    I love the mountains, and my hedgehog 🦔❤️🌄 Pro climber for @thenorthface @blackdiamond @organicclimbing @gnarlynutrition 🙌🏼 NIGHT MOVES⬇️

Climbing... the perpetual passion project. There’s something new to learn in every attempt. I’m trying hard on ropes these days 🧗🏻‍♀️ finding that perfect balance of effort and rest. A drip-drop of energy compared to the all-out of bouldering. Y’know? 😌 Yeah. Time to get outside. Have a great weekend y’all ✌🏼✌🏼 @torypowers 📸 @molly.mitchell 🍭🍭 #climbing #sportclimbing @scarpana @thenorthface @organicclimbing @gnarlynutrition

Throwback nearly 12 years ago 🤯 to the Democratic National Convention when then-presidential candidate Barack Obama accepted his nomination with grace. Feelings of hope and change overwhelmed me that weekend. But truly, my inspiration started years earlier, watching my Dad serve in the Connecticut senate and stand up for what he believed in.
.
Real change is more than a moment of inspiration. It is years of labor and dedication to change you won’t immediately see. But with over 20 years in the Senate and his continuing work for the Connecticut Education Association, Dad is still proving the importance of being the change he wishes to see in this world.
.
Our world is changing whether we like it or not. We have the power to decide it’s direction. My decisions were, are, and will always be inspired by the values my Dad showed me. I’m so grateful to have his influence in my life ❤️ Happy Birthday Dad 🥰🥳 @senatorwilliams

Gerard Hauser, a professor emeritus of Communication @cuboulder, explains that “meanings develop through the interaction of symbols within contexts.” For the purpose of this caption, symbols are words. Contexts are social+historical experiences. We create meaning based on the words we most relate to, in the contexts we find ourselves in. That meaning, in turn, creates us. This cycle influences our perspectives. We get comfortable with our meanings until we evolve and interpret them in a different way. #growth “Through our management of language, we structure our perceptions of reality, preserving the past and creating new possibilities for the future.” (Hauser 1986).
.
Proposal: Language management of route names. Distinguish between immature/vulgar/crude names and racist/sexist/ableist/homophobic/transphobic/ethnocentric/anti-Semitic names. Keep the vulgar names and toss the names that are historically violent and exclusive against entire communities of people. How do we draw that line? Imperfectly. But it must be drawn.
.
Consider: When a Black person hears ‘Slavery Wall’ and is reminded of our country’s hateful history. When an LGBTQ+ person sends ‘Case of the Fags’ but for some reason isn’t psyched. When an Asian woman tries ‘Yellow Fever’ and is reminded of her fetishizing ex-boyfriend. These names take the ‘human’ out of ‘being’. People cannot just ‘be’ themselves when denial of their humanity is written, literally and figuratively, in stone.
.
Next Steps: (1) Acknowledge that the words we choose structure reality and that our experiences are not the same as others. (2) Voice opinions to those responsible for gatekeeping much of climbing’s history: guidebook authors. (3) Continue having conversations. Refer back to 1. Not every name will sit well. But, surely, we can examine those that discriminate against human beings.
.
We are all climbers. We get redpoint jitters, elvis leg. New beta and flow states. We are all trying our fucking hardest but some have to try a little harder…because the name of their crag mocks their personhood. Well, I can’t help you find new beta. But I can help define new meanings with a few simple words. #wordsmatter @james_lucas 📸

It’s a beautiful day 🤗 to VOTE! Colorado ballots are due this Tuesday, June 30th ‼️ and I’m supporting progressive candidates who will fight for the rights of their people and our planet. Those who will stand up for the CORE Act🏔, the ACA🏥, and the rights of all LGBTQ+🏳️‍🌈 and BIPOC constituents ✊🏼✊🏽 ✊🏾✊🏿 Our voice and our votes have the power to demand change!!
.
Thank you @jaredpolis for appointing a Special Prosecutor to investigate the death of Elijah McClain #justiceforElijah Now its time to think about senatorial candidates who’s actions reflect their words. @sencorygardner - what have you done to support Black Americans, aside from making Juneteenth a holiday? What is your plan going forward? I’m working on mine 📑📚 and keeping an eye out for yours 👀
.
On that note, THANK YOU 🙏🏻🙏🏻 to everyone to who gave input on my video. I’m excited to address topics of mentorship, representation, communication, #ShareTheMic, and accessibility to resources within the outdoor community. There’s plenty of material to address. Check back tomorrow for some thoughts on language, meaning, and, well... what’s in a name anyways? 😉 #climbingcomm

Will this make a difference, or not? Is it useful or useless? I don’t know. It felt strange to do and the result is imperfect. But it’s something. It’s a start. I recorded it last night and thought about doing it over, thought about not posting it at all but... I want to look back years from now and recognize this moment. It’s a movement, not a moment. But I believe the moments add up. Grateful 🙏🏻 for all productive, constructive comments. EDIT: If you’d like a transcript copy, please message me!! Big thanks to @alexandraissabella for writing it out 💛💛 I will put captions next time. @thenorthface @organicclimbing @scarpana @gnarlynutrition

“She says nothing. You want her to say something — both as witness and as a friend. She is not you; her silence says so.” -from Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine (my underlines).

