A Cultural Reset // I woke up feeling much more hopeful and inspired than I have in quite some time. So, finally felt motivated to post the last of my ‘Cranes’ + ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ throwbacks from Oct 2016. We started in New Orleans and, after packing two RVs of crew + clothes, drove for days through states, deserts and mountains to capture these images. @saintrecords sat me down weeks before and we mapped out concepts and creative that helped tell her story. I never posted these images - back then, I never really spoke about or shared my work. (Tbh it’s something I still struggle with today). Not because I wasn’t incredibly proud of the work and artistry we created, but because I didn’t want the conversation about clothing to distract from the vital message of the album. But the reality is that it changed things. It changed fashion and permeated culture. I read a quote from Solange that said, “I wanted to represent black sisterhood, strength, pride, and elevate the black man in all his beauty and glory.” How relevant and still so necessary today. Styled by me.

@saintrecords in @nadinegoepfert , Oct 2016 💞 Solange has this extraordinary skill of finding artists like Berlin based Nadine Goepfert, and I have always had the ability to track pieces down by any means necessary. She wanted to wear this 10lb ‘sweater’, made of memory foam to the MET ball. Nadine made it to be shown as a contextual art piece in a museum or gallery, never to be actually worn. So we thought it would be better suited in Solo’s ‘Cranes’ video. The real MVP is actually Tom over in the specials department at IBC. My lifelong collaborator who helped me get this from the side of the road, in the rain, back to its home.

I just had an epiphany I need to go to @tiffanyandco // Back at the rack in Tiffany blue. From Molly’s hero jewelry on @insecurehbo to Queen’s earrings for her first lewk on @queenandslim, I rarely go without a Tiffany credit on any big project. Plus, I’ve been lucky enough to stack a few of those blue boxes of my own. Adding a few big rings to the collection with #tiffanyT1 #ad

Voce Viva // As early as primary school I just knew I would move to the US and work in fashion; but so many people told me to get a new dream - it was never going to happen. I was outspoken, smart-mouthed Shiona. I got in trouble a lot and talked too much in class; was suspended one too many times and of course ‘just didn’t apply myself.’ But I made magazines during class, took sewing lessons after school and ‘styled' fashion shows at family dinners from clothes from my moms closet. I learned to leverage my rambunctious loquacity for opportunities, to open doors and move through the word—which took me to places my primary school self never could have even dreamed of. I spoke my internships, creative collaborations, and efforts to amplify the voices of people who look like me into existence. I stood in my truth. Thank you @valentino.beauty for standing with me and by women who believe in and speak up for themselves. “My Voice, My Strength” @sephora #ValentinoVoceViva #ad

To be black in Bermuda // @pyermoss season 3 in @bermuda by @micaiahcarter was published a year ago this week on @elleusa. “I didn’t feel black, I just felt like a person. I think that’s the luxury of being around Black people and being in and of your own. It’s a weird sensation to be free.” - @kerbito. Thank you to everyone who helped me create this in my country. One year later and it’s still one of my favorite projects to date.

La Mer-maid // In @bermuda there’s a tradition that you learn how to swim by getting thrown off of a boat. I grew up spending hours in the ocean - from sandy beaches to my neighborhood dock, rocky shorelines and open seas. Nothing's changed. When I step off the plane I can immediately smell the salt water. Which is why it feels so natural to partner with @lamer , a brand that embraces the sea just as much as I do. Being in Bermuda has brought me back to my roots and into the ocean. After two weeks in the sun, sand and salty sea, my skin needs all the protection it can get. Introducing The New Concentrate, my miracle in a bottle, with an advanced formula that strengthens your skin's natural barrier and is packed with antioxidants. Thank you La Mer for always helping me dive into this silky smooth skin and for giving me the opportunity to create some magic on this beautiful island I get to call home. #lovelamer #theconcentrate

The Best of @bermuda 🌴 For years now, I’ve dreamed of moving my home base back to Bermuda. So, I finally gave up my NYC apartment and made the necessary career tweeks thinking 2020 was finally going to be the year and BOOM, a pandemic. Bermuda closed her borders and I never felt further away from my goal. After six long months, I finally got the opportunity to come home and there’s truly no place in the world I’d rather be. While back on de rock, I got my hands on the latest @bermudianmagazine, where I was named among the ‘Best of Bermuda‘ for 2020. I think this is my fifth year receiving a Best of Bermuda award (slight flex). I am honored and grateful for the support of my island and my people. I love Bermuda deeply and am committed to contributing towards the success of this country as much as I can. Sharing my island with my friends and community; supporting emerging Bermudian creatives + young, Black businesses is one of my greatest joys. So, scroll thru to discover some of my Black-owned Bermudian Bests. If you are going to Bermuda, support them. If not, some ship internationally. Yes, the diaspora is global. If you’re buying black...don’t forget about our 21-mile island in the Atlantic. (Side note - more to come but insta only lets me tag 20) Cover photo by @micaiahcarter pre-covid for a @pyermoss #bermuda story for @elleusa. #rootingforeverybodyblack

Sittin pretty 💕 @lilireinhart in @rodarte for @nylonmag fall cover, styled by me.

I want to give a special shout out to my girl @tiffanyreid. I’m always so grateful to work with friends. As a freelancer it means so much when your tribe supports, loves and hires you. The real MVP tho was Lili for putting up with all that latex on one of the hottest days of the summer. You a real one.

“Black girls have been magic forever, but once we got this term, the world was able to see that magic in a way it wasn’t being received before” - @traceeellisross // True story, the first time I met TER she immediately took me to Rickys to teach me how to shop for curly hair products. So, it was such a full circle moment 7 years later to work with her on ELLE.com’s State of Black Beauty - the brainchild of @elleusa ‘s team of black girl magic @hallchloe @girlnamednee and @angellenice. Conceived as a framework for spotlighting and celebrating the complexity and splendour of Blackness, I’m so proud to be a part of this feature. It could not have been a more collaborative, supportive team and for that I am grateful. With a barebones crew, a FaceTime fitting, and styling over WiFi - we got it done. Black beauty is infinite and cannot be contained to a single issue or month. There is no limit to the stories to be told. We are just getting started. Styled by me

I’ve been lowkey striving for opportunities like this throughout my entire career. Not being on camera but working with a team that has given me a voice and constantly inspires, uplifts and encourages me. It’s not lost on me how incredibly privileged I am to work with a cast and crew of Black people who have given me the space, freedom and opportunity to co-create something magical with them. We don’t always agree (in fact all of them have ended up on my sh*t list at one point or another) but I’m forever grateful to @msmelina @issarae @the_a_prentice for taking a chance on this stylist who had never costumed designed before and giving me the chance to join the @insecurehbo family. Insecure Season 4 may be over but the lewks will live on. (p.s. The fact that this incredible cast & crew have been shut out of the Emmys for three seasons is criminal. Vote #InsecureHBO for #Emmys2020. They deserve their flowers)
