NECO DROP: ONLY A PUBLICITY STUNT?
After almost a week from the frenzy that caught the gaming community on #April1st
, we can now recollect what we've briefly enjoyed and try to understand WHY EVERYBODY LOVED #NECODROP
Apparently, the answer is pretty easy: it was #CUTE
and all about #KITTENS
mixed together (SWIPE×1~4) .
Surely I'd have never imagined to be able one day to play a DEVASTATINGLY EFFECTIVE Street Fighter-themed mash-up of #NekoAtsume
(the famous #catcollector's
game app where you gain felines' trust by offering them tasty meals and extravagant toys) and a random #CandyCrush
clone. What's more, this was just a lightweight, badly animated #browsergame
- functional choice, considering that #Capcom
conceived this demo as a #onedayonlycontent
, formally an "#AprilsFool
trick" and actually an interactive "trailer" for e-Capcom's upcoming #merchandisingline
of Neco Drop gadgets (SWIPE×5) .
Despite the disappointment of those who saw it vanishing without having time to unlock all the 360 kittens' quotes, Capcom is known, alas, as a company of its word when it comes to taking out after a short while "celebrative" games that still didn't express full potential - e.g. Street Fighter × All Capcom or Puzzle Fighter's reboot.
Neco Drop made no exception, wasting the awesome graphic work of #Tamio
Yet, IT WAS LOVED BEYOND EXPECTATIONS.
Of all possible explanations, the true reason is quite obvious, thinking about the huge success of a relaxing, visually essential title like Animal Crossing: WE NEED A RETURN TO #SIMPLICITY
- where "simple" doesn't mean "lame" .
Sprites are lovely AND simple. Simple gameplays are the ones we remember most and most fondly (as it happens with many classic arcade titles) . Without necessarily going back to Pong, we all recall the beauty of Pocket Fighter, the first Final Fantasy episodes or the beginning of Metal Gear saga, just to name a few.
Maybe is this what Neco Drop tried to remind us with its basic yet addictive fun?
I don't know about you, but that's what at least seemed to me, while I was screaming like a child after getting a cat-shaped Akuma...
