Wishing friends and family in Canada a #HappyThanksgiving
! Sad that I can’t be there. I do have lots to be grateful for this weekend🍁🍂🦃 ••LIFE UPDATE: Lately, life in Ecuador has been a heart-wrenching, life-changing experience for me. If you haven’t heard, 12 days ago, massive anti-government protests erupted across the country, accompanied by brutal police attacks and serious #humanrights
••Thousands of indigenous peoples from every corner of Ecuador mobilized to Quito, the capital city, to protest against a series of economic measures related to the IMF, subsidies cuts to gas, and reduction of salaries and vacation time. Such measures would invariably favour the elite upper class, hit hard the middle and poor class, and deepen already severe social inequalities. ••Protests led by indigenous groups (including women, children, and the elderly) were quickly joined by other groups including students and working class Ecuadorians.
••Protests quickly escalated to become a bloodbath -Quito turned into a #warzone
. Disturbing and heartbreaking images show police and the military beating and shooting at unarmed protesters, repeatedly teargasing humanitarian areas used to treat the wounded and shelter indigenous women and their babies, war tanks chasing and shooting at people, and sometimes even using grenades. ••Independent and international news outlets transmitting these events live were quickly taken off the air by the government while the national press either didn’t report any of this or justified the masacre by blaming protesters for the riots. So we turned to social media to document this terror.
••I’m grateful that, last night, after 12 days of terror, a peace agreement was reached. 🙏🏻🇪🇨 But my heart still bleeds with pain, for those who were killed, for the severely wounded, for those missing, and for those who’ve been detained.
••I’m so grateful for these heroes who fought for social justice
••I don’t recall any Ecuadorian government exercising so much brutality. All this with #LenínMoreno
, a president who claimed dialogue, and #MariaPaulaRomo
, Minister of State who used to be a feminist. They should be held accountable for the crimes.....🇪🇨💔🙏🏻
