I spy. Birb.
(If you don’t care ignore this) I actually have gotten asked a fair amount of times what it’s like to own a dove. Sooo... here’s her daily care and a little dove care information.
In the morning, feed their chop; fresh food like veggies and fruit, grains, sprouted seeds, herbs etc.
A little later in the day the seed or pellets are fed. A supplement should be given - either in their water or food.
Cage liner is changed weekly and spot cleaning takes place a few times a week.
Water is changed daily. I give it in a glass cake pan type thing so she can bathe (which has many benefits).
Doves should have outside cage time. I aim for three hours daily. At least. Unless they’re in an outdoor aviary. This should happen in a safe and secure places, no chemicals like cleaners and soaps etc, unsafe foods, other pets, windows, heat sources like fire places or ovens... pretty much examine everything and make sure it’s totally safe.
In my opinion doves day night cycle should follow the natural light outside, which means covering the cage or turning out the lights as it becomes dark outside. This ensures they can get enough sleep :)
Inside the cage there should be flat perches and textured perches, toys, foraging items, floor space, somewhere to bathe and try to replicate aspects of the natural environment when you can.
Doves are calm animals, they’re so beautiful and interesting to observe. They’re also not super costly, but as with any animal you will need to have money available for perches, toys, cages and quality food. They aren’t the same as parrots in the sense that they aren’t easily trained, aren’t as playful and active and may not be as cuddly as some parrots - although every dove has its own personality. They’re easily hand tamed, which is why I think they are good to interact with children (as long as the kid knows how to behave around animals) as opposed to some parrots who may bite or screech.
Doves make quite a mess while moulting but obviously aren’t going to be destructive like parrots. And their cute little cooing noises are soft and gentle 🥰
