The steady drumbeat of the rush to the cities has been resounding for some time now. There are so many news articles that bring the role of cities into question during this bizarre period. What do you think? Kolkata street scene 2010 #calcutta #kolkata #cities #rushtocities #pandemic @thephotosociety

Local activists making a difference in their own back yard was the subject of a @natgeo story on Earth Day I photographed in 1995. Mary Lyn Ray has been instrumental in saving green space in her home state of New Hampshire. #earthday @thephotosociety

Reading Peter Beard’s obituary in the New York Times today reminded me of the Lake Turkana - El Molo lodge where he lived and his life was so influenced in the 1960’s and where you could still feel his presence. His photos of Iman and wildlife were all over the walls and an aging caretaker was still living there as if nothing had changed. @neilshea13 and I would come back to this place every evening after working on a story about Lake Turkana for @natgeo in 2015. The El Molo in this photo are the original fishermen of Lake Turkana and there were only four full El Molo’s left in the world at that time. #peterbeard #ElMolo #LakeTurkana @thephotosociety

Genoa, Italy 2011 - Again, this was shot for the @natgeo 7 Billion issue. We’ve had so many good times with great friends in Italy… hoping they are safe. #Italy #COVID-19 #Genoa @thephotosociety

Hard to believe all travel is banned in India. On Tuesday, the Indian prime minister declared a national lockdown aimed at preventing the spread of the COVD-19 virus. Hoping our friends there are safe. @vinaydiddee #coronavirus #india #churchgatestation #railroads @thephotosociety @natgeofineart

Wuhan, today, is a big modern city with big city problems…11 million people living very close to one another…and now they are cut off from the world with the Coronavirus. Some urban problems, these growing pains… existed when I was working there in 1989. I was there working for the Pittsburgh Press because Wuhan bought a US Steel mill from Pittsburgh, but the leaders later realized there was not enough electric power in the entire province to run it. So they increased some of the infrastructure to accommodate the plant, but unfortunately, didn’t do it completely. The upshot was a dangerous work environment where Chinese steel workers wander thru smoke and haze with molten metal running through channels that they dug in the dirt, and it was exploding all around them. They wore heavy, protective clothing in this hot city to keep from being burned. Wuhan temperatures today are even warmer now than when these photos were taken. #wuhan #china @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection

This year, fire, lightning, and associated weather are nowhere near norms for Australia. There are some years where healing monsoonal rains do not come to the north as in this scene in Wyndham. But I went to Australia in 2004 based on years and years of weather patterns that no longer seem to exist. #australia #fires #monsoon

Photos by @randyolson | A recent story about the Australia fires on NBC News stated: "Intense and voracious fires are interacting with the atmosphere and creating their own weather, including lightning, which can cause new wildfires.” There are some years where healing monsoonal rains do not come, but they happen often enough that @natgeo sent me there to photograph them based on data from the previous years. In 2004, when this photo was taken, the normal climate pattern prevailed. #australia #fires #monsoon

This is a prescribed burn in Australia's Northern Territory, an area that incorporates indigenous lands. Fire was under control when I made this photograph in 2004 for @natgeo story. The Aboriginal communities had set this fire with the understanding that fire could also be preventative medicine.
