This iceberg isn’t going anywhere. The sea is finally freezing. The temperature snapped this weekend... -35 with windchill today. Brrrr! Hope everyone has a great week. 😊

The sea ice broke up yesterday and refroze today, made the sunset over Jenny island even better. Nice to see open water again

Another example of student artwork from poster about declining Arctic sea ice. David and I scanned all 100 student artworks and are in the process of creating a digital version of the poster.

In October, SDSU scientist David Lipson and I did an art-science collaboration with UIC Science outreach coordinator Kååre Erickson and a group of elementary school students and their teachers in Utqiagvik, Alaska. The students embellished a poster showing sea ice decline and projected future losses with art depicting things they love about their home and way of life, which are threatened by climate change.

A polar bear guard silhouetted at “twilight”. By the time we started field work, we had entered polar night enough that the sun didn’t rise or set, but hovered just under the horizon for a few hours each morning. The effect was a prolonged orange or pink dusk, which allowed us to work without headlamps for a few hours. 🌅

Researchers have combined a global climate model that projects where and when sea ice forms and a model of penguin populations to predict how penguin colonies would react to changing sea ice under future climate scenarios. The models found that under the business-as-usual scenario, where countries fail to halt climate change, emperor penguin numbers will decline by around 86 percent by 2100. Read about it on www.mongabay.com Photo by Michael Van Woert, NOAA NESDIS, ORA (Public domain). #penguins #animals #wildlife #biodiversity #climatechange #endangeredspecies #conservation #seaice #environment

Here‘s hoping this ice floe is big enough to set up a MOSAiC distributed network site!
The mission of the MOSAiC Expedition is for an Icebreaker, the Polarstern, to drift with sea ice for a year collecting climate data. The results will help scientists better understand water, ice, and atmosphere interactions in a warming climate. My ship, the Akademik Fedorov, circled the Polarstern to set up a network of monitoring buoys to contextualize data from the ship. Finding suitable ice floes — big enough and thick enough to set up several buoys — proved more difficult than expected because the ice was so thin! #climatechangeisreal

The decline in sea ice seen in the Arctic in recent decades has been linked to the spread of a deadly virus in marine mammals⚠️
🦠Researchers found that Phocine distemper virus (PDV) had spread from animals in the North Atlantic to populations in the North Pacific. 😵Infection caused a large number of deaths among harbour seals in the North Atlantic in 2002.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the ❄️💦ice has been retreating by around 12% per decade between 1979 and 2018.

Ice means access to food for the bears, and it’s here! Polar bears face a wide range of challenges, from pollution to declining habitat quality to loss of sea ice. Human influence these challenges. Learning vacations at the Studies Centre provide exposure to nature, and insight as to what we as a species can do, all while supporting further research! 📷 @pdshimel

It is an absolutely indescribable feeling to look straight down the barrel of a loaded polar bear.
Standing on the ice, face to face with the largest land-based predator on earth is an experience I will remember for as long as I live.
We spotted this big male when he was about a mile or so away across the ice and tried to position ourselves to be unobtrusive while we observed. But, with a nose capable of smelling prey 20 miles away and 3 feet under snow, he picked up on us pretty quickly and came over to see what all the fuss was about. An unforgettable few minutes of casual inspection by both parties and he was on his way, as silently as he approached.
Polar bears are astonishingly quiet and graceful animals considering their size, and I can’t help but think of them as phantoms of the arctic.
The incredible professionalism of the @churchillwildsafaris guides cannot be overstated, and I feel beyond blessed to be able to experience moments like this, knowing with absolute certainty that there is nobody more qualified in the world for these encounters than the people I’m with.

Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty | As a mother, I am keenly aware of what it takes to raise the next generation. Perhaps that’s why I feel such empathy for the struggles of mothers in the wild. A harp seal mother does everything by herself. She gives birth on the ice where her pup will spend the first weeks of his life, suckling at her side until he is ready, around two weeks later, to slip over the lip of the ice and into the Arctic water. These pups are born without blubber, but they quickly pack it on from their mother's milk, which contains between 25% and 40% fat—the higher the fat content, the closer the pups are to leaving their mother's side. Pups grow from roughly 24 pounds at birth to 80 pounds by the time their mothers leave them to fend for themselves. How many of you remember your first bear encounter or sighting? Please tell me! I think I was about 6 years old and I was out near Buttle Lake on Vancouver Island where my parents had gone camping with me. I told my dad I wanted to see a bear and so he drove us to the local forestry dump, and sure enough a little black bear was digging through the garbage. I was utterly fascinated, and have been ever since. It took me a few more decades to see my first polar bear in 2014. Today is the last day of Polar Bear Week. Let's celebrate these incredible animals!

