This year, fire, lightning, and associated weather are nowhere near norms for Australia. There are some years where healing monsoonal rains do not come to the north as in this scene in Wyndham. But I went to Australia in 2004 based on years and years of weather patterns that no longer seem to exist. #australia #fires #monsoon

Photos by @randyolson | A recent story about the Australia fires on NBC News stated: "Intense and voracious fires are interacting with the atmosphere and creating their own weather, including lightning, which can cause new wildfires.” There are some years where healing monsoonal rains do not come, but they happen often enough that @natgeo sent me there to photograph them based on data from the previous years. In 2004, when this photo was taken, the normal climate pattern prevailed. #australia #fires #monsoon

This is a prescribed burn in Australia's Northern Territory, an area that incorporates indigenous lands. Fire was under control when I made this photograph in 2004 for @natgeo story. The Aboriginal communities had set this fire with the understanding that fire could also be preventative medicine. Please check out the link at the top of @randyolson for @melissafarlow and our workshop in Siena, Italy October 28 thru November 1st. The photo above is the main plaza in Siena. We will be working on the basic visual building blocks of photography like geometry, layers, color palette, lens use, sense of place and the like… but also… empathy… The Missouri Photo Workshop is next week and we will be there as well and love that both these workshops concentrate on one simple thing: making intimate photographs of fellow humans. For me, a photograph is successful if the viewers feel empathy for those in the photograph. @sipacontest @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection

Borneo is turned into a moonscape by illegal gold miners as a river threatens to cave in on them. Please check out the link at the top of @randyolson for @melissafarlow and our workshop in Siena, Italy October 28 thru November 1st. We will be working on the basic visual building blocks of good photography like geometry, layers, color palette, lens use, sense of place and the like… but also… empathy… I’m not religious but if the line “by the grace of god go I” runs through your head when you look at one of my photographs then I’ve done my job. The reason we teach the Missouri Photo Workshop for free every year possible is because that workshop is about one simple thing: making intimate photographs of your fellow humans. For me, a photograph is successful if the viewers feel empathy for those in the photograph. #borneo #gold @sipacontest @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection

I’ve been following the Sudan protests. I did an @natgeo story on Sudan in 2003 in the middle of their civil war and am keenly interested even though the rest of the world seems more interested in Hong Kong. Even during the “peace agreement” phase there wasn’t peace and I’m afraid folks in Sudan are a long way from there. @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection #khartoum #sudanmassacre

Prepping files for @melissafarlow and my workshop in Siena, Italy where participant photographers hang out and photograph Siena locals. We gather with the town for a final show and great food. This is my favorite city in Italy. This photograph is one of the examples of how to incorporate geometry into your work. See link at top of my page. #workshops #italy #turkana #kakuma @thephotosociety @natgeoimagecollection @sipacontest

Seaweed farmers in Belize shot for @nature_org. The advantage of seaweed aquaculture is that it provides fishermen supplemental and alternative income. This reduces fishing pressure on wild stocks and the seaweed farms provide a nursery for ecologically and commercially important species. Underwater photography is not on the agenda, but we are teaching a number of workshops in the coming months. See the link above for our workshop page. @melissafarlow and I have been lucky enough to teach the Missouri Photo Workshop (MPW) for a very long time (not saying how long... it dates us) MPW is September 23-29. The Cape Breton workshop is October 19-21 @cbphotoworkshop. The Siena workshop associated with the Siena International Photo Awards is October 29-November 2nd @sipacontest. And the BLUOCEAN workshop in association with National Geographic Italy is November 5-9 #bluocean_workshop @thephotosociety @natgeocreative

Not Ocean day anymore, but that doesn’t mean children aren’t still trying to catch plastic laden fish on plastic laden beaches in Manila - Manila’s Pasig River dumps into Manila Bay, and is one of the three main river systems pushing plastic out into the world’s oceans. The Philippines puts 10 million metric tons of plastic waste into the ocean each year. #planetorplastic #plastic #oceans #waste #slums #manila #philippines @thephotosociety @natgeocreative
