[The Turning Point] Why the heck should we care about your story?
Tea time 🍵
What I mean is, when does the plot of your story actually begin?
Aka - inciting incident
I hear people say it should kick in at around the first 15% mark. But once again it's subjective to each person's writing style. However, I do believe having it within the first 100 pages (depending on the end page count of your book) is a good place to have it.
Usually readers give a book the first 100-150 pages to see if anything much catches their interest.
It's basically the part where you introduce the main conflict, raise some stakes, and give your reader A REASON TO CARE. If there are no stakes, emotional or physical, how do you expect to create conflict? If weaving in these stakes, gradually, or sudden as all heck (such as an unexpected death) comes naturally to you, then your story is probably already rife with conflict - great!
If not, consider raising the stakes 🥩. This is what it can do for your story:
¬ Builds tension. Readers love tension! It keeps the pages flipping.
¬ Creates conflict. They've got something to lose, arguments arise, opinions are spat, people suddenly have motive 🙇♀
¬ It intrigues the reader!
¬ It interests the reader!!
¬ It makes the reader care! Because that MC you're still lukewarm about suddenly grows a backbone and takes action.
¬ CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Sometimes having to face a difficult situation, emotionally or physically, or both, where you've got something to lose, you might end up just changing your outlook on a few things, such as > what is most important to you? This all helps developing a character.
I've run into a few novels where by the end I realize nothing's actually happened until the final boss fight...
When did the plot actually thicken?
Character development wHoo?
Climax resolution whAt??
Plot cohesion wheRe?
I totally understand if a story is character focused, that's a whole different topic. But right now, the turning point is where it's at.
Your thoughts dear reader? if you've come this far 😉✨