After you’ve donated, after you’ve posted, after your google searches and readings and realizations - then what? What will you say, when your coworker says he doesn’t believe in color, as you sit together in the break room ? What will you do, when your friend makes a joke at a party and everyone else laughs? What will you think, when you catch yourself eyeing a black person with suspicion at your local bus stop?
.
This is about more than social media. This is about having a long, hard look at ourselves in the mirror and admitting implicit biases, taught to us and reinforced by racist systems that exist to keep white people in power. Check yourself ➡️ implicit.harvard.edu ⬅️ then think about the next time you might encounter racism. Not might - you will. Recognize it. What will you say? What will you DO?

For Americans, racism begins and ends with white people. Black bodies are in the midst of another outburst of rage, honoring #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor, #TonyMcDade, and hundreds of other black victims with justified acts of violence. This is a cycle we have become numb to. Short-term change happens with posting, hashtags, donations, memorials. These are external acts of solidarity. Long-term change, on the other hand, comes from within. What happens when we look inside ourselves and acknowledge the racist influences our society has ingrained in us from the beginning? It’s uncomfortable, right? But it’s necessary. Because racist thoughts, assumptions, and behaviors are in ALL of us. Taking ownership of our racism is the first step towards healing.
.
“I’m not racist, I believe all humans are equal. I’m not racist, I’ve joked with my Black/Asian/Native American/POC friends and they never get offended. I’m not racist, my family has Native American blood. I’m not racist, you’re racist. I’m not racist, but...”
.
Instead of commenting on social media, messaging me or anyone else about these subjects, or reposting photos/hashtags, I ask you to try something different. It might sound radical and it will definitely be uncomfortable. But, think about yourself...as a racist. Like Alcoholics Anonymous, except for racism. “Hi my name is — and I’m a racist.” Think about your conversations with friends and family, what you’ve laughed about, what you’ve let go because ‘it’s not that big of a deal’ or ‘we were just joking’. If you don’t get at least a little uncomfortable then you’re not thinking deep enough.
.
I recommend listening to “The Culture Inside” episode from @npr’s Invisibilia podcast. It talks about implicit racism that influences us without our conscious knowledge (thanks @tarakerzhner for the rec).
.
Comments are off. I really want you to get off social media and give the above suggestions a try. Thanks 💛

During Colorado’s Stay-At-Home order, I redirected my energy towards something a little different. “Pulling-and-stabilizing” are familiar concepts in climbing, but parallette bars introduced “pushing-and-stabilizing” that helped round out my antagonist muscles. These bars gave me a physical outlet while also keeping the existential dread at bay 😅 and they continue to be great supplementary training for climbing.
.
This video I made with @thenorthface shows the materials you need to build your own pair, as well as some exercises you can try yourself. Link in bio! ⬆️⬆️
.
Some FAQ’s to note:
❓Will these hold my weight? As long as you get Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 PVC, YES they will hold your weight!
.
❓What are the measurements? Check the link in my bio OR my story highlights for materials and measurements.
.
❓Are the PVC parallettes stable? Yes, if you glue and/or add sand to them. I did not glue mine at the time BUT I do encourage glue for extra safety.
.
❓How many reps/sets per exercise? Check the link in my bio for a full workout breakdown!
.
Many of you have already sent photos and videos of your parallettes workouts, I love it!! I haven’t responded to every one but thank you and keep em coming 😊😊 #thenorthface #homeworkproject #neverstopexploring #climbing #trainingforclimbing #parallettes #parallettebars

May is Mental Health Awareness Month; have you checked in with yourself? 💆🏻‍♀️ Sleep, exercise, and social connection are important factors for a stable headspace. But what about therapy, counseling, or coaching? Wouldn’t that mean you’re like... WAY down the rabbit hole? 🐰
.
The short answer is no ☺️ You’re a whole, healthy, and fully human bean 🌱 in seeking out professional help. But there’s continuing stigma around ASKING for help. “I know myself better than anyone. My thoughts, my mind, my life is my own. I should be able to figure things out on my own as well.” This... is a myth!! There are parts of ourselves we DON’T know simply because we aren’t usually looking at ourselves from an outside perspective. But you CAN learn more about yourself with the help of an objective third-party 💁🏻‍♀️ Therapists, counselors, and coaches essentially help people step outside themselves by introducing new perspectives. When we glimpse parts of ourselves we’ve never seen before, it opens up potential that can free us from feeling cornered or stuck ✨
.
^^This is a very simplified explanation but the point is that therapy/counseling/coaching is not a sign of weakness. It’s actually a sensible thing to do. We can’t ever fully see ourselves without the help of additional pairs of eyes 👀 So why not give it a try?
.
‼️If you have coverage through the Affordable Care Act, there’s a good chance your plan covers behavioral health services (which includes therapy, counseling, and a variety of mental health resources) ‼️ In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, take a minute to look up what your plan offers. Go one step further and schedule an appointment. And, when the time comes, please vote in favor of the ACA (looking at you @sencorygardner). I’m incredibly grateful for the mental health resources my ACA plan offers. Everyone deserves a chance to gain new self-insight. Give yourself a chance!
.
Slightly irrelevant climbing photo 📸 (@james_lucas) but definitely a great mental recharge. Climbing feels so good!!! ❤️❤️
