“This is US. He is a manifestation of the ugliness that is in us.”

While we wait and watch election results trickle in, while we soothe ourselves and our friends who are feeling alarmed by the closeness of this race, let us not make the mistake of blaming Trump for the state we find ourselves in. This is not about Trump. This is about US. THIS is America.

Please watch this all the way through. Let it burn as it goes down. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Thank you brilliant @victoriamahoney for sending me this clip, thank you @seekellymccreary for posting it. While I’ve seen this before, today it takes on new meaning.

The reckoning continues...

    BEEN #RidinWithBiden 🇺🇸 hbu?

I went to bed last night reflecting on the time I got to spend my birthday with @joebiden in Madison, Wisconsin during his book tour in 2017. The way he spoke hope and decency into that room filled with several hundreds who saw themselves in him and his story made me believe in his ability to rally people together again across racial, economic, age, and most importantly political divides.

I knew it then and what I know for sure this #ElectionDay is #JoeBiden is a necessary bridge in our great divide. We need him and @kamalaharris to WIN today. And I believe they will. (Yeah, I said it!)

But it’s not just Biden or Kamala I believe in. There isn’t any one leader, hero, or savior that can fix what was built broken. Our country needs re-building, it needs healing, and it is up to all of us to stop the bleeding. That healing starts with seeing the humanity in each other and voting with that humanity in mind.

Tbh the very best part of my trip to Madison—OK maybe tied with getting birthday cupcakes from Biden and his unbelievably kind team 😊—was getting to know two local ladies from the audience over spontaneous birthday drinks at the hotel bar. Two women I might not otherwise ever get the chance to know; women I might’ve falsely assumed to have nothing in common with—except for our mutual adoration of “Uncle Joe-y.”

But when we sat down together, we bonded over more than politics—we shared our whole life stories, our dreams and goals. They forced me to take a shot for my birthday despite excuses about my early morning flight, and all I’ll say is I’ve never laughed so hard for so many hours with complete strangers in my life.

I woke up today with a smile, thinking of them and feeling confident and optimistic—again, not in any one hero or savior—but in all of US.

No matter the outcome of this election, I’m grateful to be in this ongoing fight with all of YOU. This day doesn’t dictate our future. We do. And the work doesn’t end with this Presidential election. For so many of us, it’s only just begun.

But as far as that ballot goes, it’s #bidenharris2020 #votebluenomatterwho for me!!! 🗳

Raise your hand if you feel like voting in America in 2020 should be a whole lot more streamlined and efficient?🙋🏽‍♀️

Somehow even with all the noise we are all making about the importance of voting, there is still lots of misinformation and confusion around HOW voting actually works in our respective states.

Humbling share: No one at my polling site (not even me) knew that my state DOES in fact have same-day registration on #ElectionDay. It’s instances like these that end up disenfranchising thousands.

For those of you who haven’t voted yet or know folks who are planning to #vote tomorrow, here’s a voting info dump to help inform and protect yourself at the polls.

Feel free to spread the word because knowledge is power, fam! And the more we know, the more we need to share.

1 DAY LEFT #votebidenharris2020🇺🇸🗳

    And the category is...Makeshift #Halloween costumes 👻 How it’s going —> how it started (2019 vs 1989)

Since there were no trick-or-treaters on our new doorstep last night to tell this story to, here goes...lol

In 1989, my parents bought their first home—the home I grew up in—and we moved in on Halloween. They were so busy with the move that they forgot to pick up costumes for me and my brother. So, my mom dug deep into her closet and flexed her creative mom brain to come up with something she could send us trick-or-treating for the first time in our new neighborhood. I was an angel (I think?). Eric was a witch (bc boys can be witches too, and apparently moms was ahead of her time with her gender nonconforming costume game!) She spent exactly 0 dollars but we were stuntin’ in those streets—you couldn’t tell us nothin’!

31 years later, for Halloween 2020 I was a jet lagged af, childless woman wearing perma-PJs in a pandemic, eating pasta at a foldable table in an otherwise empty room. And there’s no one and nowhere else I’d rather be.

Except maybe this Diana Ross meets Thotiana hybrid that @aurorajames dreamed up so we could go to @selbydrummond’s infamous costume party last year lol (RIP!)

“Auntie E and Uncle J waiting on these trick-or-treaters like...”

