Disney has been a form of escapism for so many of us, but there is no escaping what is happening in the world and in our country. I had a different post planned for today but with everything going on, it would be wrong of me to pretend that everything is okay. That I am okay.
Witnessing the continued discrimination and inhumane behavior towards people of color, especially black people, breaks my heart. It makes me incredibly fearful of our future. It is obvious we need to change, but change will not come unless everyone acknowledges the problem.
I’ve written down some things I’ve learned:
If you can’t think of the right things to say, just listen. You don’t need to speak out to support others. It is their turn to speak and their voices should be heard and amplified.
Take some time to educate yourself and pass that knowledge along to others.
Recognize your privilege and use it as a force for good.
We should all be affected by what’s going on in this world, even if it isn’t happening directly to us.
Don’t shy away from the uncomfortable conversations. They are necessary, especially right now.
Challenge your own biases because we all have them and they need to be confronted.
Take this opportunity to learn and be better.
Hold others accountable, but do it in a way where you teach them how to change their learned behavior.
Reach out to the ones you love. Check in with yourself too. Your mental health is still important. Now more than ever.
