[CONTINUED IN COMMENTS] “If you are not angry, you are not paying attention.” This is a quote I saw on Tumblr a while back, but it has never resonated with me more than it does now. However, I am not only angry, I am sad. It saddens me that a frequent response that I have been getting from people is: ‘I don’t care.’ I don’t care because it doesn’t affect me, I don’t care because I have another citizenship, I don’t care because I don’t know enough about politics to have an opinion, I don’t care because my parents work with China so I’m going to be safe...the list goes on. Well let me tell you something. These are all just excuses. We ALL need to care. POLITICS MATTERS and it affects EVERYONE. As a philosopher, here is how I would explain it. To make our premises into a reality, practical philosophy requires political action. From the polluted air that we breathe, the food that we eat, to the tainted water that we drink, EVERYTHING is determined by politics. Our entire livelihoods are political. Protesting in Hong Kong is protesting for clean water and clean air and the freedom of thought and speech. It is about so much more than just making amendments to some ambiguous law. This is about the kidnapping of Hong Kong residents, the denial of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the violations on human rights, the encroachment of our autonomy - everything! China does not respect basic tenets of rule of law. The people are angry for a REASON. If you don’t know, you can find out! Staying informed is SO important. Think about it this way, every time you watch or read a dystopian film or book such as the Hunger Games, do you ever start wondering - where are the rest of the world when all of this is happening? How can they not care enough to do something about it? Do they not see this? Guess what guys, WE ARE the rest of the world, and this doesn’t apply to just the Hong Kong situation, but everything that is currently happening! I am from Hong Kong so obviously I am more knowledgable about our own situation, and what I can do is talk about it.
