the moments where he reaches out to others and offers what he could do have great impact. .
The problem is that I wanted to finish this book, but I didn't want to finish this book. Reading few last pages, everything hurts and I'm dying.
Actually I'm not sure about the romantic relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, since it was common to have a sidekick among ancient soldiers. .

I threw myself into Ancient Greece again, and there it was, that feeling when you are deep in an intricately created world, rapidly turning pages.

You know that feeling? The one you used to access effortlessly as a young reader?

You might remember how after reading Circe I was convinced Madeline Miller was literary sorceress. Before I had even turned the last page I had added The Song of Achilles ‘to basket’. It was a desperate effort to manage my withdrawal.

The Song of Achilles did not disappoint, and if possible, I think I loved it even more.

The story is a retelling of the events in The Illiad, but through the lens of the quiet love story between Achilles and Patroclus. A relationship that grows from being childhood companions to a deeper devotion. Miller does not shy away from the nature of their relationship as many have done in the retelling of Achilles’ story. After all, it is grief and rage at the death of Patroclus that launches Achilles back into the Trojan war, spears blazing.

That wasn’t really a spoiler.
But like so many other stories that you might know the ending of, the magic is in the telling of the why and how.

My WIP update: retyping my edits onto a computer is so boring😫 I’ve been at it for 3 days and I’ve only typed up 5 whole pages. I thought this was going to be the easiest part of the editing process!! In lighter news I’ve started my first draft of a new story and so far things are going well. I’ve written almost 6000 words so far! Updates on that WIP will come soon🌸✨💖

THIS is what happens when I get a new pen: I end up “testing” it by writing the names of my main characters 😂 Got a wee bit carried away with this one from The Pen Pen (https://the-pen-pen.myshopify.com), because it’s rose gold, (my ‘power’ color), and it has a very gel-like smoothness that I dig. I’m soooo particular about my writing utensils. While of course, I type, I do most my brainstorming long hand, since there’s just something about putting pen to paper that helps me think.

Also, I’m TERRIBLE at drawing owls. Yes, that weird looking thing under the crown is SUPPOSED to be an owl 😂

I am finally getting around to reviewing, Circe. I think I just wanted to keep it to myself for a while, as I just totally and utterly loved this book!💖 And I really could just leave it there, but I just wanted to tell you that I just loved every single page of this novel, and I completely love Circe; she is my new hero! 🥰
☀️
Circe is composed of the most beautiful, lyrical and poetic prose, making for a reading experience which was relaxed, unhurried and languorous. Ultimately, Circe, is about a woman who discovers her own power. Through abandonment, rejection, exile, and violent sexual assault, Circe uncovers her talent for transformation, for revealing the ugly truth inside, be it within ordinary people or omnipotent beings.
☀️
The descriptions of the world of Greek gods and goddesses are vivid and alive. Madeline Miller has written a mesmerising narrative bringing ancient myth to meet modern realities, without losing any of the sense of the other worldly. Miller weaves together the familiar tales of Ariadne, Medea, Jason, Odysseus, Penelope, while the legend of the Minotaur, as the horror lurking beneath the surface of power, never felt so apparent and so relevant. Circe also stands as a woman who is not afraid to confront her own monstrous creations; a powerful and satisfying narrative in itself!
There is a reason why we still live in a culture embedded with ancient myths, these stories still resonate and are still brilliant!
☀️
Inspired by, Circe, I headed to the British Museum. I photographed Circe with pottery from Troy and Mycenae, jewellery of Minoan Crete origin, and the beautiful architecture of the museum. The fourth picture is of an Athenian 'krater' depicting an early representation of myth, believed to be either Theseus fleeing Crete with Ariadne, or Paris abducting Helen. I love how the ancient Greeks told stories on their pots! 💛
.
The irony of being in the British Museum as a place of beauty and history, founded on colonialism and propped up by BP, was not lost on me either. #artwashing

“I hope that Hector kills you." The breath rasps in his throat. "Do you think I do not hope the same?" he asks.

Guess who stayed up way to late last night to get her heart broken by Achilles and Patroclus 💔💔💔
I read this a few years ago and it became one of my favorite books. The audiobook was a lovely experience and I highly recommend it.
⠀⠀
Today is also #bookmusicmonday and of course, I’ve got some Halsey for you. For Achilles and Patroclus I’ve chosen Young God:
🎶 🎶 🎶
If there's a light at the end, it's just the sun in your eyes
I know you wanna go to heaven, but you're human tonight
. . .
But do you feel like a young god?
You know the two of us are just young gods
And we'll be flying through the streets with the people underneath
And they're running, running, running
🎶 🎶 🎶
⠀⠀
Reading challenges (tbh I’m kinda cheating with this book):
🏰 #medievalathon this puts me up to 5 books and a princess ranking. And even though I read this on audio, the paperback is almost 400 pages so I’m counting it to get my leggings (thick paperback)

Madeline Miller is now one of my all time favourite authors because I insanely loved both her books. Circe is the retelling of the Greek myth from Circe's own point of view and the circumstances that forced her into exile and trapped on an island. In the myths she's portrayed as a heartless witch but here she is human and flawed and wonderful and resonant and the writing style is so breathtakingly beautiful, perfect for this story. The plot is fast paced and will leave you rooting for Circe as she fights to be her own powerful self in a world where men and divinities are afraid of her. Highly recommend this book even if you're not interested in Greek Mythology! .

Highly recommend this book even if you're not interested in Greek Mythology! . . . . . . . . . . . #madelinemiller #circe #book #books #recommendations #retelling #mythology #greekmythology #bookreview #booklover #bookishlove #fortheloveofreading #bookstagram #bookgram #bookgrammer #bookaddict #bookworm #booksofinstagram #instabooks #bookblogger #karachiblogger #pakistanblogger #bookblog #reading #photoshopexpress #review #bookreview #instapic #dailyinsta #theslowdowncollective
📚Kirke - Madeline Miller

Moja ocena 8/10 👍

/!\ VERY LONG POST WARNING /!\
/!\ ATTENTION POST TRÈS LONG /!\
(oopsy doopsy) (English part in the comments)

Bookshop discovery + mini book haul (E.) : 🇫🇷🇬🇧
ATLANTIS BOOKS, Oia, Santorini, Greece

[suite en commentaire / English version in the comments]

Puissante, libre, amoureuse...».

Reading this book, I realize each Greek mythology figures have their own story to tell. Circe is just one of those amazing figures who always fight her way back up even if she was pushed on the brink of her limit.

CIRCE by Madeline Miller bookclub meeting hosted by @chrislyndrell. Circe was exiled to an island where she practiced magic in her garden. Lisa brought the garden to her home. We ate yummy Mediterranean food and of course the wine was flowing. We ate, drank and had great bookclub discussion while making our own personalized terranium. 🌱
