It’s a wrap! Today we @beyondthebillion launched our partnership with @Mastercard along with our esteemed panel of #capitalallocators I so respect 🥳 2LPs and 2GPs in the hot seat addressing: funding innovation in a time of crisis!
One thing is clear, we cannot backslide into old patterns of decision-making that exclude women. Now more than ever we have the opportunity to drive returns through #diversity.
THANK YOU to our great team that have made all of this possible! @shellyporges @natalieposton @amberahliao @julieguaan @kachan123

I taught a lunchtime virtual salsa lesson to KPMG employees yesterday & because it was hard for ME to pull myself out of my own own grief (let alone help anyone else feel happy) all morning, I decided to start the class by checking in with everyone to see how they were feeling around the state of America right now. I’m glad I did. People were visibly impacted by both this pandemic & the (what feels like) nonstop murders of Black people.

I’ve been in too many meetings (in-person and via Zoom) where leaders just start the session without even acknowledging that racial traumas matter, too. The “art of the check-in” should not only include general “how is everyone feeling?” questions... and now, asking how your colleagues & their loved ones are holding up... but also having real-talk discussions about racial traumas.

Fortunately, #salsa #music & #dance helped put us in better spirits yesterday because I needed that energetic shift, too. Since I conduct research on white supremacy in organizations, there is no escaping the rage and fear that is embroiled in my research (lit review & the data I’ve collected) except through music and dance.

If your son, daughter, transgender, or gender non-conforming child was Black, would “all lives” matter to you? And, let’s be clear: Black people (of all genders) aren’t being murdered because they’re Black. They’re being murdered because of white supremacy.

How are YOU leading through these crises? And, how are you showing up as an ally?

With the series finale tonight, we offer OLD GUY to you as food for thought -- to begin discussions about #ageism, to get involved, and to voice why we need #inclusion and #diversity of #representation in media. In 2017 the global skin lightening industry was worth $4.8 billion and is estimated to grow to a crazy $8.8 billion by 2027.
•

In a number of African countries, between 25 and 80% of women use skin whitening products. In Asia this number is around 40% and in India over half of skin care products are sold to whiten skin.

Children are a great reminder that love is unconditional until we learn to put conditions on it.
They remind us that there is hope for the future and that our jobs as parents are SO important to that future.

My boys are Hispanic. And they don’t really even know what that means. We are far more American-ized than generations before us, who came from Mexico. And while I want them to take pride in where they came from, I so badly wish that I could bottle up their innocence and keep them unaware of race until it no longer is an issue for world. To continue viewing the world as they do.

But, my job isn’t to protect them from the world. It’s to prepare them for it.

To raise sons who are aware of race.
Who are proud of their own heritage.
That are apart of diverse groups of friends.
Who are comfortable with any race being welcomed into our family.
That see people in God’s image and not mans.
Who love people. Period.

But it won’t happen by reading them some books and buying them multicolored crayons (although, those are great starts to introducing diversity. We will be increasing this more!) It will start with teaching them to love their neighbor as themselves. Sounds simple, but it’s one of the greatest commandments given by Jesus himself in Matthew 22, because he knew we needed to be commanded to do so. He knew it was something we would have to choose to do.

I don’t want to imagine a world where they lose a friend to any kind of hate crime, or worse, themselves. I also don’t want to raise the kind of people that condone it or stay silent about it.

We’ve got to do better. Our kids are counting on us.

National Reconciliation (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

🏳️‍🌈🎉A WIN FOR THE LGBTI+ COMMUNITY!

Virginia is taking an amazing step by creating a employee non-discrimination policy that will make it illegal to discriminate on the bases of gender identity and sexuality.

This is an amazing achievement for the LGBT+ community as people are repeatedly fired, demoted or underplayed because of their identity and who they love.

If an employee is a victim of discrimination at the hands of their employers, they can take the company to court. °

