"Joker"and "Asuran" ,two movies that came out earlier this month despite the stark contrast in their titles have much in common, with both dealing with two very important issues namely Mental Illness and the inhumane caste system .
While the character of Arthur Fleck has been thoroughly analysed ,discussed and mostly sympathised with ,the talk around Asuran has been reduced to the lead actors performance and the fact that it made 100 crores . Why then has all the conversation been around one movie and the other completely neglected?? The simple answer to that question is the hypocrisy of us Indians.
We go around crusading for mental health, we condemn racism in the U.S and Europe but when it comes to practicing equality in our country we fail miserably .
Both the movies bring out the ugly side of society but with joker we shamelessly identify ourselves with the character without realising we are the crowd that stood and watched when mariyammal was made to walk around with footwear on her head ,or when chidambharam was almost beaten to death . Contrary to popular belief caste system is not a thing of the past ,it is a rampant issue which we often fail to acknowledge mostly because we still are a prejudiced bunch of assholes who preach equality but refuse to practice it . Asuran brought out the truth of our society, which is that regardless of who is at fault the ultimate price always has to be paid by the lower caste. We identify with the joker because we think society has failed us but what about all the trauma we continue to inflict on the many sivasamis and pachaiyamals in our everyday life all in the name of caste and religion??? If you follow the caste system and preach about mental illness, you are what one would call an ASSHOLE.