...I could have just left it at that. That’s all I came here to write. Because I wasn’t ready to feel this. I wasn’t read to say goodbye. But when I looked at this picture again, my eyes filled with tears, my heart filled up with memories. And there was more to say...

I never knew the meaning of home until I walked up these stairs for the first time. We loved in this place. We grew in this place. We created and celebrated dreams that came true in this place.

And now we are leaving it, and what I will miss the most is this stoop. Our portal to the divine. You gave us the very best of times in the worst of times. You were the altar at our wedding. Our holy place. Our remedy for stir crazy. Our covid-safe couch for friends. Our favorite place to cry. To dance. To think. To write. To fellowship.

Life is calling us forward. And so we must go. But like all the great loves of my life, this place became a part of me. And so I take you and all the memories we made along with me into the next best chapter.

But first, let’s reminisce...

The first Black U.S. Attorney General (2009 - 2015) on how to spot and avoid voter suppression in real-time. Listen in!

Plus, a little vote at the end for the people —> who would win a basketball game between HOLDER vs. OBAMA? 🗳

Thank you @supermajority for bringing us together and for the work you do every day to mobilize women of color and young women in the final stretch of this election. #womenarevoting

When your mom’s GLAMOROUS AF “I voted” selfie on “the” Facebook has your phone blowing up...it’s worthy of IG grid documentation. Sorry in advance for putting you on blast, mommy—but it’s for a good cause! (Also, you ARE a “hottie”!)😆

Fam, consider this your daily reminder from my mom to you and yours: #VOTE 📲 🗳

    How are you—REALLY?

unplanned. unfiltered. real talk about triggers, trauma, creative friend breakups, authorship on the Internet, and more...all between two complete strangers who met in the DMs. because she wrote the realest thing on the Internet and it got more likes on my page than anything I’ve ever posted. which reminded me how important it is that we use this platform to normalize talking about hard feelings. bc those feelings are what actually connect us. and she has a new book out that helps us all do more of that.

here’s a little actual self-care for your Sunday ❤️(bc we all need it right now)

Got weekend plans? If you are in NYC or can safely get here, you must must must see “Black Vessel,” @theastergates’ first solo exhibition at the @gagosian. His work has been reverberating in my mind and heart for days now and yet I still can’t find the words to express what perhaps cannot be accurately put into words about how special this man and his work is.

I was not exposed to fine art until my twenties and I still tend to feel intimated in the presence of “art people.” The art world is exclusive by design and hasn’t always been a welcoming space for Black and brown folks to dream into. But spending hours getting to know Theaster, who so graciously walked me and my friends through his work and its connection to his roots in the west side of Chicago, had such a grounding, eye-opening effect on me. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so at home in an art space in my life. And that’s because I’ve never met anyone quick like him.

I know it’s trite to say but he is the real deal. Brilliant without pretense. Visionary without losing sight of where he comes from. “Black Vessel” is a vessel for our stories, our ancestry, our future, our faith, our music, our resistance, our resilience, our labor, and our intellectual property.

See it if you can. Swipe if you can’t. Follow him and support his work either way. Happy Saturday, fam!

P.S. Thanks for the intro @ava 🖤. My soul tribe just expanded by one.

When @poloralphlauren asked me to share what keeps me optimistic during these trying times, I immediately reflected on my faith. Before I understood how prayer worked or what to believe about an omnipresent creator, I believed in the power of the Big Blue Sky. Ever since I was a little girl the sky represented something far greater and bigger than me to look towards for direction, for clarity, for possibility, for hope, for some semblance of peace when I needed it. Whenever I felt low as a kid I’d look up and each time it was as if the clouds would whisper back: “It gets better than this.” Even now in these bleak times that have tested my beliefs and stretched my optimism to its outer limits, when I’m lost, I look up. The space up there reminds me of the space within. That infinite space to create more of what I want to see in this world. Even without any of the answers I’m seeking to the world’s biggest problems, tapping into that space keeps me believing it can and will and MUST get better than this. Whether you pray to God, Allah, the Universe, or The Big Blue Sky, these are the times to tap in to whatever it is that keeps you believing it gets better than this—and working to make it so.  #RLPartner #PoloRalphLauren #PoloRLStyle Tap to shop my look.