This topic may make you feel a bit uncomfortable, and because I AM the "Brown" in BROWN SUGAR...THIS needs to be said.
⠀
Over the past several weeks, I have been carrying a heavy weight. It has been screaming across the news and a loud sound of battle cries, that is only getting LOUDER. A cry and a burden that PEOPLE OF COLOUR have carrying for centeries.😥⠀
⠀
My heart hurts not only as a woman of colour, but as a mother and a wife who has to pray harder and hold on to my faith with a tighter grip than I have ever had to, in my entire life.
⠀
Today, I need to ask you favour.🙏🏽 If what you've been seeing on the news regarding race and unfair treatment of any kind, has you grieving, and you want to do something about it, here's how:⠀
⠀
DO NOT stand for racial/ cultural microaggressions, and derogatory comments spoken about ANYONE... Speak up against it!⠀
⠀
If your friends and or family members are speaking in a way that doesn't not sit right with you, SAY SOMETHING! Even if it's a joke...don't laugh, and watch how quick they are to apologize or shut it down. (Trust me it works)⠀
⠀
If your client is referring to ANYONE as "THOSE PEOPLE" or making statements such as " You Know how they are." Speak up! (Yes, this can be uncomfortable), but I am confident that you'll educate your clients in a loving way, letting them know that you're setting a standard. *Remember you are your own HR manager.😉⠀
⠀
I challenge you to own your truth and speak it, because your silence is NOT golden at this point...It's confirmation to the hate that has just been spoken in the place of your peace.⠀
⠀
We all have the power to set the world in the right direction. Our words have power, our words can be filled with hate or love. The choice is up to us.⠀

"Diversity is not a thing you do, it’s an output you achieve" ~ @teaelleu from @the.design.conference 2019

This statement is apt in the midst of Reconciliation Week. While businesses love buzzwords like diversity and inclusiveness, it often turns to tokenism when they expect diversity to fit within their ideals and expectations. Where as true outputs of diversity happen when businesses move fluidly to adjust to the diverse, and not sign up to, or expect the traditional work place structure. This is how we get the best from people.

This is my repost of the visionary activist and musician Gil Scot Heron in protest to the heinous act perpetrated against George Floyd. It’s my way to say if you are unaccepting of people based on their race, sexual preference, lifestyle, or gender I am inviting you to please unfollow me. My page & art is about acceptance and inclusion and there’s no place here for bigoted hatred. For those who stay I am honored and touched to have your caring soul in my life #blacklivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #acceptance #love #diversity #diversityandinclusion #livewithacceptance

I want to talk about what it means to be a LIONESS during this time of racial crisis.

We’ve been told all of our lives to admire the “King of the Jungle”, but if you take a moment to study the inner workings of a lion pride, you’ll soon see that its most impressive members are the lionesses.

See, the females in a pride work and act as an organized unit to keep the pride safe, hunt for food, and raise the pride’s cubs. Only TOGETHER can they provide, survive, and thrive.

We as humans MUST do the same.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of white Minneapolis police...

It’s terrible, unacceptable, and a long list of other adjectives. But the one adjective it is not, is shocking — because these atrocities committed regularly on black Americans are nothing new.

And those of us lionesses who consider ourselves white allies, CAN NOT stand idly by. It is NOT ENOUGH to repost or share stories on social media, voicing our support into the ether of the internet. It is still important to do so, but it is not enough.

We must follow up on our alliance with ACTION. We must be hand-in-hand on the front lines with our fellow POC lionesses, defending our black population.

I know it’s just a starting point, but here are three ways you can take action and support your POC brothers and sisters today:

1. Follow @grassrootslaw and call their hotline number (612-324-4499) to speak to officials with the power to arrest and charge Floyd’s murderers.

2. Make an effort to have the tough race conversations with other white people in your social circles.

3. Show financial support by donating to anti-white supremacy organizations or shopping at black-owned businesses in your area (try searching @officialblackwallstreet). (📸: @healing_photographer)

This verse has been on my heart a lot in the last few days and weeks with too many tragedies taking place. ⠀
⠀
I’ve never spoken up on this before, because I’ve always been cognizant of the reality that I truly don’t know what racial oppression is like and never will. It is a disgusting reality, but I have and will always have a privilege that my sisters and brothers of different races don’t share. ⠀
⠀
But enough is enough.⠀
I’m sick of what’s been going on. ⠀
⠀
I’m also reminding myself that although today through social media and news outlets we are visually seeing this racial oppression in front of us and it seems like these occurrences are happening more and more, that ISN’T true. ⠀
⠀
The reality is that this has been happening for far too long. ⠀
⠀
I’ve thought a lot about how Jesus would have responded to these lives being taken. ⠀
I’m reminded that the heart of his ministry was challenging those oppressors who believed only certain people were worthy of the Kingdom. The heart of his ministry was LOVE PERIOD. For ALL people, REGARDLESS OF RACE. ⠀
⠀
Jesus stood up for the people that society did not give the same opportunities too. ⠀
So today, I do what little I can to stand up and say this has to end, and it begins with the awareness that it has been going on far too long. ⠀
⠀
Those who have lost their lives due to this tragedy DESERVE to have their names spoken and remembered. So today I stand with: ⠀
⠀
George Floyd ⠀
Ahmaud Arbery⠀
Breonna Taylor ⠀
And countless others who deserved SO much more.

