Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty | As a mother, I am keenly aware of what it takes to raise the next generation. Perhaps that’s why I feel such empathy for the struggles of mothers in the wild. A harp seal mother does everything by herself. She gives birth on the ice where her pup will spend the first weeks of his life, suckling at her side until he is ready, around two weeks later, to slip over the lip of the ice and into the Arctic water. These pups are born without blubber, but they quickly pack it on from their mother's milk, which contains between 25% and 40% fat—the higher the fat content, the closer the pups are to leaving their mother's side. Pups grow from roughly 24 pounds at birth to 80 pounds by the time their mothers leave them to fend for themselves. Photo by @PaulNicklen // If you were a bird soaring through the sky or floating on the surface of the ocean, and you saw something glinting in the water, would you assume it was a fish or plastic? There's no way to know unless you get closer, and by then you've probably scooped it up with your beak. Seabirds like this giant petrel scour the ocean searching for food to feed themselves and their chicks, and sometimes that includes pieces of plastic waste. Plastic doesn't break down in the ocean or inside the guts of the animals that ingest it. Because of this, we are seeing wildlife as large as whales and as small as seabirds wash up on shore, starved to death on the plastic they have no way of filtering out of their natural diet. Did that catch your attention? Great. Approximately 40% of the lakes in america are too polluted for fishing, aquatic life or swimming. 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, about 70% of the industrial waste and multiple other pollutants are dumped into US water. And the sad part is it’s not only in the united states. At least 320 million people in China don’t have access to clean drinking water. If water pollution continues to increase, it can badly affect marine life and their habitats.
If nobody starts to help or starts to realize that we’re harming the world, human civilization will crumble by 2050. And it’s not just water pollution. It’s every factor that’s causing the earth to be destroyed. And that’s that.

As a mother of two young people (@jittermeier and @mickmitty plus my amazing stepson @johnmittermeier) I am keenly aware of what it takes to raise the next generation. These pups are born without blubber, but they quickly pack it on; harp seal milk ranges from 25-40% fat, containing more fat quantities the closer they are to the day her pup is weaned. Pups grow from roughly 24 lb at birth to 80lb by the time their mothers leave them to fend for themselves. This mother's day, I am teaming up with @LonelyWhale to encourage you to #HyrdateLike a mother seal. Ditch single-use plastic water bottles for good by grabbing a #reusable for the mother in your life. With @SeaLegacy, @LonelyWhale, @BlueSphereFoundation

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // Mother’s day is just around the corner. SeaLegacy is celebrating with a photo series that highlights the relationships of ocean mothers and their young. In this photo, a gentoo penguin feeds her young in their nest made of stones. Males and females share parenting duties from the start; they build a nest together, and then alternate the responsibilities of incubation and feeding until their chicks are old enough to leave the nest - about 30 days later. You can make a difference in the lives of penguins like these by choosing to #HyrdateLike a mother.
