We’ve gotten a lot of messages about councilwoman Sawyer’s response about why she will not be changing her mind on the ban.
Although we hear the councilwoman’s concerns, our specific ordinance does not detail anything about leash laws because the City & County of Denver already has leash laws in place. The replacement of this ordinance will actually help in the enforcement of leash laws and allow for more funding and time to be allocated to this issue. Money will no longer be dumped towards an ineffective legislation, and Denver Animal Protection will not be receiving endless, inaccurate calls calling for the removal of pit bull type dogs.
We still have hope that councilwoman Sawyer will listen to reason. We plan to provide her with a list of dog trainers/dog-trainer facilities eager to provide pit bull training discounts, scholarships, and/or public education, as well as a list of low cost spay and neuter facilities. We will also be informing her of the number of volunteers we have accumulated thus far, and providing her with a breakdown of the volunteer departments. Many of our volunteers are interested in educating the public on current dog law, including leash laws.
We’ve still got a chance. Keep calling, emailing, and writing. Don’t give up hope just yet!
As always, please remember to be respectful, regardless of anyone’s viewpoint.
