Guten Morgen!

Art & Imagination ‘Circe offering the Cup to Ulysses’, 1891 by: John William Waterhouse, Oil on Canvas. Gallery Oldham.

Waterhouse painted #Circe the goddess of #magic dressed in a purple see through gown, positioned on a bronze throne decorated with lions that bare their teeth, and two enchanted wild boars that lay submissively at her feet. She holds a wooden wand and a cup filled with magic potion in her hands, while her arms are held high and outstretched in a pose that has been associated with the divine since ancient times. The toad that is depicted crawling in the foreground symbolizes transformation and has been traditionally associated with alchemy. The big circular mirror behind Circe stands for her derivation of the sun god Helios, and is a symbol of her magic. The mirror reflects Odysseus (Greek) or Ulysses (Roman) grabbing for his sword that is unsheathed, Waterhouse interpreted the story from his own point of view, which was more concerned with the irresistible and unavoidable power of Circe than with the masculine power of Odysseus as it was in the ancient version.

Another #book read and removed from the shelf.
I hadn't realized how little I'd known of the connections between all the characters before. (I knew many of them and their main stories... but had no idea how many were tied by blood to #Circe...)
*
And yes. Favorite page. "The truth is, men make terrible pigs."
*
And I still hate #Odysseus.

Today's post is brought to you by the letter T and a big number, like 250 or 300.

𝕋 𝕚𝕤 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕋𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕞𝕒𝕔𝕙𝕦𝕤.

QOTD: Can you think of a character that didn't enter a story until late in the book, but still played a big role?

Sometimes it takes until really late in a book to meet a character that is just as integral as the ones you've known from the beginning. Having just read Circe last month, Telemachus came instantly mind.
.
*spoiler*
.
Telemachus is the linchpin of the entire story, in my opinion. There is no ending, no resolution, to Circe's tale without him. But he doesn’t actually enter until three quarters of the way through the book. I’ll be honest. I’m not completely sure how I felt about that.

Circe (/ˈsɜːrsi/; Greek: Κίρκη Kírkēpronounced [kírkɛː]) is a goddess of magic or sometimes a nymph, enchantress or sorceress in Greek mythology. She is a daughter of the god Helios and either the Oceanid nymph Perse or the goddess Hecate. Circe was renowned for her vast knowledge of potions and herbs. Through the use of these and a magic wand or staff, she would transform her enemies, or those who offended her, into animals.

"Humbling women seems to me a chief pastime of poets. As if there can be no story unless we crawl and weep."
*
I just finished reading #circe by @madeline.e.miller and let me tell you, it was engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable. There were attempts made at humbling women, but they were are all foiled. Any attempt at discipling a woman for some misstep is instead transformed into an opportunity to live more fully. When people say it's not the destination but the journey that matters, this book is the perfect example. If you know anything about Greek mythology and The Odyssey you already know the majority of how this tale well play out. But, as with both of Madeline Miller's books, that is completely besides the point. This is a coming of age story of an immortal goddess and it is a voyage worth your time.
*
Miller has such a poetic writing style that it is like reading the classics themselves. In Circe, we go on the centuries long journey of the eponymous character growing into herself. And every word along the way is carefully chosen to be as poignant and beautiful to read as possible. Any woman who has ever double guessed her wants, her actions, her needs, based on what other people might think will understand Circe completely. And she'll take great pleasure when Circe finally (as she once says of her lover) truly becomes herself, and stands up for all that she is and all that she wants. It might take her many centuries to get there, but I suppose when you're immortal the judgement bore down on you is never ending and relentless. It is a miracle Circe ever becomes free. But if there was ever a God to do it, Miller shows us that only Circe - with her will and dedication - could have done it.

Art & Imagination ‘Circe offering the Cup to Ulysses’, 1891 by: John William Waterhouse, Oil on Canvas. Gallery Oldham.

Waterhouse painted Circe the goddess of magic dressed in a purple see through gown, positioned on a bronze throne decorated with lions that bare their teeth, and two enchanted wild boars that lay submissively at her feet.

I’m working on it. I swear. It’s good, I just mentally can’t read right now. How do you get out of a reading rut? I don’t know if it’s even a rut, I just have too many other things going on. I’ve fought with so many people this past week that I had one person ducking into another room when she saw me enter the building. It made me smile- on the inside. Bring it. 🤛🏼😠

This is a Giant Mandrake Seedling. Less than 2 months old. The name is Mandragora Turcomanica and they are endangered. Take the rarity of mandrake, and multiply it by 100 or something. That's how hard it is to find seeds of this variety, due to the limited plants alive in nature. I hope to help them flourish, flower, fruit and seed. 🥰 I was a good mandrake mama and I didn't claw the dirt off their rootlets to get a peek of the main root 😂 man I had to fight the urge. But I knew they would adjust super well if I replanted the root ball. So I think I earned an achievement of patience hahahaha. 🌟🌱🌟 #mandrakeroot #mandrake #mandragora #mandragoraturcomanica #rareplants #witch #druidry #druid #awen #witchcrafting #witchesofinstagram #witchesgarden #witchgarden #spellcraft #magick #magickplants #magicplants #greenwitch #hedgewitch #greywitch #hecate #circe #witchwalkdtsa

•A C C E S O R I O S•

☆NO MEZCLAR ORO Y PLATA

I’m posting for the 4th day in a row, don’t get too excited! I bought Circe a few months ago and I’ve still not got around to reading it although it is pretty high on my TBR pile. I read Classics at university and love this kind of book so I really need to crack on! Also loving the autumnal colours too! (The cake is a Trillionaire’s Slice from @boothscountry and is incredible👌🏻) QOTD: What is your favourite genre to read?

