The piping plover is federally threatened and endangered in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. On Long Island some of the protected areas by the beach are for pipping plover nests. These nests are set up by the male birds. The males have odd mating rituals such as throwing rocks, diving, and fighting each other. If you get too close to their nesting area they will try to fight you too.
