An individual with the #Chicago
Police Department tells VICE's Ben Makuch how cell jammers are utilized during training exercises between police and the Federal government.
A cell phone jammer is a device which deliberately transmits signals on the same #radio
frequencies as mobile phones, disrupting the communication and effectively disabling mobile phones within the range of the jammer, preventing them from receiving signals and from transmitting them.
A sting ray, also known as a cell site simulator, was initially developed for the military and intelligence community, the #StingRay
and similar Harris devices are in widespread use by local and state law enforcement agencies across #Canada
, the United States,and the #UK
When operating in active mode, the Stingray device mimics a #wireless
carrier cell tower in order to force all nearby mobile phones and other cellular data devices to connect to it. It is mainly used for tracking individuals, intercepting calls and extracting data from phones.
The increasing use of the devices has largely been kept secret from the court system and the public. In 2014, police in Florida revealed they had used such devices at least 200 additional times since 2010 without disclosing it to the courts or obtaining a warrant.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has called the devices “an unconstitutional, all-you-can-eat data buffet” that violates the 4th amendment. It is easy to see how quickly both of these devices could be weaponized by a tyrannical government on its citizens. #WilliamCooper #WakeUp #ExtinguishTheLight