In celebration of Polar Bear week, i am reposting my video of this young polar bear hunting and travelling with ease and agility among the loose bands of sea ice. She had just missed catching a bearded seal that was probably a little to big and wise. I wonder how this bear is doing now?

Our first sea ice sighting!!! After 5 days of transiting — from Tromsø through fjords to the Barents Sea, east across the Kara and Laptev Seas, and then due North towards the Central Arctic Ocean — we reached the ice edge at 81*N in the early morning hours of September 26. Some of us were still awake and shouts echoed through the hallway as we woke up sleeping friends, donned our polar gear, and ran outside to take a look! For many scientists and students, this was the first time seeing something they had spent years studying. ❄️

A couple of years ago I was filming these beauties on Svalbard. As usual, you do not approach a female with her small cubs in order to not stress her. But this female was quite curious and relaxed. She approached us and her cubs were playing right in front of us. When she decided to leave, all three bears took off in perfect sync like a polar bear marching band. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀#polarbearweek #babyanimals #saveourseaice #endangered @bbcearth @nikondeutschland @nikoneurope #climatechange #seaice #marinewildlife #protectnature #naturephotography #polarbearsofinstagram #arktis #klimaschutz #globalwarming #bears #babyanimal #saveouroceans

Polar Bears on Ramsgate Sands (Ursus maritimus - Sea bear) are not usually sociable & group together only when on land awaiting the arctic seas to freeze over. Their range lies within the Arctic Circle especially on sea ice where they feed primarily on seals and other marine mammals. Global warming is a catastrophic threat to these animals. Tipping’s tiny zoo is a collection of plastic animals, old, new, found, gifted or displaced. Gathered over the last decade or more they now form a substantial collection of beasts of all kinds. Air temp 12F, Water temp 29F. The grease ice is like swimming through a blue raspberry slush puppy. The slabs of plate ice beneath the surface slice your skin like hundreds of tiny paper cuts that you don’t feel til your skin thaws out. Time for a proper whisky.” - - -

FACT 10 ✳️: Polar bears are at the top of the Arctic food chain but rely on the entire food web to stay alive.
.
Eighty-six percent of the carbon that makes up the polar bear’s body is derived from the marine algae that grows within sea ice. Microorganisms like copepods eat the algae, fish each the copepods, seals eat the fish, and polar bears eat the seals. Just as soil and plants form the base of a forest or meadow food chain, sea ice and algae form the base of the sea ice food chain, supporting polar bears at the top.

Our ship time is UTC+8 (CET+7) as of today. We plan to set the clock 1 hour back every Saturday night from now on until we reach UTC+3. That will be Moscow time and the same time as our supply vessel Dranitsyn will be on. #Polarstern will be then constantly on UTC+3 time zone until the start of Leg 3 (another rotation with Dranitsyn). Ship times after the start of Leg 3 will depend on the local time zone of the drift.

It's still Polar Bear Week! and who doesn't love Polar Bears? These adaptable bears use this fast ice (ice still attached to the land) to hunt for seals. if you look to the left you can see a dark oval where there is a hole in the ice. this is one of many holes the seals use to get back onto the ice.

#MOSAiCexpedition science focus #5: Ecosystem!

The Arctic Ocean is one of the most extreme habitats on Earth, yet thousands of species of tiny plants and animals (such as plankton and algae) call the region home, living in the water and sea ice.
Biologists aboard the RV Polarstern will investigate questions like: How do these species survive in frigid water? Or months of total darkness? How will they respond to the return of the light after a long, dark winter?

My trip to the Arctic still feels like a dream 🥰

Fun fact: During months when sea ice/seals are abundant, polar bears can travel more than 3000 kilometers per month and can have home ranges that exceeds 600,000 square kilometers (larger than the Yukon!).
