The June of 1984 was an unusually tumultuous time.Operation Blue Star commenced on June 1st, just a day prior to the birthday of the man who formed the nexus of the Khalistani movement, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He will soon be shot dead on June 6th. The events which wrecked havoc on the Darbar Sahib where the Indian army along with its tanks entered on to fight the opposing factions of Sikhs demanding a separate Sikh state marks the birth of the powerful ripple that would change the destiny of India. It was the events in June that led to the Assassination of Prime minister Indira Gandhi, the subsequent Sikh pogrom and charged changes that succeed in altering India’s nucleus.
The army were given orders to enter the complex of the Darbar Sahib by the top brass. The Indian army Prepared itself for a combat unaware of the power that lay behind the walls. What they came face to face as they entered were not amateur gunmen, but automated rocket launchers, expert gunmen and a brilliantly planned assault .
As The army launched a full assault, tanks were called in and the fighting went on for a week. Many civilians were killed. Some army men. Finally, Bhindranwale was shot dead on and within the next 2 days, the fighting ceased. Damage had been done. The debacle of attacking the Darbar Sahib was the biggest and most damaging fiasco . The akal Takht was all but destroyed. Blood, dead bodies and the stench of hatred made the breathing air foul. The Sikh faith had been wronged by the government.
One can’t decide if Bhindranwale was a saint, A martyr or a terrorist. Different opinions exist. But what one can be sure of is that the attack on the Golden temple was a sacrilege beyond comprehension and the operation was one of the worst decisions made by any government Anywhere in the World.
Today we moan those innocents who lost their lives and the horrible attack on the souls of the Sikhs and the temple. Sikhs today remain not just the backbone of the Panjab, but of India. May never again shall we witness 1984. May the peace of the Panjab and it’s mother country India be forever maintained.