I’m hosting book club today and I made a grazing board of the Gods. We read #Circe this month by @madeline.e.miller and it was the awesome story of Circe, a witch and goddess. I had to add lots of fresh herbs, flowers, and fruit for all of Circe’s potions. I also piled the board high with honey, grapes, and expensive cheeses as I imagine the Greek Gods would do. What do you think, @madeline.e.miller ???

I’m no professional book reviewer, so I can’t tell you in depth what it is about this book that got to me. But overall I liked it quite a lot. It was unpredictable, just like the old gods that make appearances in Circe’s life. If you like Greek mythology this book is the one for you!

I read Stephen Fry’s Mythos before I read Circe and I think that’s the reason why I didn’t lose myself in all of the names that were flung around.

❝ They do not care if you are good. They barely care if you are wicked. The only thing that makes them listen is power. ❞
.
↠ Hi there ! Last summer, I finished Circe by Madeline Miller and this book literally captivated me ahah !
↠ I’ve always been a huge fan of Greek and Latin mythologies and this book allows the reader to rediscover their main and most famous stories, according to a brand-new point of view, feminine and strangely modern : Circe’s one, the witch from the Ulysse’s Odyssey.
↠ We follow her evolution, meetings, family, lovers, learning of sorcery. Through her, it is heroes, gods, titans, monsters, nymphs and and other major mythology characters which are depicted. They are portrayed with more truth than what can be read in mythological collections for children; it’s to learn more about their true nature and how they were really perceived at the time that seduced me so much.
↠ In this book, they aren’t glorified. They all have petty, selfish, violent, dark aspects in their personalities. Nonetheless, it doesn't take anything away from the magic of this universe and the fascination it creates.
.
𝗜𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗥𝗧: a bewitching book, full of magic and captivating myths with complex heroes, sometimes detestable, but with deeply and oddly human personalities. .

QOTD: What's a scent you wish could be made? 📚

______

These candles arrived last week and I'm so stinking excited for them! This is part of @roseandadder's new Arcane collection and I'm here for it. I loved the idea of taking these mythical beings and putting scents to them and as soon as I get a new lighter, I'm going to dive into these! ✨

I bought a Persephone and Circe candle for myself, and an extra Persephone as a present for a friend not on IG, so hooray I can post about them! One of the biggest things I was pleased about already is the packing. The box it shipped in was the right size for the amount of content and the packing was all paper confetti based, easily recycled or compostable. This is a change from a box I received earlier this year from the vendor and I'm so pleased about it! Using my shipping payment to properly size a package and being eco-friendly in materials are big things for me when I choose indie shops, so it made me even more excited for this purchase! ✨ .

I loved the idea of taking these mythical beings and putting scents to them and as soon as I get a new lighter, I'm going to dive into these! ✨ I bought a Persephone and Circe candle for myself, and an extra Persephone as a present for a friend not on IG, so hooray I can post about them! ✨ . . . . #candlelove #candles #roseandadder #arcanecollection #bookish #bookishshop #indiebusiness #independentbusiness #mythology #candlelife #ilovecandles #circe #persephone #mythologycandles #isupportindies #christmasshopping #candlepic #candlesandflowers #writingbycandlelight

Do you get books that go together at the same time or wait until you read the first one and then get the second book? .

Circe is infamous in Greek Mythology for her knowledge of herbs and potions but also for her association with Odysseus.
.
Circe is the daughter of the god Helios and the goddess Perse but even as a daughter of gods, life would never run smoothly. She was constantly ignored and used by her family, but in the end, her willingness to empathise with humans would be her downfall but also her strength.
.
I have been looking to read Circe for a long time, as I had seen many other people reading it and I was fascinated. However, since reading The Song of Achilles, I’ve been desperate to read Circe and when it was picked for my September TBR, I was ecstatic. It certainly didn’t disappoint! I loved Circe and even though she made wrong choices, it was easy to empathise and at times, sympathise with her! The characters were well written, the author made me feel as if I was living on the island with Circe and I could envision every scene so clearly in my mind.

🍂Coup de coeur 🍂
.
. "I thought once that gods are the opposite of death, but I see now they are more dead than anything, for they are unchanging, and can hold nothing in their hands."
🍂

Circe by Wright Barker, 1889.

The eternal lapis is produced by the rotation of the elements, in the unification of upper and lower, of fire and water. It is the celestial image of earthly gold, shown here as Apollo in the underworld, amongst the six Muses of metals.
