Travel Diary Part 10 : Budapest
Budapest travel stories wouldn't be complete without a mention of the ruin bars! And a not so happening Friday night seemed to be the best time to post this 😁
Our Jewish district walk ended at the most iconic ruin bar in Budapest : Szimpla Kert. Ruin bars are unique to Budapest and Szimpla was the first and many others sprung up following its success. Ruin bars are actually the pre World War buildings that were lying damaged and dilapidated in the Jewish district. Someone had the bright idea of converting one of those into a bar. The place was furnished with a variety of old furniture - each different from the other. Actually that in fact adds to the character of the place. Szimpla is such a treat to the eyes ! We were amazed at the bizarreness of it. Couldn't have imagined a place like this without seeing it. You have to see the photos that'll give you a glimpse. Szimpla has movie screenings, music concerts, jam sessions, art exhibitions, farmers market and what not! We reached Szimpla in the afternoon when it was mostly closed. So we went back the next night. What we didn't realize was that everyone in Budapest seemed to have the same idea. So there was a long queue just to get into it and food and drinks meant an even longer wait. The place was packed with tourists. I read somewhere that Szimpla can accommodate 600 people, there are nights when they have 5000 (even the number seems bizarre!) I really loved the place and if you go to Budapest, please take my advice and reach there early in the evening!
Oh and Saree in a ruin bar - check 😊
