Wow, me actually reading the book I should be? Unheard of. ⚠️❗️There are spoilers ahead. ❗️⚠️ You have been warned.
It’s Christmas!!...in Love Letters to the Dead! I love Christmas, but this was really sad. I mean, of course it was: it’s their first Christmas without May. Laurel decides to put up some holiday lights to try to be festive, and the neighbor, Mark, helps her. Seeing him home from college reminds her of seeing him and his twin Carl at May’s funeral. There are some more May memories, and they’re beautiful, but sad. Laurel also talks about going to see the luminarias at the cemetery, and then buying one for May (she puts it under a tree because May was cremated). Again, this is sad and beautiful.
At night on Christmas, Laurel and Sky exchange Christmas presents: Sky made her a wooden heart and Laurel have Sky a book of poetry and a bookmark. They start to talk about deep things, and Laurel tells Sky she loves him. Sky starts to talk about why she shouldn’t love him, but Laurel says that just makes her love him even more. Laurel starts to talk about how May died, but then she can’t, and she kinda panics and cries. I feel like I shouldn’t voice my thoughts on this because of what happens a little later.
New Years is next, and this brings more memories of May. Laurel goes to a friend’s house for a small New Years party, where they discuss their intentions for the new year, which I think is a cool idea. They also get drunk, which is not a cool idea. At midnight, Natalie and Hannah finally kiss in front of the others (this, however, doesn’t change anything because they go back to pretending like they don’t have feelings for each other at school) and it’s cute.
The same night, Laurel (while she is very drunk) tells Sky that she is a fairy (like how May had told her when they were kids—I think part of Laurel held on to this after May passed because she didn’t want to believe May was truly gone and wanted her to fly back home). Laurel then wants to try to fly, saying she wants to fly, she wants to fly like May. I think that’s when Sky realizes something: he isn’t in love with her, he was in love with May, but since Laurel’s been (continued in comments)