When someone I follow posted this on #WorldMentalHealthDay, I stopped scrolling. It made me think. More importantly, it made me feel—a lot of things. How many times a day do we make assumptions about people and their lives based on what we see from the outside? How often do we feel like we can be honest about what’s actually on our heart?

I once felt very close to a person who sort of disappeared from my life without explanation. And when I eventually addressed it (which felt very scary—vulnerability is hard!), they pretended not to notice the distance and said, “oh, I guess I should call more but I just feel like I already know what’s going on with you because I’m always watching your IG stories.” It was hurtful, confusing, and particularly bewildering because despite what it looked like online, I was actually going through one of the loneliest, most isolating times of my life.

It hurt when it happened to me but I’m almost positive I’ve been unintentionally guilty of the same thing at different points in my own relationships. (Also: I’m admittedly a very tardy texter-backer! I have 831 unread texts in my phone as I type...🙈)

So, during this period of forced physical isolation, to counteract the natural impulse to feel satiated by “seeing” someone online, at least once a week I make it a point to do a FaceTime check-in with people I love. To actually SEE their faces. To HEAR their voices. And to ask: how are you—like, REALLY?

I hope this is a reminder to stop scrolling and check in—in real life—with someone you care about. And to make the space to truly LISTEN. Because we never know what the people in our lives are struggling with. Especially during these times. And we certainly won’t know by watching their lives play out online.

Please remember: Knowing someone’s highlight reel is not the same as knowing someone.

Even as 💯real as I try to always keep it on here, the internet was never intended to replace intimacy. Cultivating human connection in the age of the Internet requires us to be intentional about how we show up for each other in REAL LIFE. The truth is we need each other. Let’s make it our priority to stay human, fam.❤️@thealiciacook❤️

WHY I VOTE? Our democracy is at stake in this election. That is not hyperbole. We need every single eligible voter to do more than just cast a vote—we each need to deliberately engage the non-voters in our networks to cast their votes, too. We have to get out of our own echo chambers and fight like hell against voter suppression. There is too much on the line for us to NOT put it all on the line. And the time is now.

As a descendent of enslaved people in this country, voting is a freedom my ancestors fought hard for me to exercise. But it’s important to remember that voting is also a privilege many people in our country still do not have access to. Too many immigrants and formerly incarcerated people who contribute to our communities and are affected every single day by the laws of this land are left out of the political process. I vote with their interests in mind, and I vote on behalf of the people who came before me who fought for me to have this right.

I truly believe voting is the absolute least I can do to effect the change I want to see in the world.

Please, please, please do your part in any and every way you know how. It really is on ALL of US this time, fam. Every effort you make matters.

———————————————

Thank you so much to @vmagazine for taking a stand and using your platform to weave together this beautiful tapestry of voices to help mobilize the vote across our industry and the micro communities we each inhabit. Humbled to be in this fight with all of you.

——————————————— Thank you so much to @vmagazine for taking a stand and using your platform to weave together this beautiful tapestry of voices to help mobilize the vote across our industry and the micro communities we each inhabit. Humbled to be in this fight with all of you. 5 month marriage update—in musical form: Bc I’m corny like that and bc @jonathansingletary’s new song captures all the feels 💘🎶🥰. It’s called #NeverLikeThis and I know I’m biased af y’all but this one might be my favorite of all time...

While we all patiently wait for the real music video (coming soon!), feel free to add it to all your playlists...I’ll just be over here unapologetically replaying it to footage of this day. 5.10.20

And P.S. no, that’s def not me singing on this duet lol. It’s my quarantine sisterwife @adeline (who also DJ’d our stoop wedding!)

Can’t wait for you guys to see the ACTUAL video for this song!!

Swipe for an important highlight reel from last night’s VP #debate...including my emotional state as poignantly captured by @iamcardib.

My key takeaways: The double standards on display were stunning. And yet, this woman—A BLACK woman—grounded us in a chaotic moment, reclaiming her time to remind America of the value of truth and integrity when only scraps of dignity seem to remain.

I couldn’t help but think of the little Black and brown girls whose dreams were validated just by seeing our VP hopeful #KamalaHarris on that debate stage.

I thought of the 30+ year old women like me who felt deeply ALL of those “Mr. VP, I am speaking” moments.

Thank you for demonstrating time and time again how to reclaim your time, @kamalaharris. I’m just so frustrated, annoyed, and sorry you had to.

Onwards!
