People power wins! Our members were there to witness the swearing in of Denver City Councilmember Candi CdeBaca. We worked hard to beat $400,000+ in corporate money. Candi’s victory is a mandate for our movement: young, progressive candidates of color from the working class are not only electable, but backed by grassroots organizations in the field, they are unbeatable.
Already, Candi is speaking truth to power in her first vote against a $93 million dollar construction project to widen Peña Boulevard by three lanes, proposed by Denver International Airport. Candi was the lone NO vote--opting to put people & planet first--stating “‘We know our planet is on fire, we know what the risk is of induced demand. And so we know better,’ said CdeBaca, who led the fight against expanding I-70 through mostly low-income, minority neighborhoods in north Denver.” (source: Denverite “Denver City Council approves $93 million contract to widen Peña Boulevard by three lanes”) Now it’s our turn. As we can see from this city council approval, Candi cannot do this alone. We are building people power in Denver to create a Co-Governing model that puts neighbors in the driver’s seat for decisions about their community. All of us have a role in the fight for economic, climate, immigrant, and racial justice. ¡La lucha sigue! 📷 credit: Sarah Boyum @5280magazine
