Hong Kong extradition bill: Protesters return to streets despite suspension

Hundreds of thousands of people are protesting in Hong Kong against a controversial extradition bill, despite the bill having been suspended.

The densely-packed crowds are demanding that the bill - which would allow extradition from Hong Kong to mainland China - be completely scrapped.

The region's leader, Carrie Lam, on Sunday apologised for causing "disputes in society" over the bill.

A day earlier she delayed the bill plans after mass protests this week.

Many protesters, who fear increased Chinese influence over Hong Kong, are calling on Ms Lam to resign over the unrest.

What's the latest?

The protests have so far remained peaceful, in contrast to the previous major demonstration on Wednesday which saw clashes between protesters and police that injured dozens.

By early Sunday afternoon, large crowds had gathered in the city's Victoria Square, many wearing black or carrying white flowers. Organisers said they hoped more than a million people would attend, though no formal estimates of the crowd have yet been made

We have the right to express our disagreement to our government. This is what democracy is about. There is nothing to do with foreigners. Communist will never understand and should never teach us what to do. Not for another 28 years at least.

Thanks and proud for all of you!
If you are going the North Point Station, please transfer in Tiu Keng Leng Station rather than Yau Tong Station as Yau Tong is too crowded rn.
Please go one level up in Tiu Keng Leng Station for transferring.
Thank you. ——
I went through Tiu Keng Leng Station .
And my best friend and his colleagues went through HK Station

I've had Hong Kong very much in my thoughts for the last few days since mass protest has broken out (rightfully so) about the newly proposed Extradition Bill... My heart goes out to you, Hong Kong citizens. Mainland China is a frightening place, and you must fight with everything you have. STRENGTH STRENGTH STRENGTH

There are massive protests going on in Hong Kong right now. What at first started as peaceful protests have recently turned violent. Local police have started using tear gas and rubber bullets to detain crowds. Protesting citizens have started throwing bricks, rocks and are using forceful means to get their point across.
.
- 🔥
Why the protests, you might ask? It basically has to do with a new bill that legal authorities are trying to pass that will allow Hong Kong citizens in certain instances to be extradited to mainland China. This also can include Ex-pats.

Since China has regained full ownership and rule over Hong Kong at the turn of the century, Hong Kong has still remained a free territory. However, any Hong Kong citizens claim that their rights and freedoms are slowly fading. Artists and writers express a sense of control and censorship over what they can and cannot say. They feel as though they don’t have as much expressive/creative freedom as they once did.
.
-🔥
Most Hong Kong People Don’t Really Considered Themselves the Same as Mainland Chinese People. Most are ethnic Chinese but the majority of them don’t identify as Chinese – with some young activists even calling for Hong Kong’s independence from China.
.
-🔥
A recent survey of students from the University of Hong Kong identified more as being “Hong Kongers” vs. calling themselves “Chinese.”
.
-🔥
In another more broad 2017 survey among HK citizens ages 18-29 indicated that only 3% identify themselves as being “Chinese.”
.
-🔥
There are in fact significant legal, social and cultural differences among those who think of themselves as “Hong Kongers” vs. identifying themselves as the same as those from mainland China.

Way back in the day, Hong Kong belonged to the British. Ok maybe not that long ago. But up until the year 2000, this was the case. Hong Kong under British rule for more than 150 years. This dates back to the 1842 where Britain defeated China in the Opium Wars. As part of a peace deal, China gave up Hong Kong to the British making it a British colony. This peace making deal was a major part of the Treaty of Nanking. Later, China also leased the rest of Hong Kong – the New Territories – to the British for 99 years after.
.
-🔥
The terms of the Treaty of Nanking were set to expire at the turn of the century. That’s when Britain gave up rule over Hong Kong and gave it back to China. Under British rule, you can imagine what 150+ years of influence will do to a country. Or maybe you can’t.
.
-🔥
The British do not have a written constitution that is made up of common law. Instead, they are believed to have a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. Nevertheless, what the people have taken away from over a century of British rule are ideals about freedom and democracy. They have implemented laws, culture, etc. during their rule over Hong Kong and this has very much become a way of life for Hong Kong citizens. So much that it’s been passed on over generations and generations and become synonymous in a way with “being Chinese”. At least in their opinion.
.
-🔥
So since the Treaty of Nanking was signed, Hong Kong was a free territory under British rule. It developed and still has its own legal systems, laws, borders, and set of rights for each of its citizens, including the right to free speech.
.
-🔥
This is very different from mainland China, where they do not have the same set of laws, legal system and rights for each of its citizens.

“Hong Kong will just become another Chinese city if this bill is passed,” one 18-year-old protester told sources.
.
-🔥
According to BBC News, Hong Kong government under Carrie Lam has proposed amendments to the extradition laws that would allow extradition requests from authorities in mainland China, Taiwan and Macau for suspects accused of criminal wrongdoing such as murder and rape. The requests would be decided on a case-by-case basis. But many Hong Kong citizens feel that many could be extradited for reasons outside of just “criminal wrongdoings.”
.
-🔥
The move came after a 19-year-old Hong Kong man allegedly murdered his 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend while they were holidaying in Taiwan together in February last year. The man fled to Hong Kong and could not be extradited to Taiwan because the two do not have an extradition treaty.
.
-🔥
People in Hong Kong are worried that should the extradition bill pass, it would bring Hong Kong more decisively under China’s control. Critics of the bill, including lawyers and rights groups, also say China’s justice system is marred by allegations of torture, forced confessions and arbitrary detentions. But Ms. Lam’s government says the amendments are required to plug loopholes in the law that effectively make Hong Kong a haven for those wanted on the mainland. She has also said there will be legally binding human rights safeguards.
.
-🔥
Hong Kong has entered into extradition agreements with 20 countries, including the UK and the US, but an agreement with China has never been reached.

【Hong Kongese : Please help Hong Kong, again. 】 *it will affect YOU who just come to Hong Kong for visiting and transiting as well*

On 9 June 2019, over one million people in Hong Kong took to the street to tell the HKSAR government, the PRC government as well as the world that they oppose China extradition law . If this law is passed, 1-Country-2-Systems will officially be dead and people of all nationality who live or pass through Hong Kong can be legally extradited to China where justice system is well known to be flawed.

Depiste the largest protest in recent Hong Kong history, the HKSAR government refused to listen to the people, and announced the 2nd reading of the law will take place as scheduled on 12 June.
People once again took to the street on a work day, largely peacefully to occupy the area outside of the Central Government Offices and Legislative Council. Until the police fire pepper spray, tear gas, bean bag rounds and rubber bullets at the protesters in the afternoon to disperse the tends of thousands of people.

Multiple protesters and journalists are injured. Some of them suffer serious injuries – some protester was shot in the eye, and the face Videos show that the police aimed at the head when firing their rubber bullets, like playing the video game. Those police office sir were encouraged by their superiors to celebrate and chant for firing tear gas at unarmed protesters – and the superiors said that it is an HONOUR to do that.and our police officer even trying to pull out a female protester underwear informed of the public.