How you can support the @mvmnt4blklives and people rising up across the country right now, from Minneapolis to Louisville and Los Angeles to Tallahassee.

Police have killed not only George Floyd, but several others in just the past month. At a time when Black communities are disproportionately affected by COVID-19, the police are choosing to kill as they always have rather than de-escalate and stay home.
Swipe for LINKS to support and pages. Art on cover by @artedkar.
1. Get informed:
Read our caste x anti-blackness popular education on @southasians4blacklives and look out for an upcoming curriculum.
2. Get prepared and reduce harm:
Protests are a hotspot for surveillance.
Read up on how to prepare at @frontlinemedics.
Always wear a mask and gloves.

3. Create art & protest poems, join protests online and offline safely,
share calls to action and demands for accountability-- defunding the US police is critical.

4. Donate supplies to people protesting and to BIPOC led organizations who have been
mobilizing in the region.

As a brown woman, I’m accustomed to being silenced and/or dismissed, my opinions disregarded, and my experiences challenged or disbelieved. Though many racialized women, like myself, experience this personally among family members, our identities continue to be minimized and erased in schools, workplaces, government policies, and broader societal systems. .

Even taking up space isn’t easy. The internalization of the dismissive gendered socialization can lead to feelings of guilt and low self esteem. There is also a fear of being challenged, silenced, or even killed, which leads to remaining silent. Once we take up space, it’s another battle to be heard and acknowledged - forget being accepted or accredited. The pressure can be debilitating at times.
.

People love talking about the marginalization of communities but not talking to the communities; they love talking about the oppression of brown women, but not to brown women about our experiences of oppression; they love talking about policies that can solve problems but not to the populations who suffer the consequences of those problems. Racialized women exist, but how often does our existence inform decisions? It’s not enough to have space if we can’t meaningfully engage within it. Visibility for brown women and other women of colour is imperative for equality

In many South Asian communities, from the rural regions of Bangladesh to the diaspora settled in Canada, mental health issues and talking about mental health is very stigmatized
.

People who share their experiences with mental illness in the South Asian community are usually dismissed, silenced, and/or punished, especially women and members of the 2SLGBTQQIA community. Often, if a woman voices her traumas and mental illness with family members or with her community, she is ostracized and blamed for her condition. She is labeled “crazy” and unfit for marriage (this may not matter to the woman, but she is being stripped of a gender role by a culture that attributes it to her worth as a human being) .

The name of this piece, “In Therapy” is used to illustrate a state of being. A state of healing brought on by being able to finally self-validate our own experiences and struggles with trauma and mental illness in the way we want to. Not the way our parents, elders, or culture taught us to. This freedom is important to our individual identity, we can take ownership of our mental state and express ourselves whichever way and with whomever we want
.

This in itself is the breakthrough, the AHA! moment, the epiphany that many of us wait for our whole lives, but not all of us have the privilege to experience. Access to spaces, knowledge of practices, and communities that support mental health wellness is limited for women in rural regions/low-income neighbourhoods/minimum-wage jobs/certain ethnic communities/2SLGBTQQIA community/jobs that do not offer benefits/etc. The ability to speak to our experiences freely is a gift

We cannot expect women to work so hard on themselves, their careers, families, and communities without expecting the same, if not more, of institutions. Structural inequalities create and uphold the marginalization of women, especially racialized, Indigenous, and newcomer women
.

The gender pay gap in Ontario is 29%. This gap is larger for racialized women, Indigenous women, immigrant women who make 42%, 43%, and 34%, respectively of what non-racialized, non-Indigenous, and non-immigrant men earn .

The gaps also exist between women. For example, non-racialized, non-Indigenous, and non-immigrant women earn more on average than racialized, Indigenous, and immigrant women
.

Research also shows the linkages between economic stressors and violence against women. Women without financial resources are more vulnerable to gender-based violence
.

The burden of recovery from structural inequality usually falls on the people and communities it impacts. It’s either survival or struggle. The pay gap has decreased largely due to the advocacy, activism, and lobbying by BIPOC feminists and women’s organizations. Same goes for raising awareness about and preventing violence against women. Institutions and systems must be held responsible and accountable to improving the status of women .

When we engage women and young girls about developing a healthy sense of self, we must discuss the systems that continue to work against them to make them feel unworthy of respect. I think having this awareness can give a person the tools they need to not only survive, but thrive .
