September is National Suicide Prevention Month. On September 28 at 5:30 p.m. MST, our friends over at @tchn_co are hosting a free virtual screening of Mountainfilm 2020's LIV.

Despite their 8-year age gap, Tess and her little sister Liv share a special bond. From a young age it’s apparent that Liv is musically gifted, but she also shows early signs of mental illness. As the pair grow older, Liv slips further away into anxiety, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts as Tess desperately tries to save her. Told through archival footage of Liv’s childhood and adolescence, the film is Tess’ tender and heart-wrenching love letter to her sister and best friend.

The film will be followed by a virtual discussion with film subjects, members of the creative team, and a licensed therapist to promote and engage in fearless conversations around mental health.

Register to attend this event at tchnetwork.org/eventreg

Our 2020 Audience Choice Award winner @publictrustfilm directed by @byars_remorse is premiering on Sept 25 for free!

U.S. public lands are a uniquely American experiment that welcome everyone — hikers, campers, hunters, sightseers, anglers and ranchers — to its 640 million acres. But these national treasures and traditional homes of native people are under threat from the Trump administration. The powerful extractive industries, backed by regulation-slashing state legislators and federal agencies, see these lands as a gravy train whose stores of oil, gas, uranium and copper should be unlocked. Public Trust follows acclaimed outdoor journalist Hal Herring as he explores America at a threshold: Will we preserve our public land birthright or will we create a country where even a sunset has a dollar value?

Tune in on YouTube on Sept 25 at 8 p.m. EST. Link in bio

"Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." — Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933–2020)

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. And after years of ground-breaking equal rights decisions and scalding dissents, this tiny but mighty figure never stopped.

To celebrate the late Supreme Court Justice, you can watch Mountainfilm 2018's RBG on iTunes, GooglePlay, Amazon Video and YouTube. This definitive biography traces Ginsburg’s remarkable journey from diminutive law student in the male-dominated ‘60s to quiet but effective equal rights lawyer to her modern moniker of “The Notorious RBG.” Along the way, the audience learns how Ginsburg first fought for equal rights for herself, and then used law to disassemble an overt system of gender discrimination, gaining those same rights for millions more people.

Thank you for fighting until the very end, RBG. Rest well. 💔

Yasuni is a vast tract of Amazonian rainforest in Ecuador. It comprises both a national park and an ethnic reserve for the native Waorani people. It’s a place of unsurpassed natural beauty that’s been identified as the most biologically diverse place on Earth. It is, as well, home to Ecuador’s largest untapped oil reserves. A small tribe of indigenous people bent on preserving their homeland and traditional way of life is pitted against a national government allied with one of the world’s richest and most powerful industries. The rarest and most vulnerable species of plant and animal life are subject to predation by chainsaws, bulldozers and toxic spillage. It’s Avatar come to life. But, at this point, without redemption or a happy ending.

YASUNI MAN directed by Ryan Killackey is now streaming on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and Vimeo.

We are deeply saddened to share that Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee passed away peacefully Sunday night. Mr. Satan was a Harlem eccentric and the bluesman of 125th Street who left a lasting mark on just about every person he met. He is featured in Mountainfilm 2018's SATAN & ADAM along with Adam Gussow.

You can watch SATAN & ADAM — a fitting tribute — now on Netflix.

We are excited to announce the 2020 Commitment Grant and Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship finalists. This year’s group includes projects that deliver dynamic and important stories embodying Mountainfilm’s mission to inspire audiences to create a better world — something we need now more than ever.

“For both of the initiatives, we’re focusing on funding projects that bring diverse perspectives and stories to the table, added Program Manager Lucy Lerner. “And striving for an equitable balance.”

The juries will conduct final deliberations to select winners which will be announced in late September. The Emerging Filmmaker will receive a $2,000 cash award as well as yearlong mentorship support and travel to Telluride to attend the festival over Memorial Day weekend. For the Commitment Grants, a total of $30,000 will be awarded with grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Check out the finalists and their projects at the Latest Mountainfilm News link in our bio.

America has yet to heal from the trauma of its darkest era, and @winfredrembert is living proof of that. Rembert, who lived on a plantation, joined the civil rights movement as a teen and was put to work on a chain gang, is a rare survivor of a lynching attempt. Decades later, he still carries the scars. “That lynching is on my back, and it’s dragging me down, even today,” he says. As he etches the history, bloodsoaked and cruel, into leatherwork, fellow artist Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker organizes a different kind of ceremony to search for healing. “It’s not just black history,” she says. “This is American history.”

Hey filmmakers! Just a reminder that the application deadline for Commitment Grants and the Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship is Friday, July 31.

Mountainfilm is committed to supporting documentary filmmakers in telling stories that support our mission to use the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. Our Commitment Grant and Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship initiatives are two ways we do just that.

The Commitment Grant is focused on supporting documentary filmmakers in production or post-production stages. This year’s Commitment Grants will only be open to Mountainfilm alumni whose films have screened at the festival.

In an effort to give early-career filmmakers much-needed support, the Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship is focused on supporting documentary filmmakers in production or post-production on their first or second documentary.

Applications must be completed in full, including a video sample or trailer of your current project (no longer than 10 minutes). Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. Notifications will be sent in mid-September. Mountainfilm promotes and encourages diversity behind the camera.
